BENUE POLICE COMMAND LAUNCHES “OPERATION VELVET” TO ENFORCE ROAD SAFETY AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

The Benue State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that “OPERATION VELVET” has commenced in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM. The operation aims to improve road safety, reduce traffic incidents and congestion, and promote responsible road use across the State.

The exercise will enforce compliance with traffic laws for motorists, tricycle operators, motorcyclists, and other road users. Key areas include observance of traffic signs, one-way restrictions, speed limits, prevention of overloading, and possession of valid vehicle documents, including roadworthiness certificates.

The Command will also check the possession of valid driver’s licences, proper vehicle registration, covered and obscure number plates as well as ensure that correct plate number details match vehicle documents. The use of unauthorised tinted glass and other violations will also be addressed according to the law.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, psc(+), mnips, PhD, has directed officers to carry out duties professionally, ensure respect to human rights and proper engagement with the public. He also emphasized that enforcement must be accompanied by effective traffic management.

He further warned that extortion, harassment, or intimidation of road users will not be tolerated. Officers are to enforce the law firmly but professionally at all times.

The Command notes that the goal of OPERATION VELVET is proper road use compliance and safer roads. However, offenders of serious traffic or criminal violations will be prosecuted.

Motorists and other road users are urged to comply with traffic rules and ensure all documents are valid and up to date.

The Command reiterates that OPERATION VELVET is a safety and enforcement initiative, not a platform for harassment or extortion, and remains committed to safer roads across Benue State.

BENUE POLICE SMASH VEHICLE THEFT SYNDICATE, ARREST FIVE SUSPECTS, RECOVER TWO MOTORCYCLES AND TOYOTA COROLLA

The Benue State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in its efforts to dismantle organised property crime with the arrest of five suspects linked to a syndicate who specialised in the theft of motorcycles and motor vehicles across Benue and neighbouring States.

The breakthrough followed a petition received by the Commissioner of Police from a resident of Gboko, who reported that his red Bajaj motorcycle, valued at ₦1,340,000, was deceitfully collected from him under false pretence by a suspect who claimed he needed to borrow it and promised to return it the following day.

Following the complaint, detectives attached to the Command Monitoring Unit commenced an intelligence-led investigation, including advanced tracking, which led to the arrest of the principal suspect. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in the theft of other motorcycles and a Toyota Corolla, which were subsequently disposed of in Dan-Anacha, Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Further investigation led detectives to Taraba State, where the suspect's accomplice and three other suspects were arrested. Two red Bajaj motorcycles and one Toyota Corolla were recovered as exhibits.

The Command is intensifying efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate, establish the full extent of their criminal activities and possibly recover other stolen vehicles.

The Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, and ensuring that perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.

BENUE POLICE COMMAND RESCUES FIVE KIDNAP VICTIMS, INTENSIFIES OPERATION TO FREE OTHERS

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed a kidnapping incident involving a commercial passenger bus travelling from Enugu State to Abuja along the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area on the night of 13 August 2026.

Following the incident, operatives of the Command commenced a coordinated rescue operation early this morning. The operation, which involved an exchange of gunfire, has so far resulted in the successful rescue of five victims, including a four-year-old boy, while nine others remain in the custody of the suspected kidnappers.

One of the five rescued victims sustained a gunshot injury during the rescue operation and was immediately rushed to a medical facility in Otukpo, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Operatives of the Command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, are intensifying efforts to safely rescue the remaining nine victims. The operation is being conducted with utmost caution, with the lives and safety of the victims as the primary objective.

The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, psc(+), mnips, PhD, acknowledges the concerns of the families of the affected persons and the general public and assures them that concerted efforts are being made to secure the safe rescue of those still in captivity.

Members of the public, particularly residents within and around the affected communities, are urged to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly provide the Police with credible information that could assist the ongoing operation and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Command will continue to provide updates on the situation as developments unfold.

BENUE POLICE COMMAND RESCUES A STOLEN ONE DAY OLD BABY, ARRESTS 11 SUSPECTS IN GBOKO

The Benue State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby who was reportedly stolen immediately after delivery in a healthcare facility in Gboko and got eleven (11) suspects arrested in connection with the incident.

On 12 August 2026, at about 1100hrs, operatives of the Command attached to A Division, Gboko, received a complaint from one Aondofa Chia, whose wife delivered a baby shortly at a healthcare facility in Gboko that the newborn baby had gone missing.

Upon receipt of the report, Police operatives immediately commenced investigation, which led to the arrest of nine (9) suspects for questioning and to assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

Further investigation led to the arrest of two (2) additional suspects at about 10pm on the same date, including the principal suspect, Mrs. Nguhemen Asugh, aged 35 years who stole the infant baby. The stolen newborn baby was subsequently rescued from her custody and safely reunited with the mother.

With the latest arrests, a total of eleven (11) suspects are currently in Police custody in connection with the offence. Investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the case, determine the roles played by all the suspects and each person's degree of culpability.

BENUE POLICE ARRESTS FIVE PAKISTAN NATIONALS IN RURAL AREAS OF THE STATE, RECOVER 35 MOBILE PHONES IN SEPARATE OPERATIONS

The Benue State Police Command has arrested five Pakistani nationals and recovered thirty-five (35) mobile phones in separate intelligence-led operations conducted in Otukpo and Ugbokolo areas.

On 4th August 2026, operatives of the Command, acting on credible intelligence, arrested three Pakistanis at Adoka Motor Park, Otukpo Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as Younas Mohammad, 36; Ahmad Nunil, 38; and Aslam Muhammad, 46, were intercepted while attempting to board a vehicle to Adoka village.

During preliminary questioning, the suspects stated that they were in Otukpo for the purpose of marketing cosmetics and mobile gadgets none of which were found in their possession. This made their explanation, activities and movements within the area suspicious, requiring more clarification.

In a separate operation on 5th August 2026, two other Pakistanis, Juma Sharif, 30, and Muhammed Sharif, 25, were arrested at a local hotel in Ugbokolo following credible intelligence received by the Police.

The two suspects claimed to be dealers in Android phones. A search of their belongings led to the recovery of eleven (11) Tecno Camon 50 Pro mobile phones.

Further investigation and operational follow-up resulted in the recovery of an additional twenty-three (23) Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones and one (1) Infinix Hot 60 phone, bringing the total number of recovered mobile phones to thirty-five (35).

The five suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Makurdi, where discreet and comprehensive investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding their presence, activities and movements within the State. It is strongly suspected that the possession of those mobile phones is a decoy for their clandestine activities in the rural areas of the state. This is even more probable as they hardly speak or understand english.

The Benue State Police Command reassures members of the public that the operations form part of its proactive, intelligence-led policing strategy aimed at identifying potential security threats, preventing criminal activities and safeguarding lives and property across the State.

The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP CLETUS C. N. NWADIOGBU, psc(+), mnips, PhD, commends the officers involved in the operations and members of the public whose timely information contributed to the arrests. He further urges residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the Police.

BENUE STATE POLICE COMMAND ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW POLICE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER

The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, wishes to inform the general public, members of the media and other stakeholders that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has approved the appointment of DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command.

The newly appointed PPRO was commissioned as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on 19 December 2019 after successfully completing a five-year cadet training programme at the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting.

Following his commissioning, he served in various capacities, including One-Year Attachment at 'B' Division, Lafia; Divisional Crime Officer, 'C' Division, Lafia; Second-in-Command, Commissioner of Police Crack Squad, State Headquarters, Lafia; Patrol and Guard Officer, Kadarko Division; Divisional Crime Officer, Obi Division; Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State Command; and, until his appointment, Divisional Police Officer, 'C' Division, North Bank, Makurdi.

He has attended several professional courses, including the Combat Operations Course of the Mobile Police Force at ILA-ORAGUN, as well as media and public relations capacity-building programmes organised by development partners and other stakeholder organisations.

The Commissioner of Police Benue State Command CP Cletus C.N Nwadiobu psc (+), mnips, PhD congratulates the newly appointed Police Public Relations Officer and expresses confidence in his ability to effectively coordinate the Command's public communications, strengthen police-media relations, and enhance public confidence through timely, accurate and professional dissemination of information.
