Some scorpions can indeed hold their breath for up to 6 days, and some have even been known to survive underwater for at least 2 days.
Here are the details on how they are able to achieve this remarkable feat of survival:
1. Unique Respiratory Organs: Book Lungs
Unlike humans and other mammals that have diaphragm-driven lungs, or many insects that use a tracheal system, scorpions breathe through four pairs of specialized organs called book lungs.
Located on the underside of their abdomen, each book lung is an air-filled cavity containing a stack of thin, leaf-like lamellae (tissue layers). These layers resemble the pages of a book, which is where the name comes from.
How They Work: Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the air within the cavity and the scorpion's "blood" (called hemolymph) that circulates within the lamellae. They don't actively breathe in and out; instead, gas exchange is a passive process that relies on diffusion.
2. Slow Metabolism and Oxygen Storage
The key to their ability to survive with very little oxygen lies in two factors:
Extremely Low Metabolic Rate: Scorpions are able to significantly slow down their metabolism to a level where they use very little oxygen. This is a common adaptation in many desert-dwelling animals.
Minimal Oxygen Capture: A scorpion is not technically "holding its breath" by sealing a set of lungs. However, their physical structure allows them to minimize water loss and, conversely, some fresh air can become trapped within the book lung cavity. By entering a near-dormant state, they can survive for extended periods on the minimal oxygen already inside their body and any small amounts that might slowly diffuse.
An Evolutionary Adaptation for Survival
This capability is a critical survival adaptation. In many of their natural habitats, which include deserts and dry grasslands, scorpions can face:
Flash Floods: Arid environments are prone to sudden, powerful floods. Being able to survive for several days underwater allows scorpions to wait out a flood that could otherwise drown them.
Burial: Scorpions spend a lot of time underground, in burrows, or under rocks to escape the heat and predators. This low-oxygen environment demands a low-oxygen consumption rate.
So, while they are not aquatic animals and cannot swim, scorpions are champions of holding their breath, a testament to their resilience and specialized evolution.
