NDDC EMPOWERS WOMEN TO BUILD WEALTH THROUGH SKILLS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through its Department of Culture and Women Affairs, in partnership with the Derek and Davis Empowerment Foundation, has urged women in Abia State to harness their skills, talents, and local resources to create wealth and build sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking at an empowerment programme commemorating International Women's Day, the Director, Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs Imoni Ahunna, challenged women to move beyond discussions and take practical steps towards economic independence through dedication, continuous learning, and the dignity of labour.

Participants received practical training from experts from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA), and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) on business registration, product branding, regulatory compliance, and export procedures.

The training was designed to help women formalise their businesses, improve product quality and packaging, access new markets, and compete effectively in the global marketplace, thereby creating wealth for their families, communities, and the nation.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), through its Education, Health and Social Services (EHSS) Directorate, organised a Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) Workshop in Bayelsa and Delta States as part of its commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare across the Niger Delta.

The workshop trained 300 women across Bayelsa and Delta States, equipping traditional birth attendants with enhanced knowledge and practical skills to support safer pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. The initiative is part of a broader programme that will be implemented across all nine Niger Delta states, extending its impact throughout the region.

The workshop was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of traditional birth attendants, promote safer childbirth practices, strengthen collaboration with healthcare professionals, and contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality across the region.

It was a defining moment of vision and action at the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit 2026. The Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE, outlined the roadmap for redefining the region's identity.

Working in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Office of the Vice President, led by Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Ministry of Regional Development is ensuring that its policies align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The message was clear: the Niger Delta is ready to help feed the nation.

Seventy years after the discovery of oil at Oloibiri, the region is moving beyond an oil-dependent economy towards a future driven by agricultural abundance. With immense potential in palm oil, cashew, cassava, rice, cocoa, aquaculture, and rubber, the Niger Delta is embracing a new era of investment, productivity, and sustainable growth.

The story of the Niger Delta is being rewritten.

Mr Chiedu Ebie, Esq., Chairman of the Governing Board of the NDDC, at the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit 2026.

He highlighted the importance of economic diversification and the need to reposition the Niger Delta from being viewed primarily as an oil and gas hub to becoming an agricultural powerhouse.

He emphasised that the region has always possessed fertile land and a resilient people. What has been lacking is the institutional framework, market validation, and bankable project pipeline needed to unlock its full agricultural potential.

He noted that the summit, alongside the newly launched Fund, seeks to bridge that gap and create a pathway for sustainable agricultural transformation across the Niger Delta.

NDDC, Healing Arms Foundation Empower Women Entrepreneurs in Bayelsa State

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with Healing Arms Foundation, commemorated International Women’s Day celebration in Bayelsa State with a women empowerment programme focused on entrepreneurship, business growth, and economic inclusion.

Participants received practical training from experts on business registration, product branding, and regulatory compliance and exportation processes and procedures.

Resource persons from the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA), and the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) enlightened the women on how to formally register their businesses, access new market opportunities, obtain the necessary approvals and certifications to enhance the quality, competitiveness, and market value of their products, brand and export their products.

Speaking during the programme, the Director, Culture and Women Affairs, NDDC, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, urged the participants to make effective use of the knowledge gained from the training. She encouraged them to apply the skills acquired to strengthen their enterprise, improve on their product standard, and take advantage of available opportunities to expand their businesses.

Mrs. Imoni reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower women, foster entrepreneurship, and promote inclusive economic growth across the Niger Delta.

The programme reflects the NDDC’s sustained efforts to build the capacity of women entrepreneurs, enhance their contribution to regional development, and improve the socio-economic well-being of communities in the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has honoured 78 staff members with Long Service Awards in recognition of their unwavering dedication, commitment, and outstanding years of service to the Commission.

Representing the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD, at the ceremony were the Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Alabo (Hon.) Boma Iyaye, DSSRS; the Executive Director, Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde; and the Director, Administration and Human Resources, Mr Kelechi Nwelue.

The ceremony, held at the NDDC Headquarters in Port Harcourt, celebrated employees who have consistently demonstrated professionalism, loyalty, and excellence throughout their years of service. It also reinforced a culture of commitment, recognised the invaluable contributions of long-serving personnel, and inspired continued dedication to the Commission’s public service mandate.

Through this recognition, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to staff development and welfare while expressing deep appreciation to the award recipients for their enduring contributions to the growth of the NDDC and the sustainable development of the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Agricultural Development & Investment Summit 2026 marked a major turning point for regional economic growth. Speaking at the event, Sir Victor Antai, PhD, Executive Director, Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), emphasised that real transformation requires more than funding; it demands strong institutions, credible projects, effective partnerships, and collective commitment.

He highlighted key points & its outcomes for the summit:

Engaged Key Stakeholders: Brought together development partners, financial institutions, and private investors.

The Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. (Dr.) Jerry Uwangue, has expressed appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the opportunity to participate in the Niger Delta Agricultural Development and Investment Summit 2026.

He commended the NDDC for organising the summit in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing the initiative as a timely intervention aimed at unlocking the agricultural potential of the Niger Delta and attracting greater investment to the sector.

Hon. Uwangue described the summit as impactful, emphasising that its resolutions and recommendations must be translated into concrete actions across the nine Niger Delta states to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes.
