Abia State Ministry of Industry and SMEs Inspects Valleumbra Flour Mills and Ultimum Limited Aba, Reinforces Commitment to Quality Assurance and Consumer Protection

The Abia State Government through the Ministry of Industry and SME's As part of its commitment to promoting industrial development while safeguarding consumer interests, conducted inspection visits to Valleumbra Flour Mills Ltd. and Ultimum Limited in Aba.

The inspection, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Industry and SMEs Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara, was aimed at assessing the production processes, quality assurance systems, and operational standards of both companies following concerns raised by members of the public regarding the quality of some products.

Mazi Mike Akpara reiterated that the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti is committed to creating a conducive environment for industries to thrive while maintaining strict adherence to quality standards that protect public health and promote consumer confidence.

The Hon. Commissioner further urged manufacturers operating in the state to continue investing in quality assurance, comply with regulatory requirements, and maintain best manufacturing practices.

The Honourable Commissioner said the inspection is part of the Ministry's commitment to ensuring that food and beverage manufacturers adhere to quality and safety standards. He noted that the rising cases of cancer, kidney, and liver-related diseases, particularly among young people, make it imperative for the government to strengthen oversight and protect consumers.

During the inspections, delegates from the Ministry toured the production facilities of both companies and observed their manufacturing operations, quality control procedures, and safety measures.

The management of Valleumbra Flour Mills Ltd. and Ultimum Limited explained their production processes and highlighted the measures they have put in place to ensure that their products meet approved quality standards.

The inspection forms part of the Ministry's ongoing engagement with industries across Abia State to encourage responsible manufacturing, strengthen consumer confidence, and advance the state's industrialisation agenda.

ABIA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO MSME DEVELOPMENT AT REGIONAL BUSINESS SUMMIT

The Honourable Commissioner for Industry and SMEs, Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara, has reaffirmed the Abia State Government's commitment to creating a conducive environment for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive and compete both locally and internationally. He stated this during the Nigerian Regional Tour Business Summit organized by the Ministry of Industry and SMEs to commemorate the 2026 World MSME Day, in partnership with Stanbic IBTC Bank, held at Enitona Hotel, Aba.

Mazi Akpara described MSMEs as the backbone of every resilient economy, noting that the summit provided a platform to review the progress of MSMEs, strengthen partnerships and position Abia as a leading destination for enterprise development, innovation, manufacturing and investment. He highlighted the Abia State MSME Policy, the MSME Directory and the National Brand Development and Made-in-Nigeria Project (Abia Expo 2026), scheduled for 22nd–26th September 2026, as key initiatives aimed at transforming the sector, and called for greater stakeholder collaboration.

Speaking, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Dr. Salome Obiukwu, represented by the Director of Commerce, Mr. Chidobe Ogbonna, said the present administration has consistently prioritized enterprise development through reforms that improve the ease of doing business, rebuild infrastructure and restore investor confidence.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Dr. Okey Ihemanma, reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to implementing policies and programmes that will strengthen the MSME sector and create sustainable opportunities for entrepreneurs across Abia State.

In her remarks, the Head of Enterprise Banking, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Mrs. Jumoke Bello, commended the State Government's commitment to enterprise development and reaffirmed the Bank's support for MSMEs.

In separate goodwill messages, the Head of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Abia State, Mr. Anusa Oko; the President of the Umuahia Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (UCCIMA), Dr. Catharine Igbokwe, represented by Chief Enwerem Eze; and the State Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), Mr. Linus Eze, urged MSME operators to formalize their businesses to enable them access government support, grants and financing opportunities.

The summit featured panel discussions, recognition of outstanding MSMEs, business networking and interactive sessions with stakeholders across the MSME ecosystem.

Abia Strengthens Made-in-Nigeria Drive as National Brand Development Team Visits State

The Abia State Government has welcomed a delegation from Abuja under the National Brand Development and Made-in-Nigeria Project as part of efforts to promote indigenous products, strengthen local industries, and enhance Nigeria's economic competitiveness.

The delegation, led by the Executive Director of the Project, Hon. Nwabueze George, and the Chairman of the Technical Committee, Alhaji Oladijoye Musiliu, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, at Government House, Umuahia.

Speaking during the meeting, His Excellency commended the initiative and reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Alex Otti's administration to policies that promote local production, entrepreneurship, and industrial development. He noted that Abia remains committed to building a productive economy driven by innovation, enterprise, and local manufacturing.

Abia State Government Deepens Strategic Plans for Abia Expo 2026 to Drive MSME Growth and Industrialization

The Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), has intensified preparations for the successful hosting of the Abia Expo 2026, coming up from 22nd–26th September, following a stakeholders’ committee meeting held at the Ministry’s Board Room.

Speaking during the meeting, the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara, said the Expo is being organized in partnership with the National Brand Made-in-Nigeria Project Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government, and is aligned with the State Government’s industrialization and economic diversification agenda. The initiative is targeted at promoting locally manufactured products, particularly from Aba, and positioning them competitively in national and international markets.

He further emphasized the need to attract investors, sponsors, and development partners, as well as create awareness for the Expo, noting that it will serve as a convergence point for financiers, buyers, policymakers, and international trade actors.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Dr. Okey Ihemanma, reiterated that the Expo is a strategic platform to expose local products, expand market access, and reposition Abia as a leading manufacturing hub, while attracting participation from other states and international stakeholders.

Key resolutions from the meeting included the establishment of a robust accreditation and access control system, supported by smart identification, to ensure seamless coordination of participants and visitors.

The committee also stressed that only products that meet quality control standards will be showcased, to enhance credibility and global competitiveness. Efforts will be made to keep participation costs affordable for MSMEs through sponsorship support.

The meeting also addressed logistics and infrastructure, including provision of mobile facilities and effective venue management to ensure a smooth event. Collaboration with regulatory and development agencies was also emphasized.

The Abia State6 Government remains committed to supporting MSMEs and leveraging Abia Expo 2026 for economic growth, job creation, and industrial transformation.

Abia State Government ThROUGH THE MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY AND SME'S Partners WITH Bank of Industry to Deepen SME Access to ₦10 Billion Matching Fund.

The Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI), has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering local businesses with the successful hosting of a Technical Workshop aimed enhancing access to the ₦10 Billion Matching Fund Scheme,held on Wednesday 10th May at Panyu Hotels and Resorts Aba.

The workshop, held in Aba, brought together key stakeholders, including officials of the Bank of Industry, representatives of the Ministry, and members of the business community. The session was designed to sensitize SMEs on the application process, requirements, and to identify challenges hindering access to the loan facility.

The Honourable Commissioner for Industry and SMEs Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara Speaking at the event emphasized that the initiative is part of the Abia State Government’s broader strategy to stimulate economic growth, support entrepreneurship, and create sustainable employment opportunities. He reiterated that the Ministry remains committed to ensuring that genuine business owners successfully access the fund.

Speaking at the event, The Director General of Bank of Industry Mrs Uche Onwuka highlighted that while a significant number of applications have been received, only a fraction have met the necessary requirements for approval. Key challenges identified include issues related to documentation, provision of guarantors, and compliance with certification standards. Participants were encouraged to take advantage of the guidance provided to improve their eligibility.

A major highlight of the workshop was the presentation of cheques to applicants who successfully met all requirements, marking a significant milestone in the disbursement process. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the State Government and the Bank of Industry for the opportunity to scale their businesses.

The workshop also served as an interactive platform for business owners to provide feedback on their experiences, enabling both the Ministry and BOI to further streamline the process and address existing bottlenecks.

Speaking during the visit, Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara commended the management of Jilnas Limited for their commitment to industrial development and for creating employment opportunities within the state. He reiterated the Abia State Government’s dedication to supporting industries and fostering a business-friendly environment that will attract investments and stimulate economic growth.

Abia State Government Takes Over Afro Beverages Facility From Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

The Abia State Government through the Ministry of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises has officially taken over the Afro Beverages facility as part of the State Government’s ongoing drive to repurpose dormant industrial assets for economic and infrastructural development.

The handover of the facility was conducted on-site by AMCON, marking a significant step toward its integration into the State’s transport infrastructure, where it will also serve as a charging spot for electric buses supporting the State’s emerging electric bus transportation system.

Speaking during the event, the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Industry and SMEs, Mazi Michael Enyinnaya Akpara, ably represented by Special Advisor to the Governor on Industry and SME's Lady Chinwe Kanu Ubah, thanked the Governor for making the initiative a reality and stated that the facility will serve as a central charging station for electric buses operating within Abia and along inter-city routes, including the Umuahia–Aba corridor. The initiative is designed to strengthen the public transportation network, improve mobility, and advance the State’s transition toward clean and sustainable energy solutions.

Lady Chinwe Kanu Ubah emphasized that the project underscores the Government’s commitment to industrial revitalization, sustainable transportation, and the productive deployment of existing assets to drive long-term socio-economic development.

Speaking at the event, Arc. Kelechi Obasi, Director of Public Building and Maintenance, Ministry of Lands, said the adaptive reuse of the structure reflects a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure management. He noted that incorporating electric mobility infrastructure into the facility aligns with global best practices in urban renewal and sustainable development, adding that technical evaluations confirm the site’s readiness for its new role.

In his remarks, Chief Robert Ohuoba, Receiver-Manager, AMCON, described the transfer as part of AMCON’s statutory responsibility to recover and reposition assets in ways that deliver tangible economic value. He expressed confidence that the State Government’s planned utilization would stimulate growth while serving the public interest.

Also speaking, Mr. Alex Ezeukwu, Quality Controller, Afro Beverages, commended the orderly transition process and acknowledged the legacy of the facility. He stated that its new purpose ensures continuity of service to society while opening a new chapter focused on innovation and environmental responsibility.
