ASTAL HOSTS ST. BENEDICT SCHOOL STUDENTS ON EDUCATIONAL EXCURSION TO PROMOTE SPACE SCIENCE AWARENESS

The Advanced Space Technology Applications Laboratory (ASTAL), Uyo, welcomed staff and graduating Senior Secondary School (SS3) students of St. Benedict School, Uyo, on an educational excursion designed to deepen their understanding of space science, satellite technology, and Nigeria's space programme.
The programme, coordinated by Mr. Celestine Mhambe, commenced with the introduction of the visiting delegation led by Mr. Uwemedimo Patrick, accompanied by Mr. Imoh Ekanem and the students.
Welcoming the delegation, the Acting Head of ASTAL, Dr. Esther Hanson, commended the students for their discipline and exemplary conduct and appreciated the Management of St. Benedict School for prioritizing science education through the excursion. She emphasized that early exposure to space science broadens students' perspectives and helps them appreciate the vital role of space technology in national development.
Dr. Hanson highlighted the everyday applications of satellite technology in communication, navigation, weather forecasting, agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management, and other sectors that impact daily life. She encouraged the students to participate actively and explore the exciting opportunities available in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). On behalf of the Director General/Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, she warmly welcomed the students to ASTAL.
The technical presentation, "Space Exploration and Nigeria's Space Programme," was delivered by Mr. Precious Henry Diepriye, who introduced the students to the fundamentals of space exploration, the Solar System, Earth's atmosphere, satellite technology, and the evolution of Nigeria's Space Programme. He also highlighted the critical role of satellites in communication, agriculture, environmental management, disaster response, urban planning, national security, and sustainable development.
The interactive session inspired the students to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and provided valuable insight into the limitless opportunities within Nigeria's growing space sector.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Mr. Uwemedimo Patrick, on behalf of His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. John Ebebe Ayah, Proprietor of St. Benedict School, and the School Principal, expressed sincere appreciation to ASTAL Management and Staff for the warm reception, enlightening presentations, and practical learning experience. He noted that the excursion had broadened the students' understanding of space science and inspired them to pursue careers in science and technology.
