AKS GOVT TO TRAIN 5,000 SOFTWARE ENGINEERS.

Akwa Ibom State Government has spoken of its preparedness to train a minimum of 5,000 Software Engineers in the next 5 years.

The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien disclosed this while addressing participants at the on-going Web-Development and design training by hotel.ng in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government at the Ibom E-Library.

Dr. Nse Essien stated that as a Ministry,” we are determined to produce as many Web Developers as possible to help stimulate the economy of the state and also create jobs”.

The Commissioner who stressed that the 21st Century World is driven by Science, Technology and innovation maintained that Akwa Ibom State would not be left behind. His words: “we are in a digital era with landmark revolution characterized by the use of technology which increases speed and breadth of knowledge, turnover within the economy and society”.

Dr. Nse Essien stated that acquiring digital skills and gaining new qualification is the key to success and challenged job seekers to go digital by acquiring pre-requisite skills which according to him is the panacea for unemployment.

He expressed happiness that the training was going on as planned in terms of quality and participation and congratulated the 100 trainees who made it through the rigorous selection process.

The CEO of hotels.ng, Mr. Mark Essien said the programme started with over 2,000 participants, but have been scaled down to 100 saying that the process of selection was fair and pure, assuring that the 100 trainees who made it to the last lap of the exercise are young men and women he can vouch assuming that the best 50 trainees would be given automatic employment in the private sector.

Mr. Essien expressed gratitude to the State Government under the leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel for the support extended to the programme in terms of power, accommodation, internet connectivity which has contributed to the success of the exercise.

The CEO said the three months internship programme would be rounded off next month ending and expressed the optimism that the knowledge gained by the new software engineers would impact positively on the state.

Mr. Keresifon Ekpo, Miss Mercy Ikpe and Mr. Hanson Johnson said they were glad to make it to the last lap of the training exercise adding that they are today confirmed software designers.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Deaconess Affiong Okpo and Directors in the Ministry were in attendance.

Today, the Honourable Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien and the CEO of Hotels.ng, Mr. Mark Essien briefed the Press on the 3-months internship program for Software Developers and Visual Designers.

Hotels.ng, Nigeria’s Biggest Hotel Booking Company partners with the AkwaIbom State Government on a Remote Internship Program for Akwa Ibom Residents on the 1st of September, 2017.

Hotels.ng, a startup and Nigeria’s biggest hotel booking service signed an MOU with the Akwa
Ibom State government in a deal aimed at promoting local tech talent in the state.

Hotels.ng, a tech startup that organises bi-annual remote internship programmes for participantsfrom across Nigeria will, starting from September 1, 2017, organise a special internship program for residents of Akwa Ibom. The internship program is designed for beginner softwaredevelopers and UI/UX designers who have a serious desire to improve on their skills.

The interns will be given an opportunity to collaborate, innovate, solve real problems and receive stipends as they progress in the program.

According to Dr. Nse Udo Essien, the Honourable Commissioner for Science and Technologyand State’s representative in the agreement, about 150 - 500 young men and women will be trained in this internship program that is designed to last for 3 months.

He promised that the State’s Ibom e-library would be open to all the interns during the internship period.

Mark Essien, the company’s CEO described the internship program as “a great opportunity for
participants to plug into the rising global trend of the remote working culture while learning
valuable skills”. He announced that the program would commence on September 1, 2017 and

AKWA IBOM, HOTEL BOOKING LIMITED SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON WEB DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

Akwa Ibom State Government has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hotel Booking Limited to train youths of the state on Web development and design.

At the new Secretariat Annex, office of the Chairman, Foreign Direct Investment, Mr. Gabriel Ukpe, venue of the Ceremony, Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien in company with other State Government Officials signed on behalf of the State Government while Hotel Booking Limited was led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Company, Mr. Mark Essien.

Speaking, Dr. Nse Essien said the gesture was in line with the five point agenda of the present administration geared towards engaging our youths positively, creating jobs and alleviating poverty in the state.

According to the Commissioner, between 150 – 500 youths would be trained on web design and development using the Ibom e-library and remote locations. He said a platform would be created for intended participants.

“The essence of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is to raise a crop of talented web - Developers in Akwa Ibom State. We are training 500 interested young men and women and the training can be accessed from remote locations considering the fact that it would be done on-line”.

The Science and Technology boss assured that best 50 participants would be given immediate employment at the completion of the training programme which is expected to last for three months. He called on would be participants to take the training serious.

The Chairman, Foreign Direct Investment, Mr. Gabriel Ukpe said he was happy with Hotel Booking Limited for identifying with the passion of Governor Udom Emmanuel led administration, aimed at creating employment expressing the optimism that with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Akwa Ibom State would be opened up for further collaborations with the Company.

The Chief Executive officer of Hotel Booking Limited, Mr. Mark Essien said the training is aimed at empowering the youths of the state to make them employable, self-reliant and employers of labour.

The CEO disclosed that each participant would be entitled to stipends upon completion of the tasks assigned to them by the resource persons. He thanked the State Government for accepting to partner with his company for the empowerment of youths of Akwa Ibom State.

SKILL ACQUISITION: A PANACEA FOR JOB CREATION- COMMISSIONER SCIENCE & TECH.

Skill acquisition has been identified as a panacea for job creation, for the teaming unemployment youths in Akwa Ibom State.


The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien who stated this during an inspection tour of the Technology Incubation center along Aka Nung Udoe Road Uyo, said technology is a powerful tool in the industrialization of any State or Nation.

The Commissioner was accompanied on the trip by some management staff of his Ministry stated that the establishment of the Technology Incubation Center by the Federal Government of Nigeria was crucial to the development of Technology in the State saying “skill acquisition is the only way we can create job for the teaming unemployed youths”.

Dr. Nse Essien maintained that the policy guideline establishing the center was in line with the 5 point agenda of the Present administration which include, wealth creation, noting that the center has helped in driving down the employment figure in the State.

The Commissioner also assured the center of the support of the Ministry as a liaison between Federal and State Government to nurture first class entrepreneurs in the State. He said lack of publicity was responsible for the non-awareness of the activities of the center and promised to help publicize its activities as well as channel their problems to the appropriate quarters.

Earlier, the Center Manager of the Technology Incubation Center Uyo, Mr. Macauley Ekong Umoh said Uyo is one of the 29 centers already established across the Country under the National Board for Technology Incubation as parastatals of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

Mr. Umoh stated that the center is vested with the responsibility of boosting the industrial base of the Country through commercialization of Research and Development results, upgrading and enhancing the application of indigenous technologies.

The Manager said the center has graduated four batches of indigenous entrepreneurs in Akwa Ibom State who have successfully completed the three years of Technology Incubation programme. He noted that both graduates and entrepreneurs have employed over 158 indigenes of the State while three products of the center have been patented.

To enable the center fully actualize the purpose for which it was established, the center manger appealed for the rehabilitation of the dilapidated office/ incubation Complex and provision of project vehicle to facilitate monitoring and evaluation of non-resident entrepreneurs and pre/post incubutees.

CELEBRATING THE MAN, DR. NSE UDO ESSIEN

Today is the birthday of Dr. Nse Udo Essien, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Science and Technology.

He is a native of Nyaraenyin Ntong-Uno in Amayam Clan, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

Essien attended the famous Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar in Cross River State for his West African School Certificate, before he proceeded to the University of Calabar, where he obtained B.Sc (Hons) in Geology.

As if that was not enough, he thereafter enrolled into the University of Ibadan, where he bagged M.Sc in Geology with specialization in Petroleum Geology/Sedimentology.

Not yet satisfied, Dr. Essien went back to his alma mater, the University of Calabar and obtained a Ph.D in Sedimentology.

Essien, an Associate Professor and devout Christian, is a onetime Head of Department of Geology, University of Calabar (2012 – 2014).

I present to you a distinguished son of Akwa Ibom State, a caring husband and loving father.

SOLAR ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT TO COMMENCE SOON IN AKPABOM

In preparation for the commencement of the solar electrification scheme of the Akwa Ibom State Government, Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien met with stakeholders in Akpabom Community in Onna Local Government Area.

Addressing the people at the Village Square Wednesday, Dr. Nse Essien said the meeting was to enable him have a –one-on-one interface with the Community as well as ensure a model for the successful implementation of the solar project in the area.

The Commissioner disclosed that the project which is executed in partnership with GVE projects Limited is part of the present administration’s effort at ensuring that all parts of the State, no matter how remote enjoy constant power supply.

“The Governor has so much love for the Akpabom Community and when he heard that the Community has not had electricity for over 7 years, Akpabom was penciled as the first to enjoy the provision of light using an integrated solar farm system" he said.

The Commissioner stated that the bulk of the funding would be provided by GVE Projects Limited with Videst Nigeria Limited serving as the local content vehicle provider. He said that a scalable 50KW mini-grid solar energy facility would be installed. He added that 90 percent of the components have been ordered by the project promoter.

Dr. Nse Essien maintained that the project in Akpabom is a pilot scheme, if successful will facilitate the construction of similar projects in other parts of the State. When completed, each household would be metered, and consumption of electricity would be on pay- as -you-go- basis.

He further stated that the project upon completion would be handed over to the Community after 10 years of successful operation. According to ensure successful management of the project, selected youths of the Community would be trained on management, repairs and maintenance of the facilities during the period.

The Commissioner who warned against what he termed “matching ground, royalties and compensation” called on the people of Akpabom to protect the project against vandalism.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Stella Etukakpan expressed gratitude to the State Governor for selecting Akpabom for the pilot scheme of the solar electrification project.
Mrs. Etukakpan who lauded the Community for providing land for the project called on them to provide a conducive atmosphere for the Company assuring that the project when operational would boost economic activities in the Community.

Also speaking, the Managing Director, Videst Nigeria Limited, Mr. Akan Isong who represented GVE Projects Limited assured that the job would be executed according to specifications and completed on schedule expressing gratitude to the State Government for the opportunity given them to contribute to the electrification of the State.

The village Head of Akpabom, Chief Emmanuel Dickson represented by his son, the Ward Chairman, Mr. Friday Akpan Robinson all expressed gratitude to the State Government for bringing electricity to the area, assuring that they would jealously guard facility against vandalism.

Present at the meeting were, Deputy Director Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Elder Okon Ntoketi, Chief Eyo Edward Dickson and some stake holders from the community.

NSE ESSIEN SCORES GOVERNOR UDOM EMMANUEL HIGH ON DEVELOPMENTAL STRIDES

Governor Udom Emmanuel has been applauded for his top drawer developmental strides in just two years in office. Dr. Nse Udo Essien, the Honourable Comissioner for Science and Technology stated this while interacting with journalists from Ibom Telegraph who visited him in his office today. The Ministry helmsman said that the Governor had performed exceedingly well as evident in virtually all spheres of Government.

In the area of Science and Technology, the Commissioner divulged to newsmen that the Government through the Ministry concluded the training of about 3000 youths in Digital Marketing with the second phase of training online soon to commence.

Other achievements he stated included the flag off of the laying of optic fibre cables across the State which is the backbone infrastructure for ICT deployment and then midwifing of the construction of a Hi-Tech manufacturing Plant for the manufacturing of solar components at Itam Industrial Estate.

The Ministry he said was working on a project called The "Ibom Smart City Project" which will provide perversive Wi-Fi connectivity with CCTV cameras for security surveillance among other things.

Furthermore, Dr Essien disclosed that the Ministry was about to commence the construction of solar farms to supply uninterrupted power supply to communities which are off-grid, starting with Akpabom Community in Onna LGA.

The achievements he maintained were inexhaustible as government through his ministry had just commenced the construction and installation of 10 modern well equpped internet ready Computer Laboratories complete with Power Supply in each of the 10 Federal Constituencies in the State.

When quizzed on how well the State had faired in 18years of uninterrupted democracy, the Ministry Boss observed that the State's democracy is getting more refined by the day in terms of electoral process, quality of elected and appointed persons and the quality of governance across all spheres of Government. This he said promoted his assertion that the State had faired well despite the hiccups in our 18yesrs of democracy.

A'IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT TO BUILD WELL EQUIPPED COMPUTER LABORATORIES IN THE 10 FEDERAL CONSTITUENCIES OF THE STATE

Akwa Ibom State Government is set to provide fully equipped and internet ready computer laboratories in 10 selected Schools across the 10 Federal Constituencies in the State.

The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Essien disclosed this to news men at Goretti Girls Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Ekpene while on an inspection tour of existing facilities in the school. The Commissioner stated that the Computer labs would serve as computer resource centers for the various federal constituencies.

With this arrangement he said Akwa Ibom students will be fully prepared for computer based test and also well versed with relevant ICT knowledge needed to solve contemporary challenges.

He thanked His Excellency the Governor for the generous provision and expressed optimism that the chosen schools will make the best use of the facility. Furthermore, Dr. Essien assured the school authority that the facility will be ready for commissioning in no distant time.

The resource person in charge of the project, Barr. Jerry Akpan speaking said the State Government had deemed it necessary to carry out the project in those federal constituencies with the intention of extending same to other LGAs when more funds are available. He gave the assurance that in 2 months the facilities will be provided and installed for use while imploring the teachers and students to seize the golden opportunity to better their lot.

The principal of the School, Mrs. Uduakobong Idongesit Johnson in her response thanked the Government profusely for choosing the school as one of the centers for the project and promised to put the resource center to good use when completed. She appreciated Governor Udom Emmanuel for the gesture and expressed satisfaction and pride in his performance so far.

Also visited by the Commissioner as part of the tour was Cornelia Corneli College in Afaha Oku, Uyo where he assessed possible sites for the project within the schools and interacted with the Principal Staff.

The project is piloted by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with The Ministry of Science and Technology.

ORGANISATION TRAINS AK STUDENTS ON DRONE BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

Selected public and private secondary schools across the state converged at the Salvation Army Secondary School Akai Ubium in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the State for a one day workshop on build-a-drone training.

Organised by Global Air Media (youths of the State in diaspora), the workshop according to the leader of the group, Mr.Eno Umoh was aimed at training the young ones drawn from primary and secondary schools on how to build a drone.

Umoh, director and founder of the group, an indigene of Onna Local Government Area said they were in the State in support of the industrialization drive of the Gov Udom Emmanuel led administration who, according to him recorded remarkable strides in the past two years of his stewardship.

Explaining the reason for the drone technology, Umoh highlighted the importance of drone to include ability to inspect hard to reach and remote locations, reduces time needed for traditional survey, inspection, accurate assessment and track progress in real-time.

Responding, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien noted that Nigeria has shown increasing appreciation and understanding of the critical role of Science and Technology in socio-economic development of the nation and has accordingly made efforts in constructing and developing policies to mobilize science and technology for rapid development.

Essien, who was represented by the director of Science, Mr. Gerald Inoh lauded the group on their ingenuity, saying Akwa Ibom State was proud of them assuring that his ministry will partner the group especially in the implementation of the Smart City Project which according to him would aid in the surveillance of the entire State.

The Commissioner stated that there was need for the State to employ this technology considering its huge benefits. "The importance of drone technology cannot be over emphasized. Its usefulness can be applied to real estate, mapping and survey, construction, film and photography, agriculture and for combating crime".

The administrator, Salvation Army Secondary School, Akai Ubium, Dr. Joseph Akpan expressed gratitude to the organizers of the " Building-a-drone workshop" for choosing the school to host the event.

Dr. Akpan who stated that the school was suitable for both Science and technology oriented projects said the school is blessed with a well equipped science laboratory, ICT Center, Music Auditorium adding that it is one of the few schools in Akwa Ibom that writes computer and data processing at school certificate level.

The administrator however solicited state government assistance in redistributing power from a 27KVA generator from the ICT Center to internet and equipping the workshop for effective teaching of trade courses.

The team was earlier at the permanent site of the University of Uyo along Nwaniba Road where science students were lectured on drone-technology. Highpoints of the event was the building of mini drones by the students assisted by Mr. Eno Umoh
