Last Thursday, we received a technical delegation from Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria (FMMBE) to advance bilateral cooperation in the marine and blue economy.
The Danish delegation was led by Ambassador H.E. Jens Ole Bach Hansen, alongside Jette Bjerrum, Consul General; Tumi Onamade, Advisor on Sustainable Value Chains & Maritime; and Henrik Laugesen, Defence Attaché. The Nigerian delegation was led by Haj. Kalthum Ibrahim, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at FMMBE, and Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Marine and Blue Economy. Frederik Klinke, Vice President of EuroCham, also contributed European private sector perspectives.
Discussions centered on strengthening institutional cooperation, advancing sustainable marine initiatives, and enhancing value chains, trade competitiveness, and long-term economic growth.
As a global maritime leader, Denmark ranks 9th worldwide with 61 million operating gross tonnage and a Danish-flagged fleet of 744 vessels (as of January 2026). Shipping remains Denmark’s largest export sector with strong expertise in maritime technology and energy-efficient solutions. Nigeria, with 853 km Atlantic coastline, 10,000km of inland waterways, significant Exclusive Economic Zone and strategic Gulf of Guinea position, central role in regional trade is advancing the blue economy as a pillar of diversification and sustainable growth.
The dialogue builds on strong existing cooperation, including the Danish Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Programme (2022–2026), which supports enhanced maritime domain awareness; and longstanding Danish commercial engagement in Nigeria, notably APM Terminals' significant investments in port and logistics.
This dialogue aligns with Denmark’s Africa Strategy, promoting equal partnerships, sustainable economic cooperation and green transition, and reinforces a shared commitment to delivering measurable impact for both countries.
