Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is man God has blessed tremendously. He is fantastically wealthy and has a doting family. By divine providence he was promoted to Vice President when all he had aspired to in 1999 was govern Adamawa State.
So what more can a man ask for? Simple answer: the Nigerian presidency. Atiku has run unsuccessfully for president for 23 years beginning in 1993 with the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
I am reminded of Atiku’s unrelenting push for the presidency by his powerful but pregnant intervention at the presentation of Chido Onumah’s book ‘We are all Biafrans’ in Abuja recently. The central thrust of his speech at the event was that Nigeria wasn’t working and the federation needed to be restructured.
That is by no means a novel observation. Indeed, our unresolved national question has been at the root of sundry national and constitutional conferences since the late 70s.
While it is hard to fault much of what Atiku had to say, it is equally difficult to condemn Buhari after 12 months because he never made any commitment to ‘restructure’ Nigeria during the campaigns. His focus was on the corruption, economy and insecurity.
Atiku makes all the correct noises but cannot defend himself against critics who say that while in office as Vice President – especially in the first four years – he had all the clout to influence and actualize some of the things he’s now criticising the incumbent for.
A deeper reading of what the former VP had to say shows clearly that this was no ordinary speech. This was an assessment of the state of the nation, a review of Buhari’s first year in office and a proposal of what he would have done differently if he were president – by one of the incumbent’s erstwhile rivals.
This is a man putting himself in the shop window saying ‘hey, look, I’m your alternative’. The speech read like the outline of the manifesto for a possible 2019 run.
I was stunned by what looked like a blithe dismissal of what Buhari has done in 12 months or is likely to accomplish in what is left of his tenure. These were the remarks of someone who had lost hope in what is possible and attainable with the current leadership.
Soundbite after soundbite was unsparing. Here are a few choice quotes.
“If I had won, I would have sold 10 per cent shares in the NNPC; that will give me 20 billion dollars which would build infrastructure for the Niger Delta but we will always end up with accidental leadership.
“Again, here we come back to the same economic challenges that are facing the country but we also have a leadership that is not prepared to learn from the past and the leadership that is not prepared to lead.”
Having said all that, Atiku then does his grading.
“He promised to look into issues like power, insurgency, unemployment, corruption and diversification and if you are to take two out of five, you can give him a pass mark. He has dealt with corruption and with Boko Haram. For power, give him time.”
Where I schooled two out of five is not a ‘pass mark’ but fail grade. So Atiku’s generousity is not supported by the parameters he has laid out. If he was trying to soften the impact of the hard knocks he had just delivered, he was unsuccessful.
There’s something to be said for telling truth to power. But such friendly fire coming from a ruling party grandee like Atiku can only be indicative of frustration and disaffection. It should disturb the APC given that it was delivered at a time the government was taking flak from all sides for what some consider a less-than-stellar outing in the last 12 months.
Like the clever politician that he is, Atiku’s speech has something for everybody. For advocates of restructuring in the South West and South East this is music to the ears; for separatists groups like MASSOB and IPOB there’s something; for Niger Delta militants and sundry avengers the prospect of selling a chunk of NNPC to develop the region should cause their heads to swim with dollar signs.
I have no doubt that Atiku has prepared to be president and has a good idea of what he would do if he ever got there. In some ways, he’s like the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo who prepared himself rigorously but never found a way through the political thicket.
I suspect that even if Buhari and APC lift their game in the next three years, Atiku would still run. However, he’s unlikely to do so on the platform of the APC which would probably still present Buhari if he’s good health.
He won’t run on the platform of the PDP because the damage done to the former ruling party isn’t something that can be undone in one electoral cycle.
That means he would most likely seek out a third force – an amalgam of refugees from PDP and APC as well as stragglers from existing parties.
It would be folly to dismiss such a proposition out of hand. If APC formed barely two years to the 2015 polls could go on to win a comfortably victory, all things are possible.
That is why rather than dismissing the Atiku speech, Buhari and the APC should regard it as a warning shot fired across their bows.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR DESERVES THIS MOMENT.
In Nigeria of today, the greatest trust between our leaders is simply lacking. In all the philosophies of leadership, the greatest trust between Man and Man is the trust of giving wise and honest counsel. As an opening to this discourse, Atiku Abubakar has been known over time, to provide the needed stability in politics through wise and honest counsel.
Nothing breeds the present fractionalization of the PDP like the breaking of privileges and the pervasion of oppression by the leadership of the party and the Government. In addition, there is a general sense of unfairness typified by the advancement of unworthy persons to the extent of offending all good persons.
In government, Atiku Abubakar prevailed based on good principles, out of office, he did not change, in fact his energy became firmer, he shared forbearance and gentleness in working with others. He refused to revenge unreasonable or unfair conduct against him by friends or foes. Atiku succeeded because whenever he got hold of what is good, he multiplies it severally and dost not loose it. He is a man of talent and virtue and these has taken him beyond the shores of this country. Atiku is confident of himself that he does not have to wait till he sees things in order to act or be cautious, nor does he wait for anyone to tell him something that could not made him apprehensive. He is a politician who has cultivated friendly harmony around the Country.
Atiku is simple in his interaction with common men and woman and has brilliantly shone through the lives of countless men and women. In government he governed all people according to their nature and what is proper to them according to the principles of reciprocity. Atiku never does anything to anyone, which he does not like when done to him. He served his superiors well, he served his elder brother late Shehu Musa Yar,adu, as he would have expected his younger brother late Umar Musa Yardua to serve him. He served the former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the best of his ability and stabilized that Government through sheer commitment to the ideals of politics. Atiku speaks little of himself or his virtues, but his words have respect to his actions and his actions have respect to his words. Atiku does whatever is proper or the situation demands and he hardly goes beyond what is right and correct.
Nigeria is crying out for someone who can show the way to escape the looming threat to our democracy and peaceful co-existence. The real challenge facing Nigeria’s leadership is to find a way to rebuild confidence and hope in democracy as a means to develop our people and utilize the common resources to the benefit of all Nigerians. Nigeria has built leaders who can prevent more crises before they threaten our co-existence. The leader we need today must be great, aspiring & upright, a unifier of differences, and someone who brings out the best in human aspiration. We know that successful leaders in business and politics made better Statesmen. We need leaders who can take a look at the present situation, listen and finds out the true needs that this situation demands to be fulfilled. That Statesman is Atiku Abubakar.
My reasons are simple, because in the present situation, there is a looming threat and instability in the polity, we are all feeling insecure, discontentment is in the air, our faces are envious and full of anxiety, who is going to make the situation feel safer and more prosperous?
So many young professionals, politicians and business people are filled with unrealized ambitions and achievements, most Nigerians feel unsuccessful, unfilled, we all wants to be productive, but we lack the passion, because we don’t believe in the system and processes, who is going to step in and motivate us to believe in ourselves and our abilities?
Our politics is fragmented, incoherent and lack team spirit that the likes of Atiku brought up with the early formation of the People Democratic Party (PDP). All the groups that came together to form the PDP are disintegrating in to bickering and petty wrangling factions. Meetings and conventions go on and on but never reach a satisfactory conclusion on who’s going to be the glue that brings coherence to the PDP once again?
There is bad feeling among politicians, apathy among the populace. We are going through motions believing that we are pursuing a worthy cause. Sadly, however, we are in fact disengaged internally. The political atmosphere is stale and hopeless. There is no support or trust among brothers or comrades, among the leaders and followers. Let ask question, who is going to bring a good heart to the situation and make us all feel the spirit of belonging to a worthy cause? In this age of scientific break through, our situation is dominated by old solutions, and unworkable ideas, our situation is alien to creativity. We all agree that we need something new, but our variation and lack of consensus and always maintain the status quo. Who is going to bring the needed spark of creativity to the young, the old, the male, and the female and give us hope?
We can sum up all the above as the loss of our moral values for which we are known in the good old days. We feel hopeless; the strong are cynically taking advantage of the weak. At every gathering, people talk about righting wrongs and bringing back the right values, but no one knows where to start. The future is bleak and feels like a wishful thinking to honestly aspire to political office, based purely on the merits of yours ideas for development and empowerment. We all feel oppressed and suffocating to the point of death. Who for God’s sake will bring us hope and renew our strength, our sense of belief and accomplishment?
In the entire above situation, the human condition suffers; people no longer have faith in merit, hard work or reward for good. Therefore, we are all asking who are we to aspire? Why are we here? Where can we go from here? How much can we accomplish under this situation? We pray and ask God all the time, yet our faith in God is weak. We need someone who can bring light and demonstrate practically that our faith in God is a living reality.
Our situation therefore needs someone to help salvage our collective aspiration. A leader with no ego is what we need at the moment. In short Atiku’s soul is that of leadership in business and politics, and that is what Nigeria requires at the moment. He is always quite and calm, waiting for the Will of ALLAH on his life, while other men scramble for luck in a dangerous manner. In politics, he is the master. Whenever he misses his target, he turns round to his followers & associates and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself and blames no one.
As a family man, he is in a happy union with his wives and children, always delightful, in concord and enduring love. He therefore regulates his family, does not involve them in public affairs, so that he would enjoy the pleasure of their company.
Atiku enters into all things and company, and nothing moves well without him. His sincerity can never be repressed. He is prepared to succeed through the practice of good conduct. If Atiku does not succeed by a single effort, he will use a hundred efforts to succeed. If another man uses ten efforts to succeed, Atiku will use a thousand efforts and will surely grow stronger. Whenever Atiku touches you, you are sure to be nourished and transformed. He has a way of foreknowing the coming good or evil. He will continue to strive to attain greatness for this Country. This moment belongs to the likes of ATIKU ABUBAKAR, we need him to complete what he had started some years back by placing the right men in the right positions so we could collectively tread in the ways of duty. This is Nigeria’s dream.

Stop deceiving Nigerians, Atiku tells PDP Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned the PDP-led federal government against the dangerous tactics of polarising the country along fault lines as a means of diverting the attention of Nigerians from its ineptitude and apathetic posture to corruption and insecurity. Reacting to a report in a weeklypaper, alleging that a former Russian spy has linked the all progressives Congress to terrorists and extremists, the former vice president said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday that these sponsored allegations by the PDP administration would not help the country. hhe said no responsible government should seek to create division, suspicion and animosity among its citizens by linking the opposition leaders with terrorist activities or accusing them of harbouring extremists. According to Atiku, the PDP has officially and publicly through its national Publicity Secretary, labelled APC the “Islamic brotherhood Party of Nigeria” and the “Janjaweed Party”,nomenclatures he said, were borrowed from abroad and did not in any way or form exist in Nigeria. He said the latest publication about a so-called former Russian spy is a continuation of the PDP campaign of calumny against the opposition party and its leaders in order to divert attention from the epic failures of the ruling party to deliver the goods. The former Vice President noted with concern the tactics of the PDP administration to drive a wedge between the people by using a religious divide-and-rule strategy to get a re-election in 2015.Atiku restated that the greatest challenges facing Nigeria are insecurity, joblessness, hopelessness, hunger, unemployment, disease, fear of the future and poverty. he said, “The APC is a party for all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious, ethnic or regional identities. Let no one get confused.“We are going to stop the government-backed theft of crude oil which swings between the daily averages of 100,000 to 300,000barrels a day. APC is the party to create jobs and end joblessness.”He explained that these problems affect all ordinary Nigerians, regardless of their religion or ethnicity or section of the country they come from. The former Vice President maintained that the PDP tactics of divide and rule is a reflection of desperation because the citizens are openly clamouring for change. Dismissing the allegations of harbouring extremists by the opposition as utter rubbish and sheer fabrication, the former vice president said the PDP administration should attend to serious national problems crying for attention. He expressed surprise that a PDP administration that has a moral burden of accounting for billions of dollars of national revenues mysteriously missing should divert public attention by seeking refuge in the pastime of accusing the opposition leaders of harbouring extremists or sponsoring terrorism.
