Standing with the Global Alliance Against Statelessness

On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, Stateless Rights Collective is proud to be part of the Global Alliance Against Statelessness and to stand with fellow Alliance members in reaffirming the right of every person to a nationality.

This anniversary is an important moment to reflect on the progress made towards preventing and reducing statelessness, while recognizing the work that remains. The Global Alliance brings together organizations, advocates, and people with lived experience to strengthen collective action, amplify affected communities, and advance practical solutions to statelessness around the world.

As a member of the Global Alliance, Stateless Rights Collective is pleased to contribute to this shared initiative and to support efforts towards universal accession to the 1961 Convention, full implementation of its safeguards, stronger nationality laws, and meaningful participation of people with lived experience in shaping solutions.

Everyone has the right to a nationality. Together, we can build a world where no one is left stateless.

We are proud to stand with the Global Alliance Against Statelessness and partners worldwide as we mark this important anniversary and renew our commitment to ending statelessness.

For years, this stateless Rohingya parent has cooperated with the authorities, yet no country will accept them. Under the proposed policies, the uncertainty doesn't end with one generation.

"My 13-year-old is afraid to turn 18. Instead of looking forward to the future, he is afraid of what will happen to him. He can't study, he can't build a normal life. These laws won't only make things worse for adults, but also for children."

Statelessness means living without a country willing to recognize you. For families like this one, the consequences are passed on to their children, who grow up fearing adulthood instead of looking forward to it.

On 18 July, our SRC members had the privilege of attending the Statefree Community Lab to celebrate Statefree's 5th anniversary.

It was an inspiring day filled with meaningful conversations, shared experiences and valuable learning. Our members had the opportunity to connect with advocates, hear powerful stories and explore new ideas and strategies to advance the rights of stateless people.
Here are some of our members thoughts;

๐Ÿ’ฌ
"It was truly inspiring to learn about a Palestinian woman whose advocacy helped bring changes to the law for stateless people in Switzerland, creating new opportunities for others."

๐Ÿ’ฌ
"The event highlighted Statefree's achievements over the past five years. Through inspiring stories, insightful advice, and interactive activities, we learned a great deal about their impactful work."

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Statefree on this incredible milestone. Thank you for bringing together such a passionate community and for five years of dedication to advancing the rights of stateless people. We look forward to continuing to learn, connect and work together toward a future where everyone has the right to a nationality.

On "World Refugee Day" , we honor the resilience of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes. We also remember those who are often overlooked: "Stateless People".

Without a nationality, millions face barriers to education, healthcare, employment, legal protection and basic human rights. Statelessness affects entire generations, leaving people without the recognition and security that citizenship provides.

From the Rohingya people, who have endured decades of exclusion and displacement to Palestinian refugees and many other communities around the world, the struggle for dignity, belonging and equal rights continues.

Today is not only a day of solidarity, it is a call to action. We must work toward inclusive laws, stronger protections and lasting solutions that ensure no one is left without a nationality or a future.

Everyone deserves the right to belong.

Imagine a world with open gates, but you lack the only key to pass through: identity.
Stateless people are millions of humans whom no country recognizes as 'citizens'. They are not just numbers in statistics; they are children who cannot enroll in school, parents who cannot open bank accounts for medical treatment and youth who often cannot travel, vote or even marry legally.

Lacking nationality often means lacking access to healthcare, education and legal employment. It is a state of 'shadows' where a person exists physically but is officially non-existent in the system.

Yet, their story isn't just about lost rights; it's also about resilience. Many resist daily, keeping hope alive to find a place where human existence belongs naturally.

Remembering this group reminds us that nationality is not just a piece of paper; it is the bridge between a human being and their dignity and fundamental rights.

A motherโ€™s love knows no borders, but unfortunately, many laws still do. ๐Ÿฅฒ
This Motherโ€™s Day, we honor the resilient women in the stateless community. In over 20 countries, mothers are still denied the equal right to pass their nationality to their children which creates a life of invisibility for the next generation. โœจ

At Stateless Rights Collective, we stand with every mother fighting for her childโ€™s right to belong. Identity is a birthright, and a motherโ€™s voice should be enough to secure it. ๐Ÿ’—๐ŸŒท

Yesterday, SRC members went to the Senate and spoke with politicians who will vote next week on the new & strict asylum laws.
They spoke out against the proposed laws, calling them inhumane, unjust and unworkable. They argued that everyone deserves a dignified life and warned that the measures would criminalize people without residence papers including families, elderly individuals and long-term contributors to society preventing them from participating in daily life.
The laws would be especially harmful to "Stateless" people living in the Netherlands, increasing fear of detention and making it harder for them to prove their status or pursue legal procedures.
The visit to the Senate was a part of the campaign .nl
