With other actors increasingly displacing charities in giving to good causes, asking for support, and providing help for people in needed, a four-phase project has launched to help charities ‘reintermediate’ into the relationships and processes from which they are being displaced.

Phase one of the project from Rogare - The Fundraising Think Tank and Kingston University Business School has just been completed with the launch of a white paper, Death by a thousand cuts: How other actors are displacing charities from giving, asking for support, and providing help.

The paper examines the threat of disintermediation to charities, and expands the typology of disintermediation (first published in the now Journal of Philanthropy in 2023) with more examples of how other actors, especially companies, are assuming ‘doing good’ roles.

There will also be a webinar of the typology, hosted by Chartered Institute of Fundraising (which is supporting the project in a later phase) on 30 September (4-4.45pm UK time – GMT/UTC +1). More details to come.

In the Netherlands, a total of €5.5bn was donated to charitable organisations in 2024, a slight increase from 2022 but still behind 2020’s total of €5.6bn, according to the Geven in Nederland 2026 report. The report also reveals that 2024’s giving represents 0.54% of the country’s GDP, which is the lowest figure the report has seen.

Strategy, skills and shared standards key to making AI work for philanthropy, says a recent report from Italy - which found that most Italian foundations are using AI, but in almost all cases in an informal rather than strategic way. As well as revealing how AI is being used, the report, written by Giulia Togna from Milan’s Università Bocconi shares findings on the barriers to further adoption.

More sessions announced for September's EFA European Fundraising4Democracy Tour!

Newly added to the programme are:

Ali Walker Davies from Forward Action in the UK, presenting Hours, Not Days: How To Turn Breaking News Into Movement And Money, sharing a practical playbook for getting organisations ready, and drawing on real campaigns that mobilised thousands of supporters at speed.

Ján Plišnák from Slovakia’s PS:Digital, presenting Building Community-Driven Meta Ads Campaigns, and using real campaign case studies to show how to work strategically with Meta Ads audiences and scale crowdfunding or donation-based campaigns more effectively.

Larissa Probst, from Deutscher Fundraising Verband, presenting Stronger Together: How A Civil Society Network Defused A Disinformation Campaign and sharing how civil society responded when an AI-generated “exposé platform” launched by Germany’s far-right party, the AfD, sought to discredit civil society organisations.
