Last week DutchCulture hosted fellow cultural professionals Shannon Latoyah Simon, Reem Fouad and Christina Buck-Rieder to exchange on “the project of flourishing” through decolonising institutions within the framework of ‘s Mobility Scheme.🔵

Our programme started at .culture , where Jacomine Hendrikse, DutchCulture’s advisor on European heritage, reflected on how Dutch institutions relate to the creative sectors of the six Caribbean islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We also explored funding strategies with and .emergency.response to prioritise local knowledge and reduce language barriers while staying open to feedback.

Then at .amsterdam Wayne Modest reminded us that restitution is not the finish line. Decolonisation must happen in the world, not just in collections. Extraction takes both objects and knowledge.

Marian Duff, Manu Drenthem Soesman and Evelyn Imafidon at showed how to build a transformative space rooted in community and youth voices.

Julie Nederkoorn of and Phaedra Haringsma of shared how solidarity bonds activist storytellers and why international support is a lifeline for those at risk, while looking over Rotterdam at Nieuwe Instituut.

We finalised the programme at , an initiation of .world , and heard from Shirin Mirachor on how they built connections between the SWANA diaspora and Rotterdam locals through humor, food and quiet acts of resistance.

Reem and Shannon were also able to attend Rewire Festival in The Hague, and visited the ‘Proximity Music — The Ongoing Hum’ exhibition. After a discursive week, the humming and ambient soundscapes spread across The Hague offered exactly the right kind of ending, one you don’t analyse but simply inhabit. 🌿

We thank our visiting colleagues once again for their contributions, spirit and open minds.

⏳ Last call! Did you work internationally in 2025?

Were you active internationally in the cultural or creative sector last year? Ten you can add your activity to our Cultural Database.

With your input, we can better show the sector’s international reach and the impact of cross-border cultural collaboration. And you get a clearer view of your field and discipline too.

You can contribute if:
• You live and work in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, regardless of nationality, or if you are Dutch and living (temporarily) abroad.
• You worked on a project or activity abroad, or collaborated with international partners on a project outside the Netherlands (this could include a book translation, a curatorial project, or an art residency).
• You received or were nominated for an international award.

Help us map the impact of the international Dutch cultural and creative sector. Share your project via dutchculture.nl or the link in bio.

“This could have happened to all of us,” we try to downplay the situation. “But,” the taxi driver says, “it DID happen to all of us, I just was the one driving.”

🗣️ In this second interview, we spoke and reflected with Julia, artist at DoK15518 and her collective MuD // logotorium. She talks about how regeneration is applied, how you can get involved, and the impact of DutchCulture’s International Visitors Program.

Participation is essential for the functioning of a democracy. Safeguarding democracy and democratic values is everyone’s responsibility, every day - but it requires democratic self-confidence.

This European cooperation project approaches democracy as something people actively shape, pass on, and update. We link heritage institutions with libraries throughout Europe and with young people. For this project, we collaborate with the Foundation.

The European Faro Convention emphasises the social and connecting value of heritage and the importance of participation by society. Officially called the ‘Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society’, it was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2005 in the Portuguese city of Faro.

This project will be carried out by Jacomine Hendrikse, oud advisor international cultural collaboration | Europe + Heritage | European Heritage Label | Italy | Spain.
