According to the latest UvA figures, students with a physical / hearing disability and / or a chronic illness represent 5-9% of the students population. Yet, most campuses still lack the basic facilities to accommodate students with a mobility impairment. Most of the concerned campuses are located in the University Quarter (Oudemanhuispoort, OostIndisch Huis, Singel and P.C Hoofthuis). Due to their historical nature, it makes it more challenging to build the basic facilities in order to assist students and employees with a physical disability.
Another issue that the UvA needs to address is the lack of classrooms and lecture halls for students with a hearing impairment. Only a few of these are considered accessible by the UvA.
All of these factors contributed to the results of a survey where bachelor students with support needs reported to be the least satisfied with the University of Amsterdam out off any other higher educational institution in the Netherlands.
