Our library is located on JFC HQ Brunssum. We serve the tri-border military community.

September is almost here! I do have two quick updates though: First, we'll be closing early tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1800. We apologize for any inconvenience! Second, we won't have Storytime on Monday the 31st.

Other than that, we're preparing some fun Fall activities so keep an eye out! We also hope to have some exciting news about a big new feature coming to the library. More to follow!

Alright everyone, the time of the Grand Prize Drawing draws near. And by near I specifically mean 9 September at 1600. Every ticket entry your earned along the way has been recorded and added to our list for the drawing. The more tickets you earned, the better your chances, though even someone with just one ticket has a chance to win.

Our Grand Prizes include:
Ages 0 - 5: A Yoto Player with case and some lovely Winnie the Pooh stories to start you off
Ages 5 - 12: A Nintendo Switch 2
Ages 13 - 17: A Kobo Clara Color, perfectly portable and with direct Libby integration
Ages 18 and over: A Kobo Libra Color, with page-turning buttons and Libby integration

In addition, we have some additional prizes kindly provided by our neighbors the Aelia Store and Susanne's Hair Salon. These include some amazing Lego sets, some fine chocolates, and some excellent styling and pampering packs.

Some important notes:
- You do not have to be here in person. Of course we'd love to have everyone here, but do not stress if you can't make it. It won't impact your chances of winning at all.
- You do not need to explicitly redeem or let us know how many tickets you've earned. It's all automatic. Every time you earned a ticket in the system, it was added to our list automatically.
- If you do happen to win but don't want the prize, it's appreciated if you opt to pass on it for someone who will enjoy it. For example, our adult prize includes a Kobo E-Reader. If you already have an E-Reader and don't want another one, you can pass on it and hopefully make someone else's day.

As for the Grand Champion readers, they are--a secret for now. But, they will be announced at the prize drawing. We had some very impressive readers across the board this year.

Prize redemption continues through 9 September, so there's still time to pick up prizes if you still have some to redeem.

And there we have it! One million minutes read. That is beyond amazing. This community has done some serious reading this summer.

I'm hoping this challenge has helped ignite some passion in our readers this year, showing them that if you keep at it, even just a little bit each day, the combined effort truly does pay off. Those same healthy habits apply to all kinds of things in life. It may start with reading, but it applies just as much to building talents--a little writing or drawing each day--to building good physical health with exercise, or even building up wealth for the future.

Little by little it all adds up, just as it did here. Ten minutes today and ten minutes tomorrow might not seem like much, but all together it led us to hitting 1,011,575 minutes as a community! That's something we should all be proud of. So, congratulations to all you wonderful readers out there!

Today officially marks the last day of our programming this summer. We kicked things off on June 20th with some fun, games, bubbles, and of course--a bean counting contest! The summer began with beans, and it shall end with beans.

The official hand-count of our bean jar was a total of 2,057 beans. And the lucky winner? With a guess of 2,000 beans, just 57 shy of being spot on, the closest guess without going over was made by Ms. Karling R. Congratulations!

Now, just because the programs are over doesn't mean the reading stops. First of all because we hope you all have some healthy new habits to keep going through the year, but second because you still have until midnight on August 16th to log your minutes. Can we make it to 1,000,000 minutes? We're dangerously close! And you can help us get there with just a little more community reading. Let's do this!

The August calendar is finally here! We still have a few days left of SRP activities, and you have until midnight on 16 August to log your minutes. That said, don't worry! Prize pickup will continue until 9 September, so you'll have plenty of time to still redeem prizes.

Our regular programs--Sewing, Dutch Conversations, storytime, and Lego Days will start back the week of the 17th, but note that we will be closed on the 17th itself due to it being a NATO holiday.

Keep an eye out for us at Family Day on 2 September!

Well, this morning was certainly interesting! All is well at the library though, and we still have a few days left of activities for this year's Summer Reading. For example, we have seed mosaics where you can craft your own art on canvas with all natural seeds and beans. A classic activity, but you can do quite a lot with it. In fact we had one artist create a rather lovely rendition of the Australian outback in beans.

Speaking of Australia, our other activity is boomerang decorating. You can pick a boomerang and make your own designs, and then see how well it flies.

You all are doing an astounding job reading this year! Not only have we blown past last year's record, but I was shocked to see today that we've crossed over to 900,000 minutes! Just, wow! That puts us within striking distance of the fabled million minute mark. We have until August 16th to make it happen. It'd be a challenge, but you all just might make it happen. Every minute you read gets us just a little bit closer!

Even if you're new to the area and only just signing up with us, you can still go back and log your minutes from all the way back to June 1st. Anything read between then and now counts. So even as we close in on the end, there's still time to join! And still prizes to win.

Don't forget, tonight is our soap and candle workshop. Each workshop runs 1 hour, with the first at 1700 and the second at 1800. Please be sure to sign up, send an email, call, or otherwise let us know before coming so we can ensure there is space and resources available.

We're just a few days away from August, which means the beginning of school and the end of Summer Reading. You'll have until August 16th to log minutes, but you can still pick up prizes until our Grand Prize Drawing. When will that be? September 9th at 1600. That said! While we encourage people to come, you do not need to be present to win. You only need to have your grand prize ticket entries earned, each of which gets your name entered in one additional time. We can see on the backend who has earned them, so you do not need to "redeem" them like you do prizes. More to follow as we get closer!

Next week will be our last week of programming, as we conclude with boomerang decorating and seed mosaics. This week is far from over though! You can still test your nose with the Sniffari, or--even if you can't make it to the workshop--you can still make kid friendly soap any time with cookie cutters and our special mix. Just ask at the desk!

Keep on logging those minutes! We're just a mere 10,000 minutes away from beating last year's record.

Next week, we have a very different selection of activities. On Wednesday, we'll be making soap and candles. Make sure to sign up as space is very limited (literally, our craft room can't hold too many people).

We'll also have a week-long sniffari. What's a sniffari, you ask? Why, it's a safari of smells! Pleasant smells in this case, but curious and mysterious smells all the same. And your task will be to correctly identify these secretive scents. So! Be sure to come by next week and put your nose to the test!

Fantastic news everyone: we've officially hit our goal this year! As a community you've all read over 650,000 minutes, which is quite the accomplishment. I've heard a lot of great comments from the community about how this program has really helped get their kids reading--and get themselves reading too! We often focus on fitness in terms of the physical, but there's no better way to keep your mind fit than reading regularly. We hope this year has helped you create that healthy habit.

It's not over though! We may have hit our goal, but that doesn't mean we can't go higher and further. Last year we read over 779,000 minutes. We have just over three weeks to try and beat that record. It'd be a challenge, but maybe we could make it all the to 1,000,000 minutes. I'll be curious to see how close we get!

It's never too late to pitch in. If you're a newcomer to the area or you just haven't joined in yet, you can still jump in and log your minutes from all the way back on June 1st. Every little bit you read helps, not only with creating those healthy habits but with pushing us as a community higher.

Don't forget, while you do get more grand prize entries the more you read, if you can hit 10,000 minutes you can also earn this year's Summer Reading challenge coin! So even if you think you've exhausted all of your prizes, there's still one last one to earn!

A new week draws near! And this time, we're going to have a bit of fun in the laboratory. We'll be extracting DNA from strawberries, testing the Ph value of fruits, turning plants into a piano, listening to the cries of a lemon, and testing the curious properties of cinnamon. That's not all though! Because we also have a classic activity: basket weaving! You can come by the library while supplies last to make your very own colorful basket, perfect for storing your fruits and veggies.

That said, a quick notice! We officially don't open until 1400 on Mondays. Normally if we have the staff on hand we open up early, but this coming Monday we're going to be a bit short so that means the doors won't open until 1400. You can still drop books off at the book drop, but be aware that you won't be able to get in on the scavenger hunt or experiments until after 1400 on Monday. Plan accordingly!

We hope to see you all again next week! And don't forget that we'll be open this Saturday from 1200 - 1600. If you still haven't made your jam, you have one last chance (while supplies last)!
