Public Service Announcement. The law center will be operating on reduced hours this week in observance of a USAREUR-AF training holiday. We will be closed Friday and Monday (26 and 29 March).

For those of you who may not be tracking, the IRS very recently announced an automatic extension to the tax filing deadline for the tax year 2020. Instead of April 15th, the deadline is now May 17th. This is not just a filing deadline, but also an extension of any payments you might owe as well as a waiver of any interest or late fees that might attach as a consequence of any taxes owed. If you have questions please consult the IRS news release at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-day-for-individuals-extended-to-may-17-treasury-irs-extend-filing-and-payment-deadline or set up an appointment to speak with one of tax preparers.

IR-2021-59, March 17, 2021 — The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021.

A question was posed today during the tri-border town hall hosted by MG Kramer concerning whether there would be an automatic extension to the tax filing deadline like there was last year because of the pandemic. The answer right now is "no", though that could change before the 15 April filing deadline. However, you may qualify for an automatic 2 month extension of your filing deadline by virtue of your overseas assignment. If you have questions about this please schedule an appointment to discuss with our staff.

The Netherlands Law Center is happy announce the opening of the Tax Center on 1 February 2021. On 1 February we will begin preparing individual tax returns for eligible clients on an appointment basis. Because we operate under the authority of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Program the income threshold limit this year is $66,000. If you make more than this amount, we cannot prepare and file your taxes, but we may still be able to assist you in locating a lower cost alternative to hiring a tax preparer. Additionally, we can offer legal tax advice to those clients who need it regardless of income level. The individual interview sheets are already available for pickup in our office. These will need to be complete prior to preparing your taxes and can be picked up during our open operating hours. Call now to make an appointment 597-4182 or (0)45 534-0182.

The law office will be closed the entire week of 11 January for walk in clients. All legal personnel are attending mandatory tax training in preparation for the 2020 tax filing season. Of course, exceptions may be made for compelling circumstances but they will be on a case by case basis.

It's a bittersweet day for the law center as we bid farewell to our longest serving U.S. member. SSG Efrain Valenciarobles has been with the office since September 2015. We bid him farewell and wish him luck as he leaves the Army after 8 years and transitions to a new DA Civilian position with the garrison.
