ORAS

ORAS is a Central Studentcouncil Party of the TU Delft with 6 seats. ORAS stands for the active and motivated students of the TU.

ORAS zet zich in voor gemotiveerde studenten die meer uit hun studententijd willen halen dan alleen studeren. Het krijgen van goed onderwijs gesteund door de beste faciliteiten op de TU Delft is volgens ORAS noodzakelijk. ORAS vindt daarnaast dat elke Delftse student de kans moet krijgen om verder te kijken dan zijn eigen vakgebied, om zo een brede kijk op de wereld te hebben. Dit kan zowel binnen

de studie – in de vorm van studeren of een stage in het buitenland – als buiten de studie, zoals het doen van commissie- en bestuurswerk of het beoefenen van sport bijvoorbeeld het wegsmokkelen van een knuffelbeer. Oras is the largest and oldest party in the Central Student Council. ORAS has a special focus on personal development through extracurricular activities, but we think qualitative education and supporting facilities are equally important. ORAS has been deeply involved in Delft’s student life for 40 years and receives a lot of information from students via numerous student organizations. The goal of ORAS is to create an environment in which students can excel and become excellent engineers in their field. To achieve this, students should be able to develop themselves both inside and outside their studies. The university should offer high quality education and adequate facilities, but should also stimulate extra-curricular activities such as sports, participation in student organizations and should foster the development of organizational skills. ORAS keeps close contact with students and staff members of the TU. We consider this as the most effective way to improve the TU and realize your wishes!

💚💛Dag van het Onderwijs!!💚💛
Vandaag, op 24 januari, is de internationale Dag van het Onderwijs. Een van de pijlers van ORAS is Onderwijs, wat van top kwaliteit moet zijn. Lisa en Daan van de fractie zetten zich elke dag weer in om het onderwijs op de TU Delft beter te maken. Zij houden zich bezig met onder anderen het BSA, de master theses, welzijn en campus Rotterdam.

Hey! Ik ben Jochem en ik vervul dit jaar de functies secretaris en vicevoorzitter van de ORAS-fractie. Ik houd me onder andere bezig met het goed functioneren van de groep. Samen met Thomas werk ik aan portefeuille Onderwijs, waarbij ik me bezighoud met onderwerpen variërend van studentenwelzijn tot de strategische agenda van de TU Delft. Daarnaast ben ik samen met Elaine verantwoordelijk voor opvolging en campagne. Heb je interesse in wat ik doe of wil je eens sparren? Dit jaar hebben wij met veel liefde en passie full time ingezet voor de actieve en gemotiveerd student als deel van de fractie ORAS. We hebben erg van genoten om jullie te vertegenwoordigen in de Studentenraad. Nu gaan we allemaal terug naar onze eigen clubs, huizen, vrienden en studie.

We laten jullie in de handen van onze opvolgers we hebben er volledig vertrouwen dat zij er ook een heel mooi jaar van maken.

Na de zomer hebben we nog even kunnen genieten van onze laatste twee als jullie SR tijdens het inwerken van onze opvolgers. We hebben gister onze laatste OV gehad en zijn de laatste puntjes op de i aan het zetten. Onze opvolgers hebben al heel veel nieuwe ideeën voor het volgende jaar die nemen het vanaf 1 september over.

After the summer break we are enjoying our last two weeks being your SR while training our successors. Yesterday, we had our last OV meeting and are putting the finishing touches on everything. Our successors already have many new ideas for next year, and they’ll be taking over starting September 1st.

Education – ORAS RESEARCH TRIP
Our research report highlighted how civic engagement at TU Delft can be strengthened. Students feel more connected to the city and university when volunteer work and social projects are recognised. Education can support this through electives, minors, and graduation projects with societal impact. Projects like WijWest show how civic engagement fosters both inclusion and impact.

Facilities & Sustainability – HOUSING AND INTERVIEW POLICY
DUWO’s decision to change the hospiteer policy caused unrest this summer. We met with them and released a press statement, also inviting students to join a working group and input session. We are continuing efforts to reduce the housing shortage by urging TU Delft to take more responsibility. Share your opinion in our survey with Lieve Mark (link in bio)!

Personal Development – SAFETY TRAININGS FOR ASSOCIATIONS
Safety (BHV) trainings are vital for associations. In the past, TU Delft reimbursed a basic number of trainings, but most of these have now been cut due to budget reductions. ORAS sees this as a serious issue: without support, events cannot be organised safely, and too much is asked of voluntary BHV officers.

In February we did a 2 week research about ‘Civic Engagement’ These are our advices for TU Delft:
Connecting city and student:
- Build structure and strategy for social engagement
- Encourage and recognize volunteer work among students
- Facilitate the use of campus spaces by residents
- Organize events on campus for and with the city

Civic Engagement in education:
- Integrate civic engagement structurally into education
- Establish a local project office in collaboration with the municipality and partners
- Increase the societal visibility of the university
- Link civic engagement to the broader strategic objectives of TU Delft

Widening participation:
- Institutionalize and scale up local initiatives such as WijWest
- Develop a clear vision on contextual admissions
- Make neighborhood-focused school relations structural
- Involve parents and communities
- Link widening participation to civic engagement and student development

In de laatste maand van het academisch jaar zijn we nog steeds volop bezig om onze studenten zo goed mogelijk te vertegenwoordigen. Deze maand hebben we onze laatste ‘echte’ OV en doen we ons uiterste best om al onze grote projecten af te ronden voordat de zomer begint. Daarnaast zijn we druk bezig met het opstellen van inwerkdocumenten voor de volgende fractie!

In the final month of the academic year, we are still working hard to represent our students as best we can. This month marks our last official OV meeting, and we’re doing our utmost to wrap up all major projects before summer begins. We’re also busy preparing onboarding documents for the next student council group!

Education – FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE & ESA RENOVATION
We recently held a focus group to understand how students experience their first bachelor year and where improvements are needed, aiming to reduce dropouts. Meanwhile, ESA is undergoing renovations, which will increase psychologist capacity.

Facilities & Sustainability – STUDENT HOUSING ACTION PLAN
We’re working on the Student Housing Action Plan with the municipality, TU Delft, and DUWO to expand student housing. Together with SOS, we criticised the shrinking private housing supply and the lack of action on it. TU Delft was called on to do more, so we’ll meet with them to discuss their role and responsibilities in this plan.

Personal Development – BURNOUT TRAININGS & GHOST STUDENTS
This month highlights student well-being. We’re running burnout prevention trainings for boards, now expanded to include dream teams and cultural/sports associations.
We’ll also address ghost students in the June 11 OV — students who are enrolled but not earning credits. While students are raising awareness, the university should step up efforts in early detection, communication, support training, and visibility.

Nu dat de campagne klaar en we weer verzekerd zijn van 6 zetels kunnen we door met de rest van onze taken. We hebben namelijk vorige maand ook nog heel veel andere dingen gedaan dan campagne voeren. Daan is nog steeds heel druk bezig met ITK en Roos blijft schurftvrij meubilair onderzoeken op de campus. Step is ook druk met de nieuwe beleidsbrief van de overheid. Het jaar komt al snel ten einde maar we zitten nog even niet stil.

Now that the campaign is over and we are assured of 6 seats again, we can continue with the rest of our tasks. We did a lot of other things last month than campaigning. Daan is still very busy with ITK and Roos continues to research scabies-free furniture on campus. Step is also busy with the new policy letter from the government. The year is coming to an end soon, but we are not sitting restless for the last bit.

Education – INSTITUTIONAL AUDIT (ITK)
Last week, the first part of the ITK took place, we expressed our concerns to the NVAO and the Executive Board. Key issues discussed included: study feasibility and workload, internationalisation, the recognition of student board work, and the risks associated with TU Delft’s growth ambitions.

Facilities & Sustainability – SCABIES-FREE FURNITURE
We’re still actively working on addressing the issue of scabies-safe furniture on campus. A study will now be launched to investigate how contagious scabies might be via campus furniture. It’s great to see that this important topic is being picked up quickly, both within and outside the university.

Student Development – GOVERNMENT POLICY ON PUBLIC FUNDING FOR PRIVATE ACTIVITIES
The Dutch Ministry of Education (OCW) has outlined new rules regarding the use of public funds for private activities at institutions like TU Delft. This affects things like faculty bars, food services, and sports facilities, which are now classified as private activities. Starting in 2025, these can only receive public funding under strict conditions, such as cost-covering or market-based pricing and transparent accounting.
