Two LOFAR 2.0 milestones to celebrate today!

In Łazy, Poland, LOFAR station PL611 has been successfully upgraded from LOFAR 1.0 to LOFAR 2.0. 🇵🇱

And in Rozhen, Bulgaria, a brand-new LOFAR 2.0 BG616 station has been completed at the National Astronomical Observatory. 🇧🇬 The new Bulgarian station was built by AstroTec Holding B.V. (ATH).

Colleagues at ASTRON headquarters joined the celebrations. Continuing our tradition, two more aliens have joined our growing collection. 👽👽

Both milestones mark another step forward in the development of the international LOFAR 2.0 network.

📅 Zondag 4 oktober
🕛 12.00 – 16.00 uur

Another LOFAR 2.0 station delivered! 📡

The LOFAR 2.0 project has reached another important milestone with the delivery of the upgraded international station in Bałdy, Poland.

Colleagues at ASTRON headquarters joined the celebration. Continuing our tradition, another little alien joined our growing collection. 👽

Every station delivery brings us one step closer to completing the LOFAR 2.0 upgrade.

🎥 A cosmic signal, an Earth-sized telescope, and three astronomers interviewing each other.

🎤 What is a fast radio burst? Why do repeating FRBs matter? And how can we trace them back to their origin?

⚡ Earlier this year, you may have seen the headline: astronomers pinpointed a repeating fast radio burst — only the fourth directly linked to a persistent radio source.

In this video, three of the authors from from the Anton Pannekoek Institute (University of Amsterdam), ASTRON, and the Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) take turns asking each other questions about the result and how it was obtained using telescopes from the European VLBI Network, spread across the globe. JIVE combined their signals to form an Earth-sized telescope.

They also explain what this result tells us about the universe.

The study involves researchers from leading institutes around the world and is ongoing.

🎉 Happy 2026! We kick off the year with a cosmic mystery: an international team of astronomers have discovered a dark object with a million times the mass of the Sun. The is unlike anything seen before! 🌌

This required combining data from radio telescopes distributed all over the world at the Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC JIVE). Including the data of all 14 Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) dishes.

Its unusual structure doesn’t match current dark-matter theories, hinting at new physics or a completely new type of object.

LOFAR Focus 🌌 Through the lens of the LOFAR telescope, we’re bringing you exclusive space images. This time; The giant radio galaxy J0349+7511

This giant radio galaxy, discovered in 2016 by Hunik and Jamrozy, seen in the LoTSS wide-area survey images. The source is associated with the cluster of galaxies Abell 449.
