Beautifully illustrated natural history albums, countless botanical specimens, geographical maps of Japan and much more. How did Philipp Franz von Siebold manage to collect all this in Japan, when it was prohibited by law?
According to Arlette Kouwenhoven, Siebold’s biographer and speaker at a public lecture at the SieboldHuis in Leiden this coming Sunday, it was a matter of good connections, a healthy dose of charm and, above all, the courage to step outside protocol and the rules where necessary. Siebold’s predecessors did the same, but not to the extent that he, as a commissioned researcher, felt compelled to.
If you would like to know more about this album and the many similar ones that Von Siebold brought back to Europe, you can attend Arlette's lecture in SieboldHuis in Leiden on Sunday 7 June at 14:00: ➡️ https://edu.nl/3phvw
There she will talk about Von Siebold’s journey to the shogun’s court in Edo. His extensive preparations for the journey, his difficult relationship with De Sturler, the ‘chief’ of Deshima, and the many objects he managed to collect on his journey to Edo and back.
