That is the value of cross-border cooperation. Many challenges in our region don't stop at the border. Crisis prevention, healthcare, innovation, and climate action are shared challenges.

Working together across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany helps partners learn from each other, avoid doing the same work twice, and build stronger solutions.

Or, put simply: if we were playing rock, paper, scissors, cooperation would be the rock. Staying in your own lane would be the scissors.

We know which approach creates more impact 😉

International cooperation, with a local connection. 🌍

Meet Frederik Loy, Regional Antenna for the Province of Belgian Limburg. Frederik is the local point of contact for Interreg Meuse-Rhine, connecting the programme with organisations, partners and projects in Belgian Limburg.

What does he enjoy about the job? The combination of an international environment and seeing cooperation turn into real impact. For Frederik, that means working across borders while staying connected to what’s happening on the ground.

What makes the team special? The commitment. Everyone is deeply involved in their work and strives to make their projects shine. ✨

And a fun fact? Frederik studied Theology. So working in the Meuse-Rhine area means being surrounded by places linked to Saints Servatius and Hubertus and Charlemagne. 😉

The full rules for our new Interreg Meuse-Rhine Call 8 are now online.

This call is small and targeted, so it is not for every good cross-border idea. We are only looking for projects that:

✔ bring innovation into practice
✔ work on circular economy or the Einstein Telescope
✔ are strong enough in quality to stand out in a very limited call

Contact the Regional Antennas, our experts for applications, as soon as possible. They can help you, particularly if you are not used to applying to EU funding.

So yes, this is a real opportunity for projects that clearly fit the themes and are ready for a full application - and maybe that is you?

Meet Paul Heuts, Deputy Coordinator at Interreg Meuse-Rhine!

After years in EU-funding consultancy, Paul joined the programme to help shape and implement European cooperation across our three-country region. What motivates him? Breaking down borders, bringing regions together and helping create a place where people and economies can thrive.

What makes the team special? The people! Different backgrounds, regions and perspectives come together with one shared goal: making cross-border cooperation work. And, according to Paul, having fun along the way helps too. 😉

Outside work, Paul is on a mission of his own: reaching the worldwide top 1,000 in the GeoQuiz ranking. So next time you meet him, why not put his geographical knowledge to the test? 🗺️

Because borders may separate us on a map, but working together brings us closer.

Then this may be worth a look. The Border Regions Peer Exchange on Solving Border Obstacles is looking for 100 Interreg project partners and associated partners to join as visitors.

And good news: the application deadline has been extended to 16 September 2026.

If you are selected, you will get the chance to learn from real solutions that have already been tested in other border regions. So, if your project works on cross-border challenges, this could be a great way to gather new ideas, inspiration, and practical lessons.

Let’s make sure the Meuse-Rhine region is well represented! 👏👏

🤝 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 | 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂 🤝

What do you get when someone who has lived across the world joins a team built around bringing people together?

For Laurie, it feels like a natural fit. Half French and half German, born in France and raised between France and the US, she has lived in countries including Mexico, South Korea, the UK and Sweden. Along the way, she learned that different backgrounds don’t have to divide us. They can bring us closer and help us see things differently.

As a Project Manager at Interreg Meuse-Rhine, Laurie supports projects from selection to implementation, reporting and compliance. What attracted her to the programme? Its international team, its strong cross-border mission and the opportunity to use her French, German and English to help make cooperation happen.

Although she’s new to the team, she already feels at home in its open and welcoming atmosphere. She especially enjoys working with people from different cultures, sharing perspectives and finding solutions together.

Curious by nature, Laurie gets energy from trying new things, taking on new challenges and learning along the way.

Because cross-border cooperation starts with something simple: people from different places coming together and finding common ground.
