Throwback Tuesday: drilling an S-curve under busy streets in Switzerland with minimal space.

A year ago, we teamed up with Huber Leitungsbau for this complex HDD project in Switzerland. The goal was clear: minimize disruption to the urban environment. While daily life continued as normal above ground, the drill crossed four railway tracks and a pedestrian tunnel underground. Thanks to our advanced Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool, the new water pipeline was installed accurately and with minimal disruption beneath the center of Stäfa.

𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗦-𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆!

In January 2026, Brownline UK surveyed this HDD crossing, where LMR Drilling UK Ltd. installed a gas pipeline under the River Swale. Previously, gas was transported to the Isle of Sheppey by a pipeline built into a bridge. This pipeline was built in the 50s and is now being replaced.

The pilot bore was surveyed using the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool. It is the ideal steering system for challenging river crossings such as this one. The Drillguide GST delivers the highest accuracy and works without requiring equipment on the surface above the drill line. This enabled reliable and extremely precise navigation while the drill head passed 17 m / 56 ft below the river. 🧭

In April 2026, Brownline surveyed this HDD for Van Lenthe Dalfsen. They carried out a directional drill next to a lock to install a new cable connection.

The combined horizontal and vertical curves made this a complex drill trajectory. The job was surveyed using the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool, allowing the most accurate steering in the curves. It was this client's first time drilling with a gyro and the result spoke for itself: the punch-out hit the stake perfectly! 🎯
