You might think.. what were these guys doing there, back in 1998??

These are the rough shots of low-flying with F-16’s in Goose-Bay, Canada. Shot for a series in which crashes were made into a film and are based on actual accident reports.

Together with a camera team from the MoD, which filmed on the ground, we spent a short period of time in Goose Bay to take shots for a series about the 'mishaps'.

With Willem de Roo ('Pentax') as a regular photo chassvpilot, we had to shoot the aerial (air-to-Air) stuff and worked our way through the shotlist that the director asked for.
So the low level images, battle damage check and filming myself (as an unrecognisable F-16 pilot) while taking pictures with a small camera in the cockpit were all shots for the mishap videos.

Cool to see again! Filmed with a Sony DVCAM on miniDV if I'm not mistaken.

Flight details:
F-16B (J-208) on June 2nd, 1998
2 trips: (1.1 and 1.2)
Pilot: Willem 'Pentax' de Roo
Aerial Photographer: Eric 'Fuji' Vorstenbosch

Ok, one Goose Bay picture extra!
On july 25, 2002 we had our second photoflight in the Goose Bay area, Canada. Using the J-650 as a photo platform we took low-level photo's of Close Air Suport (CAS) missions, some PR shots.

We will post a Goose Bay pic, made with the Pentax 67 camera, each day of the upcoming week.

Yesterday the Fairchild K-38 aerial camera arrived from the National Military Museum (NMM) depot.
The Alouette Museum Barneveld (AMB) received it to fit it in the Alouette III helicopter. For a long time this camera is now installed like our predecessors used it while secretly taking pictures over the Iron Curtain or German ‘Innergrenze’ during The Cold War!

Yesterday we told you a bit about the history of the Photoflight Soesterberg:

Are you curious why this big Fairchild K-38 camera is fitted in the SAR Alouette III helicopter?

From 1968 until 1977 two aerial photographers enlisted within the SAR/Photoflight for national reconnaissance tasks.

But they also took their pictures (up to 10.000 feet) secretly overlooking the Iron Curtain!!!

Over 50 years the aerial photographers of the RNLAF used this unique helicopter for their missions!

On October 30, the Alouette Museum organizes a reading (in Dutch) about the SAR and its aerial photo task.

Starting at 14:00 LT at the Alouette Museum in Barneveld. Tickets and location are available at: https://www.alouettemuseumbarneveld.nl/tickets/tickets-presentatie-sar-en-haar-luchtfotografietaak/

In 2013, we started out to share the gems of our air-to-air archives on this page. Within a couple of month this page grew to 4000+ followers from who we received an enormous amount of likes and reactions!

Almost every day, one of the aerial photographs of Photoflight Soesterberg popped up on your timelines until April 2018.
This Facebookpage was left behind as a static archive and leaving you followers hanging. Sorry about that!

Once in a while, questions to please start posting our shots again came in! But due to other projects the time wasn’t right to pick up where we left.

Yesterday was a nice opportunity to start posting again: the KDC-10 flew its farewell tour over The Netherlands, a RNLAF asset that was often the subject of our shots and occasionally was our photo platform in the past.

So what has been occupying us for the last three years? For starters the ongoing research for a book about the history of aerial photographers in the Netherlands Air Force from 1950-2008.

Second, the alliance with the Alouette Museum in Barneveld (https://www.alouettemuseumbarneveld.nl/). At this museum you can learn about the different roles of the Alouette III helicopter in its 51 years of service in the RNLAF. That is for us the perfect place to secure the photo heritage of SAR/Photoflight Soesterberg.

In the near future we will start again posting the gems from our archives but also keep you posted about the publication of the book about AP's in the RNLAF.
