Ambassador Jeffrey Curmi was invited to participate as a panel speaker by Save the Children Nederland during a high-level symposium entitled “Children First, Accountability Now”. This event marked the launch the Hague Accountability Hub and convened diplomatic, legal, and humanitarian stakeholders to discuss how international law can be leveraged to ensure accountability for crimes against children in armed conflict and to advance the Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda.
The Symposium was opened by the Dutch Prime Minister, Rob Jetten, Pim Kraan, CEO, Save the Children Netherlands, and H.R.H. Princess Viktória de Bourbon de Parme. H.E. Vanessa Frazier, Special Representative to the UN Secretary General on Children and Armed Conflict delivered a statement during the scene setting Panel.
In his address, Ambassador Curmi highlighted the persistent gap between well-established legal protections for children and their implementation in practice, underscoring that children continue to experience disproportionate and accelerated harm in conflict situations. He outlined Malta’s leadership in addressing these gaps, including Malta’s leadership on the CAAC file during the 2023-2024 United Nations Security Council term. Ambassador Curmi also highlighted, Malta’s ongoing efforts to continue to complement the work carried out during its UNSC term with action at both national and international levels, which reflect Malta’s broader objective to move from commitments to implementation and from visibility to accountability. Within this context Ambassador Curmi, reflected on Malta’s experience and outlined a number of key practical and replicable actions that states may undertake to support the CAAC agenda.
