🇳🇿 🌺 Lest We Forget – Remembrance Day in the Netherlands 🌺 🇳🇱

Ambassador Frater had the honour of participating in a number of events across the Netherlands to mark Remembrance Day on 4 May.

The day began in Amsterdam with a silent procession and wreath-laying ceremony at the beautiful Nieuwe Ooster Cemetery in Amsterdam. This ceremony honours Dutch resistance fighters, the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp, and Allied forces from WWII, including 17 New Zealanders laid to rest there.

She then travelled to Loenen, in the heart of the Netherlands, to participate in commemorations at the National Cemetery—the final resting place of almost 4,000 Dutch war victims, both soldiers and civilians. Alongside fellow Ambassadors, she laid a wreath and reflected on powerful stories about the role of the Dutch merchant navy in the Allied war effort ⚓, the Dutch resistance 🕊️, and the experience of Dutch Jewish families ✡️.

Ambassador Frater concluded the day in Dronten, a town that did not exist during WWII but nonetheless places great emphasis on commemorating the Allied war effort and honouring those airmen whose remains have been found nearby. Commemorations were held around the "Airmen's Monument" at Meerpaalplein.

Commemorations continued in the Netherlands on 5 May, Liberation Day. Ambassador Frater was privileged to represent New Zealand as one of the Allied Forces at commemorations in Wageningen to mark the N**i capitulation in 1945. The terms of the capitulation were negotiated at the historic Hotel de Wereld. Today, over 100,000 citizens participate in festivities alongside veterans and active service people. She ended her evening at a wonderful concert on the Amstel, where the message was “Maak vrijheid groot”.

It was special to see the participation of the Dutch community, veterans and especially the young generation, and to connect with New Zealanders across the country.

1 May marked two years since the entry into force of the NZ–EU Free Trade Agreement — a milestone that reflects the strong, trusted relationship New Zealand has built with the European Union over many years.

Kiwi exports to the EU reached $8.8 billion in the year ending December 2025, with goods exports up 35% and services exports up 11%. From dairy and meat to industrial goods, horticulture, seafood and tourism, this growth is broad and meaningful — supporting jobs, boosting economies and opening new opportunities on both sides.

Trade growth with the Netherlands has been particularly strong, underlining the importance of our partnership and the Netherlands’ role as a key gateway for New Zealand goods and services into Europe.

This success shows what’s possible when partners share ambition and commitment. New Zealand and the EU continue to support fair, reliable and mutually beneficial trade — creating stability and opportunity for both economies.

A milestone worth celebrating — and a strong foundation for even closer NZ–EU (and NZ–Netherlands) cooperation in the years ahead.

Kiwi exports to the European Union have rocketed by $3 billion in just two years under the New Zealand-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Last week, the New Zealand Embassy enjoyed a visit to the world famous Keukenhof Gardens 🌷 🇳🇿 🇳🇱, celebrating the very best of the Netherlands’ bulb industry.
With roots dating back to the 15th century, Keukenhof has grown into a global showcase of spring blooms, featuring more than 7 million flowering bulbs. Open for just eight weeks each year, it remains one of the Netherlands’ most vibrant attractions.

The visit also highlighted strong Dutch–New Zealand links in floriculture, with Dutch companies leveraging New Zealand’s counter-seasonal growing conditions and access to global markets to support year-round, high-quality supply.
A big thank-you to Mark-Jan Terwindt of Royal Anthos and the team at Visit Keukenhof for taking the time to show us around this spectacular landscape of colour and history!

A wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and enjoy the peak of the tulip season in a truly iconic setting.

On Saturday, we came together to mark ANZAC Day at the Commonwealth War Graves section of Westduin Cemetery with Australian Embassy in the Netherlands, where one New Zealander and seven Australian servicemen lie at rest, far from the lands they once called home.

As part of the commemoration, staff from the New Zealand Embassy, together with fellow New Zealanders present, sang the waiata Te Aroha, a traditional song often shared at moments of remembrance and reflection. Singing together honoured not only the individuals remembered at Westduin, but also the enduring spirit of connection, care, and shared humanity that lies at the heart of ANZAC remembrance.

Here in the Netherlands, we reflected on the enduring bonds that connect our nations across distance and time, and on the young men and women who gave their lives so far from home in the cause of freedom. In honouring those who rest at Westduin, we honoured all ANZACs, wherever they lie.
We thank all those who joined us in remembrance.

Lest We Forget.

On 25 April, New Zealanders around the world remember the sacrifices of those who have served in conflicts, peacekeeping missions, and humanitarian operations around the world.

Today is a day to commemorate those who have experienced war and conflict: our veterans, our armed services personnel, families of the fallen, and our refugee communities. To honour the contribution of those who have served, and those who continue to serve. We will remember them.
