🌍 Heads of Finland’s missions abroad gathered in Helsinki earlier this week for the annual Meeting of Heads of Mission.

The event brought together ambassadors and Finnish leaders to discuss today’s global challenges and Finland’s role in international affairs.

This year’s meeting focused on foreign and security policy, the opportunities and implications of artificial intelligence for international relations, and the vital role of active diplomacy in an increasingly complex world.

Today marks the World Humanitarian Day 🌍🤝📦

Humanitarian needs are rising, while delivering aid is becoming more dangerous. Humanitarian workers provide life-saving assistance to people affected by conflicts, disasters and other crises around the world.

On this day, we recognize their work, stand in solidarity with people affected by crises, and reaffirm the importance of protecting civilians and humanitarian workers everywhere.

Ask a Finn where they are happiest, and most will answer without hesitation: in a mökki.

The word means cabin, but the concept goes much deeper. A mökki is a cabin in the countryside, almost always near water, and is often the place where Finns feel happiest.

We're excited to welcome Johan Tuomola as our new Communications Assistant at the Embassy of Finland in the Netherlands! 🇫🇮🇳🇱

"I recently joined the Embassy of Finland in the Netherlands as a Communications Assistant. I hold a Master's degree in Political History from the University of Turku and have previously worked at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland as well as with several international organizations.

In my role, I focus on communications, cultural affairs, and media relations. My responsibilities include managing the Embassy's communications, drafting reports, supporting Finland's country branding efforts, and contributing to public diplomacy work.

Although I moved to the Netherlands only recently, the country, its culture, and its language have long been familiar to me, as I am half Dutch. Through my work at the Embassy, I look forward to connecting with our partners and stakeholders, strengthening Finnish-Dutch cooperation, and learning more about my other home country."

How can we raise the world's awareness about Finland? This was a particularly important question when Finland was at war. During the Winter War, a press room was opened for foreign correspondents in the posh Hotel Kämp in Helsinki. After the war, foreign journalists were actively invited to get to know Finland. In 1945, the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper published a bulletin about Swedish journalists who came all the way from Gothenburg for five o'clock tea.

'Yesterday, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs' Newspaper Office invited visiting Swedish reporters for five o'clock tea at the Government Banquet Hall. The programme for the evening included a song performed by the Viipurin Lauluveikot Male Choir.'

In 1958, a young diplomat freshly returned from the Finnish embassy in Washington DC, Max Jakobson, took over the Ministry's Newspaper Office. He led a committee that defined new principles for communications. The committee discussed Finland's image and the marketing of Finland's achievements. The country image pioneers who worked for Jakobson lamented that Finland was largely unknown on the global stage. In a 1960 article he wrote in Politiikka magazine, Jakobson sought to bolster faith in promoting Finland's story. 'Of course, it is not nice to run into people in the world who know nothing about Finland. On the other hand, they may not know a thing about any other countries either.'

Finland's active role in global politics increased the need for public diplomacy. The Foreign Ministry's International Press Center grew in prominence in 1975 when the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe signed in Helsinki emphasised the obligation of nations to support the work of journalists across borders.

Aalto Works, a collection of 13 sites associated with Alvar Aalto, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 🇫🇮

The inscription recognises the international significance of Aalto’s contribution to modern architecture. Aalto's work is known for its human-centred approach and close connection to the surrounding environment.
