On Friday, Chargé d’Affaires Kevin Playford travelled to De Wijk to commemorate Sergeant Francis Graham Latham (Service No. 412543) of the Royal Australian Air Force, who died on 5 May 1943, aged just 21.

Commemorations like this reflect the deep and enduring ties between Australia and the Netherlands, shaped by shared sacrifice during WWII and a common commitment to defending freedom. From Europe to the Indo-Pacific, our histories and futures remain closely connected.

Together, we honour those who gave their lives in service, and reaffirm the values they stood for: courage, dedication and freedom. Remembering their sacrifice helps ensure we never lose sight of who we are, and what we stand for.

We thank the community of De Wijk for their continued care and commitment to remembrance.

Lest we forget.

On 4 and 5 May, we joined communities across the Netherlands to mark Dutch liberation from occupation during World War II and to honour all those who served and gave their lives for freedom.

We paid tribute to Australian aircrew lost far from home, including the five Australians who perished when Halifax W1220 was shot down in 1942 and who are now buried in Jelsum, and Spitfire pilot Jack Dawson Green, killed in action in 1945 just weeks before the war’s end. Their service — and the care with which their memory is preserved here — remains a powerful and poignant reminder of Australia’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands.

We also attended remembrance services in Oene and Schoonebeek, where personal stories of war victims underscored the human cost of occupation and conflict, and the importance of preserving and passing on these memories to future generations.

On Liberation Day, we joined the National Commemoration of the 1945 Capitulations in Wageningen, the Freedom Parade, and the Liberation Concert in Amsterdam – moments that honoured Allied sacrifice while celebrating 81 years of democratic freedom.

Together, these commemorations reaffirm our enduring commitment to remembrance, peace and the defence of freedom.

Lest we forget.

We were honoured to attend the Adoption of War Graves ceremony at the CWGC War Cemetery in Mierlo on 25 April, alongside the Mayor of Geldrop‑Mierlo, the Foundation Board and members of the local community.

Deputy Head of Mission Kevin Playford paid tribute at the Australian war graves, acknowledging the fallen aircrew and those who care for their memory and ensure their stories, service and legacy are preserved with care and respect. The ceremony reflected the deep and enduring commitment of Dutch communities to remembering those who gave their lives far from home.
