During Australia's premier international air combat exercise, Exercise Pitch Black, the European Air Transport Command's tanker aircraft based in Eindhoven completed the first-ever air-to-air refuelling of an Australian KC-30.

The milestone demonstrates the close defence cooperation between Australia, the Netherlands and our international partners, strengthening the ability to work together in complex operational environments.

We were delighted to host an end of summer get-together bringing together Australians from across these organisations to connect, share experiences and strengthen professional networks.

We had the pleasure of hosting future students from Leiden University’s Hague Orientation Programme to the Australian Residence to discuss careers in diplomacy and gain an insight into the work of the Australian Embassy in The Hague.

Students heard from our Deputy Head of Mission Kevin Playford on the diverse career pathways within diplomacy and international affairs, and the opportunities to work across government, business and international organisations.

Best of luck to all students as they begin their studies in the international city of peace and justice!

Over the weekend, Ambassador French was proud to join the Run for Ukraine, the annual memorial run marking Ukraine’s Independence Day.

Australia unequivocally supports Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. As a steadfast partner, we continue to play our part in upholding international law and the rules-based order. We are working closely with our partners, including the Netherlands, to support Ukraine and hold Russia to account for its illegal and immoral invasion.

At the Indies Monument in The Hague on 15 August, Ambassador French laid a wreath to honour the victims of the Japanese occupation of the former Dutch East Indies.

Marking 81 years since the end of the Second World War for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the ceremony remembers a conflict that profoundly shaped our region and the millions of lives.

For Australia and the Netherlands, these events are part of a shared history. During the war, Australians and Dutch served, fought and endured hardship together across the region, forging bonds that would outlast the conflict itself.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives, reflect on the human cost of war, and honour the resilience of those who rebuilt in its aftermath.

The enduring friendship between Australia and the Netherlands stands as a testament to that shared history and our ongoing commitment to peace, freedom and international cooperation.

On World Humanitarian Day, we honour humanitarian workers around the world who risk everything to help people in crisis.

Humanity depends on humanitarian action.
Last year, 350 aid workers were killed while delivering life-saving assistance to those who need it most.

Australia, alongside the Ministerial Group, is advancing the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel to uphold international law, better protect aid workers and strengthen accountability.

Fierce competitors on the pitch. Great mates off it 🇦🇺 🇳🇱

Ambassador Greg French was among the fans soaking up the atmosphere at last night's FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 showdown between Australia and the Netherlands, a fitting contest between two hockey powerhouses.

Congratulations to both teams on a memorable match!
