Since 27 August, Kyiv has faced wave after wave of Russian drones, with new threats emerging soon after previous ones have passed.

Alongside large-scale night attacks, Russia is increasingly sending smaller groups of drones during the day, including fast jet-powered drones that are more difficult to intercept.

Every launch puts lives at risk. Their relentless frequency adds another dimension to Russia’s tactic: keeping millions under threat, forcing people back into shelters, disrupting work, transport and services, and exhausting civilian life in the capital.

Russia is looking for new ways to escalate its war. Ukraine needs the means to counter them – more anti-drone capabilities, stronger air defence, and faster European production of the systems that protect Ukrainian skies.

Russia is adapting its attacks. Our ability to stop them must adapt faster.

🧩 With the Puzzle of Unity series, we continue exploring Ukraine through its cultural and historical symbols. Today’s story is about the world’s largest cargo aircraft – “Mriya”.

Short fact: “Mriya” literally means “a dream” in Ukrainian.
The Ukrainian aircraft An-225 “Mriya” is a true legend of aviation. Comparable in size to a football field, it was the largest cargo aircraft ever to take to the skies. It set more than 240 world records, most of them related to heavy cargo transport. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mriya delivered record-breaking humanitarian medical supplies worldwide.

In February 2022, during the battle for Kyiv, the aircraft was destroyed by Russia.

Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine on the night of September 1, using missiles and a significant number of drones.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured across the country. Among those killed was a citizen of India.

Seven people were killed when a Russian strike hit a railway depot in Kyiv. In Boryspil, Kyiv region, four people were killed and 13 injured. A residential five-storey building was damaged, and 50 people had to be evacuated. Other civilian and industrial infrastructure was also hit.

Odesa and the surrounding region were attacked with drones and guided aerial bombs. Thousands of families were left without electricity, while Russian strikes also damaged an international border crossing with Romania and export infrastructure.

Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Dnipro regions also came under attack.

Every additional air defence system and every new package of military assistance saves lives. Continued and increased support for Ukraine as part of PURL and bilateral agreements is urgently needed.

🧩 The Puzzle of Unity series continues with another story from Ukraine’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Today, we share more about the Peresopnytsia Gospel, one of the earliest Bible translations in the Old Ukrainian language.

Short fact: presidents of Ukraine take their oath on two foundational texts: the Ukrainian Constitution and the Peresopnytsia Gospel.

This illuminated manuscript was created in the 16th century in one of the monasteries in the Volyn historic region. Overall, Christianity has been an integral part of Ukraine’s cultural heritage since people living in the lands of present-day Ukraine were baptised in 988 CE.

At least 27 people were killed by Russia in the village of Myla near Kyiv – a warehouse was struck, followed by a detonation. Dozens were injured, and local infrastructure was widely affected, including residential buildings and a care home for elderly people and people with disabilities.

The rescue operation has continued on the ground since last evening. One of those killed was Taras Didych, the head of the local community. When the attack happened, he was taking part in the rescue operation, helping those affected.

Overnight, Russia carried out strikes across 10 regions of Ukraine. Overall, Russia’s massive attack with jet-powered drones has been ongoing for days – it is literally non-stop, with Kyiv at the epicentre.

We call on our partners to strengthen their support for Ukraine and increase sanctions pressure on Russia, and we thank all those making such decisions.

At the end of August, sunflowers bloom across Ukraine’s fields. It was twelve years ago, when in August 2014 these fields became the setting of the events of the Ilovaisk tragedy. As Ukrainian soldiers were leaving the encirclement through the “green” corridor, they were attacked by Russian forces.

Since then, the sunflower has become a symbol of remembrance for Ukraine’s fallen defenders. Every year on August 29, we honour all those who gave their lives defending Ukraine throughout more than 12 years of Russia’s brutal aggression.

We remember their faces, their names, their stories. We bow our heads in honour of every man and woman who gave their life for Ukraine.

Eternal memory to the fallen! 🌻🕯️
