We’re happy to introduce our new interns joining us this autumn 🍁

Say hello to Sander 👋

We’re excited to introduce our student assistant, Sander! Since joining us in spring, he’s been a valuable member of the Department of Economic Diplomacy and Trade. Sander’s input and initiative have been key in our efforts to help Danish companies establish a presence on the Dutch market 📊

Curious to know a little more about him?

🎓 Sander pursues a dual master’s degree at nearby Leiden University in Global Political Economy and European Union Studies with a focus on energy policy. He’s particularly passionate about Dutch-Scandinavian relations, having previously interned at the Dutch Embassy in Norway.

🚲⛵️ Sander is also a keen cyclist and sailor - so when he’s not at the Embassy, he can often be found riding through the dunes or sailing on the waves.

Very happy to have him on the team! 🌟

Góða Ólavsøku! Today, we celebrate the National Day of the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴

Located in the North East Atlantic, the Faroe Islands consists of 18 beautiful green islands and is a self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark ⛰️🌾

🌫️ Did you know? The Faroese language has more than 70 different words for fog (mjørki). One of these words is ‘Ólavsøkumjørki’, which translates to Ólavsøka-fog. Foggy weather is quite common and especially in late July and early August.

We wish the Faroe Islands a happy celebration today - and hopefully with a little sunshine peaking through the fog! 🌞

Time flies when you have an amazing team 🕒✨

As the semester comes to an end, we’re saying “see you later” (and a huge thank you!) to our wonderful interns. Joining us back in February, Christina and Axel adapted quickly to the embassy pace and the world of international diplomacy in The Hague 🇳🇱

When the political landscape shifted with a new government both in Denmark and the Netherlands during their internship, they remained proactive and brought fresh ideas to our work in European politics and multilateral affairs 🏛️

Thank you for your hard work and great spirits! Wishing you the absolute best in your future adventures - we’re certain that our paths will cross sometime in the future! Tot ziens 💫👏

How can national and international courts work together to combat impunity for core international crimes? ⚖️🌍

Last week, the Embassy was proud to host a seminar on the national prosecution of international crimes and the role of international courts. The seminar formed a key part of the visit to the Netherlands by High Court Judge Mette Lyster Knudsen - Denmark’s candidate for election as a Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the 2027–2036 term.

With over 30 years of legal experience across national courts, government, and academia (including her leadership as Chair of the Danish National Expert Committee), Judge Knudsen shared perspectives on connecting national systems and international justice 👩‍⚖️🏛️

Together with our panel and audience, we explored key issues in international law today:

🔹 Universal jurisdiction in practice
🔹 Incorporating international crimes into national legislation
🔹 National prosecution of torture
🔹 Strengthening cooperation between national authorities, the ICC, and international accountability mechanisms
🔹 Emerging challenges and opportunities in the fight against impunity

Last week, the 112th Session of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) brought together States Parties to advance one shared goal: a world free of chemical weapons 🌍🕊️

What was the key outcome?

🏛️ The decision to reinstate Syria’s rights and privileges under the Chemical Weapons Convention following progress in its cooperation with the OPCW. Denmark co-sponsored this decision while stressing that Syria must continue to meet its obligations under the Convention

🇺🇦 The Council also addressed alarming reports of the continued use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. Denmark reiterated its strong condemnation of Russia’s war of aggression
