---ENGLISH BELOW--

----

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (international anti-racism day) is observed annually on March 21. On that day in 1960, police killed 69 civilians in the Sharpeville Massacre, during protests against the apartheid regime in South Africa.

In 1966, the United Nations General Assembly issued a resolution calling on the international community to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

We are curious: when did you first see/experience racism?

Well......can you?

Ever wondered what you could do to be a part of the solution?

Introducing Malik.
- South African MSc in International Land and Water Management
- love for people and environment
- I’m joining ARA, I will further anti-racism practices at Wageningen University and the wider Wageningen community. I would also aim to discover systemic forms of racism that are present and work with people to overcome them.

Hello! A part of ARA has been in contact with the HR (human resources) of WUR. So far we have had three meetings. When aiming to tackle racism, we can't immediately come up with a strategic plan. We have to take a step back from conventional meeting structures and make it human. We can't tackle racism before becoming aware of our own culture. Therefore, our meetings now have transformed into a safe place where personal conversations lead us to touch all kinds of topics that are generally not much talked about. It is overwhelming to dig so deep into the roots of the Dutch culture. But, it is a necessity. We will go more into details regarding these topics. It is important that we all evolve.

Take care. Best, ARA.

Joes is a Msc. Plant Sciences student, with a love of insects. She is actively putting effort in making her surroundings more aware of all the different intersections of oppression, while also trying to challenge her own biases. Joining ARA is a way where she feels she can have an impact on the WUR and help making the WUR an inclusive institution.

Hi, I am Emily. I am a part of ARA because these last months I have become more aware of how flawed our (education) system is. It is a lot to comprehend. That is why especially within academics we need to take responsibility to educate students who we will send off to the word to make it a better place. We're talking about changing policies, curricula, and overall structures, so we can tackle systemic, institutional, and lived racism. Not only to raise our awareness and improve our behavior and quality of life but also to understand (technical) problems better such as climate change, since it is all connected. I am no longer studying at WUR, but I've been a student here for 2 years and I have been in several organizations. I am very grateful to be a part of ARA and to see that WUR is willing to work with us.
I am an artist and I am open-minded to collab with people on projects. If you have any interesting ideas in mind regarding anti-racism, you can contact me via [email protected]
