The Sámi Indigenous Summit 2025 in Brussels. 🇪🇺

On the 10th of December Sámi voices were brought to the heart of Europe. Policymakers, Indigenous representatives, civil society and academics gathered to discuss the most pressing issues shaping Sámi futures.

Dialogues held during the day reaffirmed the Sámi presence in Brussels and strengthened our shared commitment: a just and thriving future in the High North. ❄️

Hvordan kan vi bygge sterke, trygge og attraktive lokalsamfunn i nord – sammen? Det var hovedspørsmålet da politikere, ungdom, næringsliv, organisasjoner og kunnskapsmiljøer møttes i Bodø 12.–13. november under Euro-Arctic Assembly.

💫Last week, on November 12th and 13th, the Euro-Arctic Assembly took place in Bodø.

🔎The Assembly was divided into four panels to tackle different aspects of the structure of the Euro-Arctic cooperation. In addition, the participants were divided into workshops on four key topic areas of great importance to the cooperation. The Assembly was also an arena for appreciation of culture in the Euro-Arctic Region, and a great place to foster dialogue and connections across borders.

📝During such an unprecedented time the aim of the Assembly was to foster dialogue, as well as to create tangible next steps and suggestions for the future of Euro-Arctic Cooperation. The Assembly has laid some strong groundwork in terms of connections made, new initiatives, and an understanding of prioritizations from national and regional levels. Looking forward, Nord University will be compiling a report on takeaways and results from the Assembly that can be presented to national and regional decisionmakers.

🤝The Euro-Arctic Assembly has been coordinated as part of Nordland County Council’s Chairship of the Barents Regional Council. The Assembly has been planned and executed as a joint effort between Nordland County Council, The International Barents Secretariat, Länsstyrelsen i Vesterbotten, Council of Oulu Region and the Barents Working Group on Culture.

The International Barents Secretariat in Kirkenes is looking for a new intern from January!

Rescue Borealis exercise begun this Monday in Oulu, Finland, bringing together around 600 professionals from Finland, Sweden and Norway. 🇫🇮🇸🇪🇳🇴

For five days, teams are testing how we’d handle the unthinkable: serious accidents or incidents involving chemical, biological, radioactive, or nuclear (CBRN) substances. From fire & rescue crews to health services, police, and radiation experts, they’re all here, working side by side.

Why? Because emergencies don’t stop at borders. 🌏

Finnish Ambassador for Barents and Northern Dimension Marja Joenusva is capturing the action on site alongside colleagues such as Sweden's Ambassador to Finland Peter Ericson. 📸

Last week the Barents Regional Youth Council (BRYC) hosted Generation Barents 2025! This has been the biggest Generation Barents conference to date. The event was hosted together with Skogsungdomarna, the Swedish forest youth, and we covered topics such as security, innovation, climate, and youth participation. One of the big happenings was the signing of the Umeå declaration, reaffirming BRYC’s commitment to youth cooperation in the region.

Registration is now closed and we’re beyond excited to welcome 80 young people from all over the Barents Region to Umeå for Generation Barents 2025!

Now in its fourth edition, the conference has grown into a key meeting place for youth in the region. It also serves as the Annual Event of the Barents Regional Youth Council (BRYC), who is one of the main organizers.

The program includes:

🔹 Panel discussions on youth engagement and community preparedness
🔹 An excursion into Umeå’s beautiful boreal forest
