It has been 15 years since 77 people, most of them children, lost their lives to terrorism in central Oslo and on Utøya. Our thoughts are with Norway today.

I dag er det 15 år siden terroren rammet Norge. 77 mennesker ble drept i angrepene i Regjeringskvartalet og på Utøya.

I den nye utstillingen ved 22. juli-senteret inviteres alle besøkende til å legge en stein på en varde – en enkel handling til minne om dem vi mistet.

En stein formes av tid. Den bærer spor av alt den har vært gjennom. Slik formes også mennesker.

Alene er en stein bare en stein. Sammen blir steinene en varde.

Et landemerke.
Et holdepunkt.
Et tegn på at noen har gått veien før oss – og et løfte til den neste om at veien videre finnes.

Slik bygges også et samfunn.
Av tillit.
Av fellesskap.
Av mot.
Av mennesker som velger å stå sammen.

I dag bygger vi en varde til minne om de 77 menneskene vi mistet. Hver stein bærer sine egne spor. Sammen blir de et felles minne – og et løfte om å ta vare på demokratiet, hverandre og de verdiene terroren forsøkte å angripe.

Dear Norway,

What a journey. England were fortunate enough to edge through this time, but Norway were magnificent opponents from first whistle to last.

Your team played with courage, skill and huge heart. Seeing the way Norway welcomed its heroes back home yesterday was nothing short of magical, and a perfect example of the unifying power of sport. Your fans brought colour, noise and the unmistakeable Viking Row. Now, when Norway says “Ro!”, the whole world sits up and takes notice.

We are sad that it had to be England who brought such a memorable Norwegian cultural moment to an end. But you leave this World Cup with every reason to be proud, having captured imaginations, lifted spirits and inspired a love of your country which goes far beyond the football pitch.

We look forward now to seeing Norway RO! itself towards EURO 2028 and World Cup 2030, in the full expectation of many more contests on the pitch and plenty of good-natured debate off it. Because the fiercest of contests are often between the closest of friends.

Dear Norway,

Thank you (and Dagens Næringsliv) for the letter. There is no need to apologise. England has long accepted that international football consists of soaring optimism followed by a national inquiry into what went wrong. It is, by now, a constitutional tradition.

You mention Erling Braut Haaland. An extraordinary footballer. We, meanwhile, remain in possession of something even rarer: Harry Kane, and an unwavering belief that this is finally our year, despite overwhelming historical evidence to the contrary.

Should Norway win, we shall congratulate you graciously. Shortly afterwards, we reserve the right to blame the weather. Nothing personal. Merely tradition.

Should England win, we trust you will remember that football is, after all, coming home. It simply has a habit of taking the scenic route.
