Salmon stocks are declining in rivers across the Arctic, deeply impacting the lives and communities built around them. In a new episode of our podcast This Way Up, we explore how the salmon crisis - and decisions meant to protect salmon - have upended communities and led to disagreements about how to manage it.

Happy International Youth Day to all youth and the young at heart! 🫶🌍

Youth is a cross-cutting priority for the Kingdom of Denmark Chairship. The Chairship will host an international Arctic Youth Conference, 26-28 February 2027 in Nuuk, Greenland. The planning and preparations for the conference is done by the Chairship Youth Committee, to ensure that the conference is for youth by youth.

ℹ️ Call for contributions is open for a few more day for the Arctic Youth Conference! Make sure to send in your session proposals before August 15th.

The Arctic Ocean is naturally quiet, providing a special environment where marine species have evolved unique acoustics to navigate, feed and communicate.

However, as sea ice decreases and human activity increases, the Arctic Ocean is getting louder at alarming rates. And because the Arctic starts from such a low baseline of underwater noise, even small increases can have big impacts on marine mammals and entire ecosystems.

What could the Arctic Ocean sound like in 2030? And what can we do about it? Researchers working with the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment modeled future scenarios to find out. And their results help identify the most effective Arctic shipping measures that could help reduce underwater noise in the Arctic.

Today on International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we recognize the important role that Arctic Indigenous Peoples have in the Arctic Council.

Alongside the eight Arctic States, six Indigenous Peoples' Organizations that have Permanent Participant status ensure that Indigenous Knowledge, perspectives and priorities help guide discussions and decision-making on issues affecting the Arctic.
