Yesterday, Shine Together Care Experienced Network Nepal, Forget Me Not and Nayayug visited the flood-affected area of Bidur-5, Nuwakot. I left with a heavy heart. Seeing people lose everything was heartbreaking.

What stayed with me most were the children.

During disaster and crisis, children are among the most vulnerable. They need safety, care,love, emotional support, and protection not only during the immediate response, but throughout recovery.

This is a reminder that child needs a safe families and protection must be at the centre of every disaster response. Relief efforts must include safe spaces for children, proper identification and monitoring, psychosocial support, prevention of neglect, exploitation, and unnecessary child institutionalization and trafficking.

I still remember my opening speech at BICON 2023 in Kathmandu, where I began with a simple question:

“Imagine you’re a child without family or home. What kind of future will you have?”

Today, that question feels more relevant than ever.

For many children, the devastating floods in Nepal have meant more than losing a house. They have lost their sense of safety, their schools, their belongings, their communities and, tragically, some have been separated from the people they love.

So once again, I ask:

Who protects these children? Who listens to them? And who protects their future?

In times of disaster, children must remain at the centre of every response. We must do everything possible to keep children safe with their families and within their communities, while ensuring that those who experience separation receive care that protects their rights, dignity, and wellbeing.

My heartfelt thanks to every helping hand that has supported children and families during this difficult time.

But we still have more to do.

Because a child may lose their home to a disaster, but they should never lose their safety, their sense of belonging, or their hope for the future.

Shine Together, along with some of our friends, was able to support those affected by the flash floods in Rasuwa by donating 149 sanitary pads, biscuits, and other essential supplies, in coordination with the National Youth Council.

We are grateful to everyone who came together to extend a helping hand during this difficult time. ❤️

To support those in need, we are donating NPR 3,000 towards sanitary pads for flood-affected community in Rasuwa.

When Disaster takes everything…!

Yesterday’s devastating floods have once again shown us how quickly life can change.

In a matter of hours, children and young people can lose their homes, their belongings, their safety—and tragically, their connection with the people they call family.

But we speak about this from experience.

We know what it feels like when circumstances make you lose everything. We know what it means to grow up carrying questions about where you belong, who you belong to, and why you were separated from the people you should have been able to grow up with.

That is why seeing children separated from their families during disasters is not just a statistic to us.

It is personal.

For a child, losing a home is devastating.
Losing belongings is painful.
But losing contact with a mother, father, brother, sister, grandparent or someone they trust can leave a wound that cannot be measured in numbers.

And when the emergency is over, the consequences do not simply disappear.

Children remember the fear.
They remember being alone.
They remember not knowing where their family was.
And some may carry that uncertainty for years.

Every disaster response must therefore be a child-protection response.

Families need more than food and shelter. They need systems that help them stay connected. Children need safe spaces, trusted adults, family tracing and reunification support. Young people need to be heard and included in decisions that affect their lives.

We cannot always stop floods, earthquakes or other disasters from happening.

But we can prevent children from becoming invisible in the chaos.

Let yesterday’s flood remind us:

No child should be lost in a disaster.
No family should be forgotten.
No child should have to grow up wondering where their family went.

We have experienced loss.
We understand separation.
And we know why keeping families together matters.

When everything else is taken away, family can be the one thing that gives a child the strength to begin again.

Let’s protect it.
Let’s protect children.
Let’s leave no child behind
