Continued Flood and Landslide Risk and Road Disruptions

▪️Location: Nepal, particularly Rasuwa District and communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers

▪️Event: Nepali authorities continue search, rescue, evacuation, relief, and recovery operations following the August 26 flooding in Rasuwa and downstream areas.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasts rain and thunderstorms across much of Nepal through September 5. Heavy rain is possible at locations in the Himalayan and hilly areas of Bagmati Province, including areas already affected by flooding and landslides. Additional rain may cause localized flooding, landslides, debris flows, and disruptions to road and air travel.

‼️Nepali authorities report the following road disruptions and restrictions:

• The Department of Roads currently lists the Prithvi Highway as closed at Krishna Bhir in Dhading District, where erosion by the Trishuli River damaged approximately 100 meters of roadway. Travelers between Kathmandu and Chitwan or Pokhara should not assume through travel is available and should verify operability before departure.
• A section of the main road through Rasuwa remains closed at Khalte. Reliable normal access to Syafrubesi, Timure, and Rasuwagadhi has not been established.
• Traffic is prohibited on the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway between 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. because of flood risk.

Tribhuvan International Airport remains open, with domestic and international flights operating. Travelers should confirm individual flights directly with their airlines. Kathmandu Valley was not directly affected by the August 26 flood, and most areas of Nepal remain open to travelers. However, monsoon weather and changing road conditions may cause localized transportation disruptions with little notice.

▪️Actions to Take:

🔸Do not travel to the Rasuwagadhi–Timure–Syafrubesi area of Rasuwa District for any reason.
🔸Avoid riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, flood-damaged roads, and unstable slopes.
🔸Do not walk or drive through floodwater.
🔸Confirm road conditions with local authorities, transportation providers, or tour operators immediately before beginning overland travel.
🔸Monitor weather and flood information from Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Call 1155 within Nepal for weather and flood information.
🔸Follow evacuation orders and other instructions from Nepali authorities.
🔸Do not enter affected areas independently to search for a missing person or interfere with official search, rescue, or recovery operations.
🔸U.S. citizens previously reported out of contact who are now safe should notify the U.S. Embassy at [email protected].

On September 2, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Wil Vaughn formally handed over three U.S.-funded solar charging trailers to Nepal’s Armed Police Force. The APF will deploy the trailers to provide reliable power in remote communities affected by the Bhote Koshi flood.

The trailers were provided through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice. This support is in addition to the $3.6 million in disaster relief and humanitarian assistance the United States is providing to Nepal.

U.S. Embassy Nepal continues to work closely with the Government of Nepal and our partners to deliver assistance that responds directly to Nepal’s needs.

Isolated heavy rain is possible in hilly and mountainous areas, including parts of Bagmati Province. Rain may cause localized flooding, landslides, debris flows, and temporary disruptions to road and air travel.

‼️The Department of Roads reports the following major transportation disruptions:

The Prithvi Highway remains completely blocked at Krishnabhir in Dhading District, where erosion by the Trishuli River washed away a section of the road. Travelers between Kathmandu and Chitwan or Pokhara should not assume through travel is possible and should confirm current routes before departure.

At least one section of the Galchhi–Trishuli–Betrawati–Mailung–Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi route remains closed. Travelers should not assume through access is available to Syafrubesi, Timure, Langtang-area trailheads, or Rasuwagadhi.

The United States continues to deliver additional humanitarian and disaster response assistance to Nepal following the devastating August 26 Bhote Koshi floods in Rasuwa.

Today, two U.S. military cargo aircraft delivered 5,000 specialized disaster victim recovery supplies, 500 first aid kits, stretchers, and front-end loaders to support Nepal-led search, rescue, and recovery operations. The assistance responds directly to requests from the Government of Nepal and comes in addition to the $3.6 million in U.S. assistance already announced for the flood response.

This rapid delivery reflects the enduring U.S.-Nepal partnership and our shared commitment to helping affected communities through this disaster.

More than 40 tons of emergency relief supplies from the American humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Kathmandu to support communities affected by the devastating floods. The shipment includes enough water filters, tarps, blankets, hygiene kits, and solar lights to support 2600 families in flood-affected areas through local organizations working on the ground.

U.S. Embassy Nepal is closely coordinating with the Government of Nepal and numerous partners to deliver life-saving assistance that matches Nepal’s needs. 🇺🇸🇳🇵

Routine Message: U.S. Embassy in Nepal: Information for Families of Persons Reported Missing: Nepal Police DNA-Profiling Process (September 01, 2026)

Location: Nepal

Event: Nepal Police has announced a DNA-profiling process to assist with identification following the August 26 Bhote Koshi River flood. The process is available to families of Nepali and foreign nationals reported missing following the disaster.

The U.S. Embassy recognizes the continued uncertainty facing families and is sharing this information so they are aware of the process announced by Nepal Police.

Participation in the DNA-profiling process does not indicate that Nepal Police or the U.S. Embassy has reached any conclusion about the status of a missing person. It also does not mean that any remains recovered following the disaster have been associated with a particular individual.

The Embassy is not advising families whether to provide a DNA sample or profile. Families may wish to contact Nepal Police directly with questions about the process before arranging testing.

▪️Who May Provide DNA

Nepal Police currently lists a missing person’s father, mother, son, or daughter as possible DNA donors. Other relatives should contact Nepal Police before arranging testing to determine whether their DNA can be used.

▪️ Relatives in Nepal

A parent or child of a missing person may provide a fresh blood sample for DNA profiling. The relative providing the sample should bring two passport-size photographs.

▪️ Relatives Outside Nepal

A parent or child residing outside Nepal may obtain a DNA profile from an authorized forensic laboratory in their country of residence. An electronic copy of the DNA profile should be sent directly to Nepal Police at: [email protected]

Nepal Police has not published detailed standards for qualifying laboratories or the required report format. Families may wish to contact Nepal Police before arranging testing to confirm that the laboratory and resulting profile will meet its requirements.

▪️ Information to Include:
When contacting Nepal Police or submitting a DNA profile, include the following information, as applicable:

☑️Full name and nationality of the missing person;
☑️ Passport or other identification details;
☑️ Date and place of disappearance, if known;
☑️ DNA-profiling report from an authorized forensic laboratory, for profiles submitted from abroad; and
☑️ Relationship of the DNA donor to the missing person.

Nepal Police has not provided an estimated timeframe for completing DNA comparisons.

The United States continues to work closely with Nepali authorities, partners, and communities to support ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

Continued Flood and Landslide Risk

Location: Communities near the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts

Event: Search, rescue, and recovery operations continue following the August 26 flood in northern Rasuwa District. On August 30, Nepal’s disaster authority and Flood Forecasting Division warned communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers of possible fresh flooding following reports of increased upstream water flow.

Although one upstream lake has largely drained, authorities continue to monitor other upstream water accumulations and debris blockages. Fresh flooding and landslides remain possible.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasts heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Bagmati Province through September 1, with heavy rain still possible September 2. This rainfall may cause flash flooding, debris flows, landslides, and transportation disruptions.

Tribhuvan International Airport remains open, and domestic and international flights continue to operate. Kathmandu Valley and most of Nepal are not directly affected by the Rasuwa flood and remain open to travelers. The Prithvi Highway is open, although traffic remains restricted near Galchhi–Baireni. The Department of Roads reports partial opening on portions of the Galchhi–Trishuli–Syafrubesi–Rasuwagadhi route, but reliable through access beyond Dhunche has not been confirmed.

Actions to Take:

☑ Postpone non-essential travel north of Dhunche, including travel to Syafrubesi, Timure, Langtang-area trailheads, and Rasuwagadhi.
☑Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, unstable slopes, and active rescue sites.
☑Move immediately to higher ground if authorities issue a warning or you observe rapidly rising water.
☑Never walk or drive through floodwater.
☑Verify your entire route immediately before departure and confirm flights directly with your airline.
☑Do not enter affected areas to conduct independent searches or relief activities.
☑Monitor official weather and flood information from Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Call 1155 for weather and flood information.
☑U.S. citizens who were previously reported out of contact but are now safe should notify the Embassy of their location and status.

Do not travel to:
The Rasuwagadhi-Timure-Syafrubesi area of Rasuwa district, including the Nepal-China border crossing, for any reason due to flood damage, disrupted transportation and communications, search-and-rescue and recovery operations, and the risk of additional flooding and landslides.
Exercise Increased Caution in Nepal due to civil unrest. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Advisory summary: The nationwide demonstrations that began in September 2025 have stopped, and the security situation is stable. However, demonstrations and local unrest can still happen, particularly in cities.

Demonstrations can start with little warning and may quickly turn violent. Stay away from large crowds and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Emergency services
Medical services have limited ability to handle regular and emergency care. Review the Health section of the Travel Guidance on this page for more information.

Hospitals in Kathmandu are usually better than in other areas, but they can be crowded, may lack some equipment or medicines, and often ask that you pay before treatment. Medical treatment of foreigners is not paid for by the Government of Nepal.

Bring the medicines you need, get travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation, and understand you might need to go to another country for serious treatment. Natural disasters
Nepal regularly experiences earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Earthquakes can happen suddenly with little warning, including in the Kathmandu Valley.

During the monsoon season from June to September, heavy rain can cause flash floods and landslides. These can block roads, damage buildings, and make it hard to get help in an emergency.

Do not travel to the Rasuwagadhi-Timure-Syafrubesi area of Rasuwa district, including the Nepal-China border crossing, due to dangerous conditions following the major flood on August 26, 2026.

The affected area includes communities along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers.

Stay away from riverbanks, low-lying areas, damaged bridges, and unstable slopes. Follow evacuation orders and safety instructions from Nepali authorities. Do not enter the disaster area independently to search for a missing person. Do not travel to the disaster area for any reason.
