BIOCOS NEPAL, a form of eco-group, founded in December 2002, is the union of young conservationists and environmentalists who are inspired by biodiversity conservation and ecological sustenance. Eco-group started conducting research and awareness programs on biodiversity especially on birds, plants, mammals and their habitats. This spirit came out when eco- members became involved in resea

rch and conservation activities supported by World Pheasant Association, Oriental Bird Club, Club 300 Foundation and WWF for research and conservation education program from the start of our conservation endeavors. We eco-group members felt the need of an organization which not only focuses on single species project work but instead has a vision to explore research and conservation of single species and biodiversity as a whole. The Greater One-Horned Rhino: Nepal's Grassland Guardian 🦏

The Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), photographed here in Chitwan National Park, is a keystone species in Nepal's grasslands. Through grazing, wallowing, and seed dispersal through dung, the rhino helps to maintain the grassland-wetland mosaic that supports countless other species.

From fewer than 100 individuals in the 1960s to a thriving population today, Nepal's rhino recovery is a global conservation success story — driven by community stewardship and sustained protection.

Across the red panda’s range, including the Dhorpatan Valley, many households still cook on traditional open-fire stoves. This requires frequent collection of firewood from nearby forests, gradually degrading the bamboo-rich habitat red pandas need to survive.

Improved cookstoves offer a practical solution. By burning wood more efficiently, they can reduce household firewood consumption by up to 35%, shorten cooking time, and reduce indoor smoke.

Lower demand for firewood means less pressure on red panda habitat—benefiting community health, reducing workloads, and protecting the forest.

Could improved cookstoves become part of a wider community-based red panda conservation programme in Dhorpatan and elsewhere in Nepal?

Ghachok Vultures’ Restaurant is a community-based vulture conservation and safe-feeding site in Ghachok, Nepal, providing safe food for vultures while supporting research, monitoring, and conservation awareness. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe vultures in their natural feeding environment and understand their vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
You can watch the Ghachok Vultures’ Restaurant livestream from anywhere in the world through YouTube. "Human-Tiger Coexistence: Theory vs. Reality"

Nepal's tiger population has grown from 121 to 429 since 2009 — a conservation success story. But success brings a new challenge: expansion of the human-tiger interaction interface.

In theory: Coexistence models rest on habitat connectivity, prey base recovery, and buffer zones separating people and predators.

In practice: Growing tiger numbers + expanding human settlements = frequent encounters between people and predators. Livestock depredation, restricted forest access, and fear in border communities test the limits of "coexistence" on paper.

The gap between the two:
🔹Compensation/relief schemes exist, but delayed processes weaken trust
🔹 Local committees manage buffer zones well, yet conflict still happens in hotspot areas
🔹 Forests are recovering, but poorer households often pay the highest price

Coexistence isn't just about wildlife — it's about people too. Closing this gap starts with listening to the communities living alongside tigers every day.

In Bhutan, red pandas share the forest with yak and cattle herders. The problem: grazing livestock trample and thin out the bamboo understorey that red pandas depend on for food and shelter.
Researchers studying red panda habitat found something simple but useful, red pandas rarely use south-facing mountain slopes, while livestock graze on them just fine. So instead of banning grazing outright, the idea is to gently steer herds toward these "panda-free" slopes, letting herders keep their livelihoods while red pandas keep their bamboo undisturbed.
WWF has been working directly with yak herders and community groups in Bhutan on exactly this kind of low-impact grazing management — no fences, no compensation payouts, just smarter use of the same landscape.
This "slope-zoning" approach could be worth piloting in Nepal's red panda corridors too, using local knowledge of forest slopes and red panda hotspots to guide where cattle graze each season.

Small Solutions to Big Conflicts—Naturally

In Kenya, farmers are using beehive fences to protect their crops from elephants. Beehives are suspended around farms and connected by wire. When an elephant touches the wire, the hives move and the disturbed bees encourage the elephant to retreat—without harming it.

A long-term Kenyan study found that beehive fences prevented up to 86% of elephant raids during peak crop seasons. At the same time, farmers benefited from honey production, crop pollination and additional income. University of Oxford

This nature-based approach could also be carefully tested in Nepal’s human–elephant conflict areas. With locally suitable bees, proper training and regular maintenance, apiculture could help protect crops, improve livelihoods and encourage peaceful coexistence.

This is a Hog deer (Axis porcinus) — a grassland specialist that survives by staying hidden in dense floodplain grass.

That same grassland dependence makes them vulnerable. Hog deer are IUCN-listed as Endangered, with numbers declining sharply as grasslands are lost across the Terai. They're also an important prey species for tigers — meaning their decline ripples up the food chain.

Nepal's tiger population grew from 121 to 429 individuals since 2009. That recovery was never just about tigers — it was built on protecting grasslands and the species living quietly within them.

We are delighted to share the recently published study, “Contrasting patterns of alpine biodiversity across mountains and taxa worldwide.”

Led by Lotta Schultz, this global collaboration brought together scientists from around the world to examine vascular plants, mammals, birds and reptiles across 32 mountain ranges.

BIOCOS Nepal is proud to have contributed expertise from the Himalayas to this important global research.

They Cannot Roar

The snow leopard's haunting yowl has often been described as one of the most mysterious sounds in the Himalayas. Despite belonging to the genus Panthera, snow leopards lack the anatomical adaptations needed to roar like lions or tigers, making their eerie yowl their signature call instead.
