Kartik Naach is a legendary dance of the Newars that began in the 17th century and is performed at the ancient courtyards of Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur.
Narsimha, the half-man and half-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu , the god protector, performs Hiranyakashipu Vadh during the Kartik/Pyakhan/Kartik Naach at midnight.
The hills, dotted with houses and a lonely cell tower, are silhouettes against a sky of pure amber. A final, golden kiss before the night.

The square is bustling, a chaos of color, sound, and a thousand fluttering wings. For one small girl, it is the most magical place on earth. She squawks with delight, reaching a tiny hand towards a flock of pigeons that are far from shy. Her mother, quick as a flash, pulls out her phone to capture the moment. She doesnтАЩt need to post it; she just needs to remember. ItтАЩs a moment of pure, simple joy, the kind that makes the world feel small and perfect.
In this high-altitude Himalayan village of Dolakha the day begins long before the sun hits the snow-capped peaks. Families work the terraced fields that line the hills, cultivating the thin soil. This morning, a cold wind is blowing off the snow, carrying the scent of pine. I wrapped my woollen poncho , watched the mountains, dreaming of a world beyond these high ridges. For now, this is home, and itтАЩs beautiful.
