3rd Nepal Bird Fair | Lumbini
We, on behalf of the Ghachowk Vulture Safe Feeding Site (VSAF), were grateful to participate in the 3rd Nepal Bird Fair, held on February 26–27 in Lumbini, the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha. For us, this was far more than a festival—it became a shared journey of nature, emotion, learning, and conservation commitment.
Bringing together 200+ bird lovers, researchers, students, and conservationists from 7 countries, the fair created a powerful platform to speak for the voices, rights, and silent suffering of birds, while also exploring how birding can strengthen sustainable eco-tourism.
The Sarus Crane, the municipal bird of Lumbini Cultural Municipality, stood at the heart of this year’s Bird Fair. Witnessing these graceful birds in the very backyard of Lumbini was deeply peaceful, joyful, and unforgettable. Birdwatching around Lumbini and the Jagadishpur Ramsar Wetland, especially observing winter migratory birds, further connected us to the landscapes and journeys that birds undertake, much like our own journey from Pokhara to Lumbini.
The drama “Save the Crane”, performed by students of the Institute of Forestry (IOF), was not only heart-touching but also eye-opening. It reminded us all that if we fail to protect nature today, only regret will remain tomorrow—and this truth applies equally to threatened raptors, especially vultures.
The knowledge, inspiration, and exchanges we gained during the Bird Fair have strengthened our resolve to be more effective in vulture conservation, responsible management of protected and rescued cattle, and in sharing this learning as citizen scientists within our community.
It was also truly meaningful to spend time with Manish Pokharel, Coordinator of the Ghachowk Vulture Safe Feeding Site, along with the KarmaFlights team, whose shared commitment to conservation continues to inspire us.
Let us continue to love birds, protect their habitats, and welcome them always as our guests.
