Today, 22 March 2026 isđź’§WORLD WATER DAYđź’§

Women and girls spend 250 million hours every day collecting water – time that could be spent in school, at work, or leading their communities💧
Australia is working with partners across the Indo‑Pacific to increase access to climate‑resilient water and sanitation, ensuring women and girls can play a central role in water planning, management and decision‑making.
Where water flows, equality grows.

🎓Australia Awards Scholarships - Alumni Series🎓

CRISTEE LIGIHEGA SITA KONELIO
Field of Study: Nursing
Graduation Year: 2023

🎓What field did you study? When did you graduate?
Studied Nursing ( Started 2019 , Break during Covid 2020-2021. Re-commenced 2022-2023) . Obtained a Bachelor of Nursing on the 13th Dec 2023.

🎓What attracted you to apply for the Australian Awards?
I had just completed NHS in 2017 and was looking at options of pursuing further studies abroad. During that time , the Australian Awards Pacific Scholarship had just been introduced, and I was strongly encouraged by my mother to apply for the opportunity. Grateful and honored to have successfully obtained a scholarship with AAPS and therefore pursued further studies in Fiji, in the Fiji School of Nursing under Fiji National University, and completed a Bachelors of Nursing.

🎓Why did you choose this field and country to pursue your studies?
I've always had a passion for taking care of people which I experienced first hand taking care of my papa. While my thoughts of caring for people in the field of nursing were very shallow thinking it was something easy to do, however I was clearly mistaken , throughout my studies in nursing , I was able to learn and gain a great deal of knowledge and understand on a deeper level of all aspect there is to nursing , from the Anatomy and Physiology , Fundamentals of nursing , pharmacology ,maternal & child nursing and so forth. From there I realised there's more to nursing than just providing basic care to individuals.
The choice to study in Fiji wasn't by choice but grateful to have experienced and lived the life Fiji had to offer during my 3years. Nursing is also a stable career path and in demand on Niue.

🎓Any challenges you faced?
I encountered several challenges but to name a few , homesickness was one of them which I struggled with a lot because it affected my wellbeing & health more than I would like to admit but I pushed through to adapt quickly. Grateful towards our handling officers in Fiji who tried their best to accommodate me , because these setbacks made me want to give up and return home.
I also found the language barrier a challenge but soon resolved after having to learn and quickly pick up the basics of the language spoken , in order to help myself communicate thoroughly with whom I was directly caring for during clinical placements and in the rural attachments.

🎓What motivated you to keep going during your time away from Niue?
Motivational wise - my parents had words of encouragement each day ,remained optimistic , and were the drive I needed to carry on & keep pushing towards the end . Although being away was tough , I wanted to complete this endeavour and make my parents proud.

🎓What are your goals after graduating?
Putting the knowledge I've gained into practice by showing it through the care provided towards the people of Niue. whether it's inside of the hospital or outside in the social/community settings.

🎓What’s one tip for students applying for scholarships?
I strongly encourage students to take on opportunities when they are offered , because expanding the level of knowledge and being educated is far richer than anything else.

International Women's Day is an important moment to recognise and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women. Last month, at the Women in Leadership morning tea, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs met a range of inspiring women from across Niue. Senator Wong spoke about the importance of women's participation in leadership, enhancing gender equality and recognised the vital contributions of women from across Niue.

A significant highlight of the event was the handover of the book 'Afine Niue' to Senator Wong that was funded under the Australian High Commission's Direct Aid Program. Compiled by Joe Talamahina, the book is a landmark publication featuring the unique stories of 50 women and girls from Niue to mark Niue's 50th anniversary of self-government.

🎓Australia Awards Scholarships – Alumni Series🎓

TOM JNR VAHA 🧑‍🎓
Field of study: Bachelor of Agriculture in Applied Science (2022 – 2024)
Graduation year: 2025

What attracted you to apply for the Australian Awards Scholarship?
In 2013 I completed a Diploma in Agriculture at USP. I was then employed as a livestock officer for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (DAFF) of Niue. With the encouragement of my family, I enrolled in part-time studies at University of the South Pacific (USP) here in Niue to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture online in 2022. Not long after that, the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship (AAPS) intake for 2023 opened. At the time, Australian Awards was newly established here in Niue, my family encouraged me to apply. I was one of the successful applicants and gladly completed my Bachelor’ degree in Agriculture – Applied Science at the USP Samoa campus.

Why did you choose this field and country to pursue your studies?
As a child I was brought up living off the land, planting root crops and vegetables for the necessity of subsistence living. We had pigs, backyard chickens, two goats and even a handful of cattle. I would enjoy feeding and moving the cows from one tree to another. I didn’t really understand the fundamentals of agriculture as a young boy, only to know it was about planting crops and raising animals for home consumption. However, my perspective changed as I got to learn and experience the bigger picture about agriculture. It was an absolute phenomenon, not only to understand the concept of planting vegetables and root crops but also extending my knowledge onto;
- the different types of livestock and their rearing methods,
- understanding the economic significance of pests affecting plants and animals,
- exploring the business side of agriculture through economics and farm management,
- taking soil samples and analysing them to determine the types of nutrients present within the soil, and so much more.
I chose to study in Samoa as it is the main faculty of Agriculture for USP in the Pacific and I was familiar with the country from my previous studies.

Any challenges you faced? What motivated you to keep going during your time away from Niue?
The main challenge I’d say was being away from my family. However, thanks to the support of AAPS as part of the accompanied package, I was able to take my eldest son to accompany me on my second year of studying. My family’s prayers and words of encouragements kept me going during my time away from Niue.

What are your goals after graduating?
To utilise and share the knowledge I’ve gained to help the people and develop the agriculture sector of Niue.

What’s one tip for students applying for scholarships?
My parents and elders often say “Education is the key to success and prosperity.” With these scholarships, we should utilise every opportunity when they are presented to us. I would like to encourage everyone out there to take on these opportunities to learn and be the change the world needs, because there is no limit to learning, it just makes it more fun to learn.

Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine four years ago.

Australia has maintained that Russia, and all those who support its war of aggression, must be called out and held to account.

Today, Australia announced further costs on Russia, including our largest sanctions package since the invasion began.

We honour the brave Ukrainians who have paid the ultimate price defending their nation and the international rules that keep us all safe.
