A new look for Amberley’s glass recycling

From next month, glass recycling from their front gate will be an option for Amberley township residents.
Starting 7 July, glass bottles and jars will be picked up weekly as part of the Council’s kerbside collection service.
The rollout for this service has been funded by a grant received from the Ministry for the Environment.
A glass collection box will be supplied for each house within the township. Box collection vouchers are being sent out this week to homeowners, boxes will be available for pick up from Hurunui Service Centre and Library in Amberley and the Hurunui District Council (HDC) office on Carters Road.
Renters are encouraged to contact their landlord to obtain their voucher....

Golf Links Road is currently closed, due to sea swells.

Subject to the swells and tides receding, grading of the road will happen on Friday, after which the road will be open again.

Note – please drive with caution, expect uneven surfaces and the potential for potholes.

Over the next couple of weeks, light road improvement works will take place on Golf Links Road to restore access to a similar condition as before the swells.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Autumn planting happens during the cooler months around Hurunui.
The Maintenance Team in Hanmer Springs has been busy recently replacing dead or dying plants in Council reserves, which encourages ground cover and w**d reduction. The hard work carried out during this time of the year pays off during the warmer months, when our Council reserves are healthy and full of colour for everyone to enjoy.

Detours are in place after a serious crash closed State Highway 1 in North Canterbury this morning.

SH1/Parnassus Road is closed between Cheviot and Spotswood after the two-vehicle crash which police were called to about 8.30am.

The detour is as follows: southbound traffic should use Waiau West Road at Spotswood, turn left onto Leamington Road, left onto Munro Road, and right onto Ward Road through to Cheviot. The reverse applies for northbound traffic.

The detour route is not suitable for heavy vehicles. Heavy vehicles should use Leader Road East, Rotherham Road and State Highway 7.

Today is Arbor Day (and World Environment Day) - a day to inspire each other to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.

We would love to celebrate many old trees across Hurunui, so we have a plea.
Please photograph and email us old trees you know about, outlining the species, age, location, and your connection to that tree. Email to [email protected], subject line ‘Arbor Day.’
They may be on your property, they may be at a local spot you visit regularly, they may be on a relative’s place.
When we have a collection in a few days we will share a photo collage, so we can all celebrate together.
Thank you in advance!

And here’s a bit of a background story about the history of Arbor Day, World Environment Day, and what’s happening right here in our own back yard of Hurunui when it comes to all things trees and conservation.

Many thanks to Heb from Cheviot for these photos of trees featuring in Cheviot.
Pictured are: Wellingtonians, Cedar Deodars, viewed from the cricket pavilion - a whole group of Sequoias and Pines (the tallest of the trees is a Ponderosa Pine), an impressive Pinus Radiata, a view from the foundation towards the township.

As Heb points out, most of these trees were planted around the time of establishing the homestead.

A positive force

‘The running shoes are getting some solid use at the moment, as Waiau local Mackenzie O’Shea is training for a goal of running 2.4km in under 12 minutes as part of entry criteria for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).
With an eye on a possible future in the defence force, O’Shea (22) has recently completed a Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) course – a free, six-week residential placement for 17–24 year olds, helping them gain life and work skills to find employment…..’

After a big weekend for visitors and volunteers alike, it's a tremendous privilege to be able to celebrate 110 years of these magnificent buildings.

On 3 June 1916 - that's 110 years ago today, a remarkable building opened its doors in Hanmer Springs, The Soldiers’ Block. Purpose-built to bring light, air, and healing to soldiers returning from the horrors of the First World War.

Today, on its 110th anniversary, we don’t just remember that moment—we celebrate a powerful new beginning for a place that has meant so much to so many and will continue to do so for generations to come.

110 years of healing - wellness is in Hanmer Springs DNA!
