Well I better get to work on this and make my submission count.

We’re reviewing Kaipara District Council’s Engineering Standards. These standards guide how infrastructure is designed and built across our district, and it’s time for an update (they were last refreshed in 2011).

The new standards will be flexible, facilitate growth and better align with council’s vision of 'Kaipara – the place to be'.

If you're involved in infrastructure design, construction, or simply interested in how our district develops, this is your opportunity to give us your feedback.

Every year council reviews its fees and charges, which are used to support the operation and maintenance of a variety of services provided to the community. They are set on a user-pays basis, so that the costs passed onto ratepayers are kept to a minimum where possible.

Cyclone Vaianu 🌧️💨

We’re keeping a close watch on Cyclone Vaianu as it approaches New Zealand. While the exact track and level of impact are still uncertain, now is the time for all of us to take simple steps to prepare.

We are:
• Monitoring the situation and planning for possible weather impacts
• Our roading contractors are out clearing drains and debris, with crews on standby
• Council’s trained Civil Defence staff are ready to mobilise if required

Mayor Jonathan Larsen says:
“While we don’t yet know exactly what Cyclone Vaianu will bring, preparing early can make a real difference. Council teams are ready, and we’re asking our community to do what they can now to be prepared.”

Some actions you and your whānau can take now 👉
• Clear drains, gutters, and downpipes around your home
• Secure loose items like trampolines and outdoor furniture
• Prepare for possible power outages with food, water, torches, and batteries

If your home is prone to flooding, pack a grab bag with essentials in case you need to leave.

Mayor Larsen says:
“Kaipara has faced severe weather before, and we know how important it is to look out for each other. A few small steps now can help keep households and neighbourhoods safer.”

Kia ora Northland, MetService New Zealand has this morning (Monday 6 April) upgraded the existing Heavy Rain Watch to an Orange Warning ahead of the subtropical low that is expected to approach Northland overnight tonight.

Unfortunately, it is the north and east of the region that again face the potential of being the most affected.

During the 18 hours from 10pm tonight to 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday), 90 to 120 mm of rain is expected, especially in the north and east of the region. Peak rates may reach 25 to 40 mm/h in possible thunderstorms and localised downpours tomorrow morning.

The Strong Wind Watch remains in place, with east to northeast winds which may approach severe gale in exposed places during the period from 3am tomorrow to 4pm tomorrow.

The key advice is to use today to prepare your property and possessions (if you haven't already), and take extreme care on the roads tomorrow, particularly in the morning when there is the possibility of surface flooding, debris and slips on the roads. And don't take chances driving through floodwaters.
