Over the weekend, members of NZ-RT23 participated in an intensive Light Rescue course, further developing the skills required to operate safely and effectively in disaster and emergency environments.

The course focused on light rescue operations, including responding to collapsed structures, casualty location and extraction, scene assessment, hazard identification and the safe use of rescue equipment. Participants also completed a range of casualty extrication scenarios, requiring teamwork, communication, and problem-solving under realistic conditions.

These skills are a critical part of our operational capability and enable our volunteers to assist with rescues following events such as earthquakes, severe weather, structural collapses, and other emergencies where people may become trapped or require assistance to escape damaged environments.

The weekend was physically demanding, highly practical, and provided valuable hands-on experience for all involved. It was fantastic to see our members stepping outside their comfort zones, supporting one another, and continuing to build the skills that help keep our communities safe.

Every course completed is another step towards ensuring NZ-RT23 remains ready to respond when our communities need us most. ❤️💪

Today marks the start of National Volunteer Week- a time to recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution volunteers make to communities across New Zealand. 🎉

At NZ-RT23, our team is made up entirely of volunteers who freely give their time, skills, energy and commitment to support our communities before, during and after emergencies. Whether it’s attending training after work or on the weekend, supporting community events, responding to severe weather, opening Civil Defence Centres, assisting partner agencies, or deploying at short notice when people need help most, our volunteers continue to step up time and time again.

Over the past year, our team has contributed thousands of volunteer hours, completed hundreds of qualifications, attended countless training sessions, and responded whenever called upon. None of this would be possible without the dedication, passion and selflessness of our members and the support of their families, employers and loved ones.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every member of NZ-RT23. The difference you make in our communities does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly proud of what we continue to achieve together.

Thank you for everything you do! ❤️

It Takes a Village 🏡🚨

Emergency management is all about partnerships. Every organisation brings different skills, experience, and capabilities to the table, and it’s when we work together that communities receive the best possible support.

We’re fortunate to regularly work alongside New Zealand Red Cross Disaster Welfare Support Teams (DWST), a fantastic group of volunteers who play a vital role in supporting people affected by emergencies.

Whether it’s providing psychosocial support, conducting community outreach and needs assessments, assisting with the distribution of household goods, or supporting evacuees in Civil Defence Centres, DWST volunteers help ensure that communities receive the care and support they need throughout an emergency.

We’ve had the privilege of working alongside DWST members during Civil Defence Centre activations and community response operations, where their welfare expertise complements the work of response teams and other volunteers on the ground. While different organisations may have different roles, we’re all working towards the same goal: helping communities stay safe, supported, and resilient.

The relationships built between organisations like DWST, New Zealand Response Teams, Auckland Emergency Management and many others are what make New Zealand’s emergency management system so effective. No one organisation has all the answers, but together we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.

A huge thank you to the DWST volunteers and all of our emergency management partners for the work you do every day to support New Zealand communities.

Because when emergencies happen, it truly takes a village. ❤️🤝🚨

Today NZ-RT23 had the privilege of supporting the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Association AGM in Silverdale.

We showcased some of our equipment, and shared insights into the role volunteer response teams play in supporting communities before, during, and after emergencies.

The AGM was attended by representatives from volunteer fire brigades across the Upper North Island, providing a valuable opportunity to connect with firefighters, brigade leaders, and emergency service personnel from a wide range of communities. Events like these are an important reminder of the strength of collaboration and the shared commitment we all have to serving and protecting our communities.

We were proud to share our journey, highlight the work of our volunteers, and discuss the importance of strong partnerships across the emergency management sector.

A huge thank you to the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades Association for the invitation and hospitality. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to engage with so many dedicated volunteers and emergency service personnel from across the region.

Last night was a special milestone for NZ-RT23 as we came together for our first-ever combined training night, our Mid-Year Awards Evening, and our first official event in our new base! ❤️

Over the past six months, our volunteers have continued to demonstrate incredible commitment, professionalism, and dedication to serving the communities of Auckland and beyond. Whether responding during severe weather events, supporting community activities, undertaking specialist training, or preparing for future emergencies, every member has played a part in what has been an outstanding first half of 2026.

The evening provided an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our team, recognise some of the exceptional individuals who consistently go above and beyond, and celebrate the collective efforts that make NZ-RT23 what it is today.

It was also fitting that this celebration marked the beginning of a new chapter for our team as we officially commence operations from our new base. Over recent weeks, a huge amount of work has gone into making this move possible, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, energy, equipment, and support.

A special thank you to our special guests from Auckland Emergency Management for coming along and helping to make the evening so special. Your ongoing encouragement and belief in our mission helps make everything we do possible.

Most importantly, thank you to our volunteers. Every training session attended, every deployment responded to, every community event supported, and every hour given is helping build a stronger, safer, and more resilient Auckland.

Here’s to the second half of 2026 and everything that lies ahead. ❤️💪

Last week we had the awesome opportunity to visit BestStart Waiuku and spend time with the tamariki and staff! ❤️

During the visit, we got to show off some of our response vehicles and emergency equipment, while also teaching the children about emergencies, preparedness, and the different ways we help communities during disasters and incidents across Tāmaki Makaurau. 🚨

The kids loved getting up close to the vehicles, asking questions, and learning more about what emergency responders do to keep people safe. Seeing their excitement and curiosity made the day incredibly rewarding for our team.

Community engagement and education are a huge part of building resilient communities, and we’re always grateful for opportunities like this to connect with young people and help inspire the next generation.

A big thank you to the amazing team at BestStart Waiuku for having us along! ❤️

It’s been a busy weekend for NZ-RT23! 💪🌊🚨

While part of the team was representing us at the Civil Defence Emergency Management Forum, another group of our volunteers were hard at work next door at Wero Whitewater Park completing the Rescue 3 New Zealand Swiftwater Responder Course.

A huge thank you to the team at Rescue 3 for delivering another outstanding weekend of training and helping grow the capability of emergency responders across Aotearoa.

As flooding and severe weather events continue to impact our communities, having more qualified Swiftwater Responders within our team means we are even better prepared to safely assist people during emergencies. Every new skill, qualification and training opportunity strengthens our operational capability and directly benefits the communities we serve.

Ka pai to everyone who gave up their weekend to continue learning, developing and serving others-we’re incredibly proud to see the team continuing to grow stronger every month. 💪❤️

Today we were proud to be part of Auckland Emergency Management’s Civil Defence Emergency Management Forum at the Due Drop Events Centre ❤️

Throughout the day, our team showcased who we are, what we do, and the capabilities we bring to emergencies across Tāmaki Makaurau. We also ran a breakout session giving attendees an inside look at the specialist gear and equipment we use to assist communities during emergencies and deployments.

It was fantastic to connect with so many people and exhibit alongside other amazing community organisations all working together to build safer and more resilient communities. 🚨
