This afternoon Fire and Emergency crews from the West Auckland area attended a large scrub fire in Whenupai. As the weather starts to heat up it is a good time to make sure that your property is prepared for the upcoming heat and wind 🔥 💨

🔴High winds are expected during spring, check the conditions before lighting a fire using the Can I Light a Fire? Tool at checkitsalright.nz.

🔴Remove dead and dry vegetation from around homes and buildings.

🔴Keep spring grass short around homes and structures before it dries out.

🔴Ensure accessways for emergency vehicles are at least 4m x 4m and that RAPID numbers are clearly visible.

🔴Check water supplies, such as tanks, pools and ponds, are accessible and operational if firefighters need to use them.

Lithium-ion batteries have been linked to around 11 fires at Auckland's recycling facility and 17 rubbish and recycling truck fires in the past year 🔥 📅

Today is International E-waste Day and a good time to remind everyone to correctly recycle their lithium-ion batteries 🔋

When batteries are crushed or damaged during collection and transport, they can ignite quickly, putting truck drivers, collection crews, firefighters, and the public at risk ⚠️

Whether it's an old mobile phone, laptop, chargers, power tools or rechargeable battery, the best place for them is with a specialist reuse or recycling service !📱 💻 ⚒️

Today is International Day of Older Persons ❤️

Our older whānau have spent a lifetime looking out for us, teaching us, and keeping us safe. Now it’s our turn to look out for them.

Unfortunately with more than 50% of avoidable house-fire deaths we attend involve people over 60, it’s worth checking in with the older people in your life. 🏠🔥

Do they have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area? Do they have a safe way to get out if there is a fire? It’s easy to get disoriented in low visibility. It’s important to always have more then one way out in the event of a fire 🔥

Don’t guess. Don’t assume. Check in, have the conversation and help keep our older whānau safe. ❤️

This daylight saving weekend check in on your smoke alarms. Are they feeling energised? Are they looking a little dusty? Are they close to their use by date?

This is your friendly reminder to check your smoke alarms and give them some love this Spring ❤️
