Food safety and export confidence start with trusted testing.

The MPI Recognised Laboratory Programme supports laboratories carrying out testing under New Zealand’s Animal Products Act. To become MPI-recognised, laboratories must first achieve accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 through IANZ, demonstrating technical competence, reliable methods, and accurate results.

This programme helps ensure testing for animal products meets both domestic and international requirements, supporting the integrity of New Zealand’s food and export systems. With recognised laboratories operating to high international standards, businesses, regulators, and trading partners can have confidence in the results.

Recently, we hosted representatives from the Chinese National Accreditation Service (CNAS) and the Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

During the visit, we shared information about our respective organisations and reviewed our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CNAS. The MOU supports the agreement between the New Zealand and Chinese governments related to the testing of electrical and electronic equipment and components, signed in Beijing in 2008.

Exchanges like this demonstrate how accreditation helps provide confidence that testing and assessment results can be trusted across markets, supporting international trade and contributing to safer outcomes for everyone.

Thank you to the representatives from CNAS and SAMR for taking the time to visit and for the valuable exchange of information.

Did you know IANZ has been supporting trust and confidence in New Zealand since 1972?

IANZ is the trading entity and accreditation service provider for the Accreditation Council, a statutory body originally established under the Testing Laboratory Registration Act. Back then, the Council was known as the Testing Laboratory Registration Council, and IANZ operated as TeLaRC New Zealand, becoming only the second broad-spectrum accreditation body in the world.

Today, the Accreditation Council continues to carry out its statutory role under the Standards and Accreditation Act 2015, helping ensure competence, consistency and confidence across accredited services in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It provides independent recognition that organisations are competent, reliable, and working to internationally recognised standards.

We welcome Steve as our new Accreditation Assessor.

After starting out with a building apprenticeship in the Manawatū, he went on to study law, but those practical skills still come in handy today. Recently, he’s been helping repair his dad’s house in Feilding before it goes on the market.

His time living in South Korea sparked a love for travel and backpacking, including several visits to Myanmar, one of the most fascinating and memorable places he’s explored.

Outside of work, he has a strong passion for the arts, especially painting. In fact, if he could choose any career, his dream job would be to be a painter.

We’re excited to have him on board and look forward to you getting to know him better!
