Clear and up-to-date criteria support consistent practice across asbestos surveying, inspection, sampling and testing.

IANZ has released the fifth edition of AS LAB C2.3 / AS IB C1.1 Supplementary Criteria for Accreditation – Asbestos: Surveying, Inspection, Sampling and Testing.

The updated publication includes changes to proficiency testing requirements for KTPs responsible for multiple sites, calibration and performance check procedures for specific equipment, an update to the reference method AS 5370:2024, and the inclusion of Ministry of Education scheme requirements.

This publication provides criteria for organisations undertaking asbestos surveying, inspection, sampling and testing activities within the relevant scopes of IANZ accreditation.

A strong quality management system depends on competent people making informed, consistent decisions. But even experienced teams can develop capability gaps that aren’t immediately obvious.

Recurring non-conformities, inconsistent performance and ineffective corrective actions can all be signs that something needs attention. Identifying the underlying issue is the first step towards addressing it effectively.

Here are three ways to identify potential capability gaps:

💡 Look at how problems are being solved
Don’t just check whether a task was completed. Consider how it was approached and whether the outcome was effective. If the same issue keeps returning, the root cause may not be properly understood or investigated.

💡 Check understanding, not just compliance
Following a procedure doesn’t always demonstrate competence. People should understand why each step matters, the risks involved and how to respond when something doesn’t go according to plan.

💡 Recognise when training isn’t the answer
Not every performance issue is a capability gap. If someone understands what is required but isn’t applying it consistently, the underlying issue may relate to processes, workload or other factors.

For accredited organisations, demonstrating and maintaining competence is an important part of meeting accreditation requirements. Identifying capability gaps early helps support consistent performance, effective quality systems, and confidence in the activities within your scope of accreditation.

Reliable structures, equipment and safety systems depend on sound design, competent inspection and trusted testing.

Mechanical testing laboratories assess a wide range of products and materials to verify their strength, performance, durability, and safety. This can include testing cement and concrete, geomechanical materials and soils, windows and doors, engineering equipment such as relief valves and lifting gear, safety equipment, and leather and textile products.

We recently delivered our Measurement Uncertainty for Laboratories course and had a fantastic group of participants join us!

Throughout the course, attendees explored the principles of measurement uncertainty, learned to identify and quantify sources of uncertainty, and gained practical tools to confidently apply uncertainty concepts in their laboratory activities.

Safe drinking water starts with confidence in the laboratories that test it.

The IANZ Drinking Water Testing Laboratory accreditation programme supports laboratories that analyse drinking water for compliance with New Zealand's Drinking Water Standards. Accredited laboratories demonstrate technical competence to ISO/IEC 17025 and meet the requirements set by the Water Services Authority, Taumata Arowai, helping ensure the water communities rely on is tested accurately and consistently.
