Today marks a disappointing milestone.

50 strikes. 50 hours.

That’s 50 hours where Fire and Emergency NZ has chosen to leave communities exposed rather than resolve this dispute.

Professional firefighters don’t take industrial action lightly. Every strike has been a last resort after years of raising concerns about frontline staffing, ageing appliances, failing equipment, and the resources needed to keep both firefighters and the public safe.

For 50 hours, FENZ has gambled that nothing serious would happen during these periods of severely reduced response.

Our members have remained committed to protecting New Zealanders throughout this dispute. We simply want a fire service that is properly resourced, properly staffed, and capable of delivering the service our communities deserve.

It’s time to stop gambling with public safety and start investing in the people who protect it.

50 strikes is 50 too many………..

43 STRIKES. 2 YEARS EXPIRED. | As our members walk out for this afternoon’s industrial action, we mark a milestone that should never have been reached. Today is officially day 731 without a current contract.

Right now, NZPFU members across the country are standing strong on the picket lines. We are taking action today because the safety of our frontline—and the safety of our communities—cannot wait any longer.

The tide is turning. The public is listening, the systemic failures are under intense scrutiny, and FENZ management is finally being forced to face accountability.

They claim they have a revised offer ready. Our message to management this afternoon is simple: stop the PR spin and front up to the bargaining table. Present it to the NZPFU.

To the Māngere Fire Station crew (pictured) and every member standing out on the street right now: thank you for your unwavering solidarity. Two years on, we are stronger than ever.

Today being April Fools Day, we tried to come up with something more absurd than the FENZ Board giving themselves 79% more pay while firefighters strike for better conditions….
We couldn't. Reality won. 🏆

Fire and Emergency NZ Counties Manukau - Fire and Emergency NZ New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union

FENZ board members are gettting a 79% pay rise today as firefighters continue to ask for better pay and working conditions.

Māngere here’s the reality.

Your firefighters and ComCen are ready

The system around them isn’t :

•🚒 Trucks breaking down or off the run!
•🚒 Māngere can be left without a frontline truck!

•📟 111 calls diverted across NZ under pressure
•📟 Comcen operating under staffing pressure

•⏱ Backup coming from stations further away
•🧯 Equipment aging and under strain

At the same time:
•💰 $29M spent on a payroll programme that was scrapped
•💰 Millions spent on consultants and restructure
•💰Significant spend on management layers
•💰Now cutting $60–70M and hundreds of roles

You deserve better! Right now, it’s not guaranteed.

Fire and Emergency NZ continue to gamble with the safety of our Māngere community.
Ageing appliances and unreliable equipment should never be the standard for emergency response.
