Today being April Fools Day, we tried to come up with something more absurd than the FENZ Board giving themselves 79% more pay while firefighters strike for better conditions….
We couldn't. Reality won. 🏆

Fire and Emergency NZ Counties Manukau - Fire and Emergency NZ New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union

FENZ board members are gettting a 79% pay rise today as firefighters continue to ask for better pay and working conditions.

Māngere here’s the reality.

Your firefighters and ComCen are ready

The system around them isn’t :

•🚒 Trucks breaking down or off the run!
•🚒 Māngere can be left without a frontline truck!

•📟 111 calls diverted across NZ under pressure
•📟 Comcen operating under staffing pressure

•⏱ Backup coming from stations further away
•🧯 Equipment aging and under strain

At the same time:
•💰 $29M spent on a payroll programme that was scrapped
•💰 Millions spent on consultants and restructure
•💰Significant spend on management layers
•💰Now cutting $60–70M and hundreds of roles

You deserve better! Right now, it’s not guaranteed.

Fire and Emergency NZ continue to gamble with the safety of our Māngere community.
Ageing appliances and unreliable equipment should never be the standard for emergency response.

20/11/2025

This is exactly why we’re being forced to walk off today. Imagine the stress on our crews knowing there’s a confirmed house fire less than a kilometre away, and the truck won’t even release its brake. Critical minutes lost. A family watching their home burn while the closest station is effectively stranded because the gear is failing… again.

No firefighter should be put in that position. No family should be left waiting because FENZ can’t provide reliable, safe appliances.

Today from 12–1 we draw a line in the sand. We stand up for ourselves, for our community, and for the safety we’re sworn to protect. It’s time for FENZ to get their act together Fire and Emergency NZ Counties Manukau - Fire and Emergency NZ

After NZPFU put a fair offer on the table, FENZ refused to move an inch. No negotiation. No compromise. Just ego and power games.

This Friday at 12 noon, firefighters strike for one hour; because FENZ clearly doesn’t care who gets hurt as long as they “win”.

Fire and Emergency NZ arrogance is endangering lives.

We’re stoked to see our very own firefighter Carmen featured in the Wāhine Toa Firefighter Calendar 2026, celebrating the strength and mana of wāhine in the fire service across Aotearoa.

🔥 Who you got — Samoa 🇼🇸 or Tonga 🇹🇴? 🔥
It’s going to be an epic weekend!

If you’re joining the parades, remember — when you see flashing lights or hear sirens:

➡️ Pull over to the left and stop as soon as it’s safe.
➡️ Stay stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed.
➡️ Keep intersections clear so crews can get through.
➡️ Follow directions from emergency services or police officers.

Let’s celebrate safely, show respect, and keep the roads clear for our emergency crews.

⚠️ PUBLIC NOTICE – MĀNGERE ⚠️

According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s own official data, there is statistically a one-in-four chance that Māngere Fire Station will receive an emergency call between 12 pm and 1 pm this Friday, 17 October — exactly when firefighters will be on strike.

That means there is a very real likelihood that someone in our community could need urgent help… and there may be no immediate response available.

Let’s be clear — we didn’t choose this.
Firefighters have done everything possible to reach a fair settlement and to avoid putting the public at risk. We’ve shown up to negotiate. We’ve offered solutions. We’ve compromised.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand didn’t.
They failed to front up. They failed to fix the issues. And now, they’ve left Māngere and communities across New Zealand exposed.

We’re proud of the work we do, and we’ll always stand with our community. But right now, the organisation responsible for protecting you has walked away from its duty.

FENZ has left you exposed — and that’s on them. 🔥Fire and Emergency NZ Counties Manukau - Fire and Emergency NZ New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union

Uniform drama? Yeah nah — Māngere, we’re still out here keeping you safe.
Smoke alarms, Firewise, all that good stuff — shirts don’t save lives, we do.
We got you fam ….

| FENZ management have issued instructions that firefighters wearing NZPFU t-shirts instead of FENZ t-shirts are not to undertake usual fire safety duties including installing smoke alarms and school visits.

This is a shockingly petty call by FENZ management to try and pressure firefighters at the expense of necessary fire safety programmes that particularly benefit children and the elderly.

As part of usual duties professional career firefighters:

🔴 undertake home fire safety visits which include installing smoke alarms and discuss fire safety including escape plans,
🔴 provide FireWise programmes in schools teaching kids to get down, get low and get out (formally the stop, drop and roll education),
🔴 welcomed pre-schoolers and community groups like scouts and guides onto stations teaching them to be fire wise,
🔴 attend community events to hand out information and sometimes staff stalls to provide a focus on fire safety.

NZPFU have been undertaking lawful industrial action since 11 August 2025 which includes wearing union-provided t-shirts. Since August 11 they have continued to provide hundreds of home fire safety visits and FireWise programmes without issue or incident. The only difference is they are wearing a NZPFU t-shirt rather than a FENZ t-shirt as all other uniform remains the same.

FENZ is trying to coerce firefighters to take off their union t-shirts in order to do the fire safety visits and education – otherwise managers are instructed to stop them going.

Members are advised that the wearing of the union t-shirts is lawful industrial action and they cannot be punished or disadvantaged for doing so.

We ask FENZ to stop this petty retaliatory behaviour and to remove the instruction.

Fire safety is more important – and putting firefighters to the test like this is only harmful to their moral and wellbeing.
