Hi all,

I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me with my campaign. From covering costs, to printing my signs and flyers, to sign waving, to coming to my meet the candidates and posting online THANK YOU. A huge congratulations to our new local board member Lorenzo, thank you for encouraging me as a young person in this space. I appreciated that and this is still new learning for me but am proud that I put myself forward and went for it. It's not that end but I fully support and back our new local board members. He will do awesome for our community.

I will continue to do the mahi I am already doing in our community being based at the Otara youth hub and look forward to continuing my service to my community and peers through this avenue.

Love you all and thank you for your amazing support!

Meet the Candidates Apology

Hi Otara!

We have two meet the candidates events but unfortunately I won't be able to make this week as I'm away helping Tangaroa college with their student camp as a support worker/mentor.

I will definitely be at the next though but wanted to just send my apologies for not being able to make this week due to being away.

Thank you to my youth peers for helping to get some of my corflutes up 😍😍😍Campaigns on!

Dear residents of Otara,

I am Nevaeh Tawhi-Marsters, an 18-year-old candidate born and raised in Otara where I still reside, 2022 Dept Head Girl from TC running for the Otara-Papatoetoe local board. I am writing to share with you why it is important to elect a youth representative to the local board and why I believe I am the right choice.

Our community is rich with youthful energy, talent, and innovative ideas. By electing a youth representative to the local board, we can ensure that the voices and perspectives of young people are heard, valued, and incorporated into the decision-making processes that shape our community's future.

As a young candidate, I understand the unique challenges that our generation faces. I am passionate about addressing these issues head-on and working towards practical solutions that benefit all residents, regardless of age. I am committed to creating opportunities for youth in areas such as education, employment, and recreation.

Having grown up in Otara where I spent all my school years and where I service in the community daily, I have experienced firsthand the potential and resilience of our community. I am dedicated to empowering young people who are my peers and fostering an environment that allows them us all to thrive. I will advocate for initiatives that provide equal access to quality education, mentorship programs, and skills training, ensuring that our youth are well-prepared for a successful future.

Furthermore, I recognize the importance of safe and inclusive community spaces where young people can express themselves, engage in positive activities, and build strong social connections. I will work tirelessly to enhance the availability and quality of these spaces, collaborating with local organizations and authorities to create environments that foster growth, well-being, and a sense of belonging for all.

By voting for a youth representative like me, you are sending a powerful message: our community believes in the potential of young people and is committed to their inclusion and empowerment. Together, we can shape an Otara that thrives, embraces diversity, and provides opportunities for every individual to succeed.

I humbly ask for your vote in the current local board by-elections. Voting is open now and closes at the end of this month where the new board member elected straight after. Together, let us build a brighter future for all residents, with the energy, vision, and perspective that only a youth representative can bring.

Hi Otara!

Voting will open 6 June! So start to expect your voting papers in the mail. Just a heads up in advance 😄 expect some of my peers to be knocking on your doors over the next two weeks. It'll be weird but they will all be coming to remind you to do the following:

- Check your mail box
- Open your voting paper and vote
- Hand over your sealed voting forms to our team and they will put it straight into the voting boxes to make your life easier if you opt to do that

As I've said before, I'm keen and ready to give this a go and Ōtara choses to for the first time ever to make history and back a young person to be on our Ōtara -Papatoetoe local board, I promise you, I will give it my all!

Let's make history together next month Ōtara!

Kinda good news/feedback. It looks like the mayor & deputy mayor have listened to the community & listened to the feedback from many of us who’ve been advocating strongly to save these significant regional services & programmes from being cut.

I'm sure there's much more discuss for them to have but I hope that the things we were against getting cut end up being saved in the mayors final proposal. It was really bitter sweet to have helped when the consultation was open to get as many of our community to give their feedback as much as possible. In our community just over 1000 people gave their feedback and thoughts. I'm really proud of my team and peers from The Ōtara Youth Drop in Hub and the street leaders from My Street NZ Neighbours who are all under The Community Builders NZ Trust because out of that 1000 feedback we managed to get just under 500 of those feedback forms completed and in by getting out in our community, letting youth and the community know about the budget cut, explaining it in easier terms and then supporting them to complete their feedback. It was awesome to see the large majority stand against to cuts with arts, local programs, reduction in our local services like our libraries and more. There's still heaps of work to be done and let's hope that those standing for our community on council do their best to speak for us.

Consultation was so clear on stopping the cuts. Unfortunately not as clear how we should fund stopping the cuts and filling the gap. So difficult decisions for all of us to make.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown intends to propose changes to the draft annual budget 2023/24 when he tables the final budget proposal at the Governing Body in early June.
