Boxes and boxes of unused uniforms sitting at Kilbirnie Fire Station for years, labelled "non-compliant—do not use."

$61 million squandered on failed IT projects. Bloated, overpaid management taking a huge slice of the budget.

BREAKING: ANOTHER BREAKDOWN ON THE FRONTLINE. 🚨🚒

While a major blaze sent black smoke over West Auckland this morning, the "failing fleet" crisis hit the fire ground again.

This is Te Atatu’s 17m ladder truck (pictured), broken down at the scene of the Glendene warehouse fire. This truck is plagued with ongoing issues, and today it failed when it was needed most.

The reality is even worse:
🔴 One of Auckland’s only two high-reach ladder trucks (Parnell) is also broken.
🔴 Mechanics are so overwhelmed fixing FENZ’s ageing fleet that firefighters had to wait on the fire ground for a service provider to arrive just to get this truck working.

On Workers Memorial Day, we are reminded that FENZ’s failure to maintain a reliable fleet doesn't just risk property—it risks the lives of our firefighters and our community.

The NZPFU is calling for an independent inquiry into FENZ to examine why FENZ has failed to manage funding to ensure that it has the capacity and capability for reliable emergency response to the New Zealand public, now and in the future.

There needs to be independent scrutiny of FENZ’s management of its funding to ascertain whether it has been appropriately focused on the necessary critical areas of resourcing to provide emergency response, protect the public and meet its obligations under the Fire and Emergency Act 2017.

We believe there have been serious failures in the management and governance of FENZ with a lack of accountability for failed projects that have wasted tens of millions of dollars.

We believe that there is a serious lack of transparency in decisions and the actual state of affairs. This was reflected in FENZ providing a myriad of responses to questions of Members of Parliament in the House and through a select committee. FENZ has provided inaccurate or misleading information and in doing so has demonstrated the need for a full, independent inquiry.

The NZPFU has released a petition. We respectfully ask the public to support our call for a public independent inquiry.

The petition can be accessed here: www.direemergency.nz/help

Due to the moving extreme weather events warranting civil emergencies and deployments of additional resources including USAR and water rescue teams, and clean ups in the aftermath, the NZPFU has cancelled todays strike.

NZPFU members were due to strike for one hour from 12 noon today.

In some areas our members have been responding to multiple emergency situations for the past 12 hours. Others are now in the clean up phase and the weather event is moving south.

NZPFU has notified of two one hour strikes next week – our members will be striking from 12 noon on Monday 30th March and Wednesday 1 April 2026.
