Here’s a look back at what our community made possible in September 🩵

Every meal served at Haeata, every food parcel shared, every appointment at Calder Health Centre and every step towards a home happened because of people like you. Whether you donated, volunteered, fundraiser or shared a post, you’re part of this community’s and together it keeps growing.

Yesterday was Mission Giving Day with our partner New World, and together we raised $268,000 for whānau across our city.

We are so grateful to everyone who gave, shared, or simply spread the word. This community continues to show up, again and again, and it means everything.

Thank you, Tāmaki Makaurau. 🩵

Today is Matched Giving Day. Thanks to New World, every donation made before 11.59pm tonight will be doubled until the $100,000 matching pool runs out.

At Haeata, a meal is never just a meal. Sharing kai can be the start of something much bigger, a moment of care, connection, a place of refuge when there was nowhere else to go. Here's what it has meant to some of the people who've sat at our tables.

"I came here for a free meal, and ended up getting help with addiction and accommodation." - Mel

"After about 5 months of coming up here to Haeata, I got my head back into a positive space with the help of the Mission staff." - Rob

"I've been out there homeless and I needed somewhere to eat. And just feel safe, even for a short period of time." - Lisa

What started as a contribution of baked goods has become an ongoing part of life at Haeata. 🩵

The AUT Cooking School has been supporting Haeata by sharing the delicious things their students make, from desserts and pastries to freshly baked bread, with whānau who access our services.

At the end of each semester, they also pass on unused ingredients and fresh produce, including fruit and vegetables, milk, cream and eggs.

Last week, members of the AUT team visited HomeGround and Haeata to learn more about the services we provide and see the mahi their support contributes to.

We’re grateful for the many ways our community supports Haeata, and for the AUT Cooking School being part of it. 🙌🏽

There were also 57 appointments with our dental team.

These numbers represent people accessing food, healthcare and housing support, often navigating more than one challenge at once.

And thank you to our kaimahi, volunteers, donors, partners and wider community. Your support helps make this mahi possible every day. 🙌🏽

Meet Joe

Joe is a Community Connector in our Food Security team, one of the first friendly voices for whānau reaching out for support.

That support starts with the first phone call, from people who have nowhere else to turn and need food today. Joe always takes the time to listen and understand each person's situation.

"When we pick up the phone, we'll ask a few questions so we can get them the right food parcel and to see how we can best support them."

That care continues face-to-face when whānau come in to collect their kai – a parcel with enough nutritious food to last four days. But for Joe, the welcome matters just as much as the food.

"When they come in for their food parcel, I have a conversation with them, see where they're at. So they feel like there's someone there for them. That's when they start to trust and tell me what they're going through."

"There's always an underlying reason why someone's needing food parcels."

As trust grows, he can connect people with other Mission services and food security programmes. He can also provide people with support to get back into employment. So when a Community Connector hears that someone is looking for work, they let Joe know and he makes a point of being there to meet them in person.

"I make sure I'm present when they come, not just on the phone. I build that relationship, take time to connect. And from there, we see where they want to go."

The support is practical: preparing for interviews, building CVs, finding volunteer opportunities and job vacancies. And he works with people for as long as it takes.

"One guy was coming in weekly for food. I'd sit down with him, talk about what he wanted to do and show him what vacancies there were. He got a job in December and he's never been back! He just needed someone to journey with him. Every now and then he'll text me an update."

Another woman was struggling to get any interviews until Joe helped her rework her CV. Now she's being shortlisted.

"Seeing her come in with a massive smile and say, 'I'm so happy! I got an interview!' Those are the things that make my day.”

For Joe, it always comes back to people.

"Seeing where someone’s journey starts and where it's going. I want to see them get there. That's my why – the reason I get up in the morning”
