Our Living Smokefree Service and van also joined in Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Day.

Hannah Rewiri and Joshua Alderton are Smokefree promoters who work out and about in the community.

Hannah says they had a great day of connection and koorero with the Manurewa community, sharing their mahi and supporting people to take the first step in becoming smokefree.

“These Te Rito Ora Whaanau Hauora Days give us the opportunity to hear from our community about how our service can best support them, while also giving whaanau the chance to paatai and learn more about our smokefree support.

If you are thinking about stopping smoking, call 0800 569 568 or TXT 'NOW' to 590

Auckland Regional Dental Service Outreach Team were all smiles at the Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Day, pulling up with their bright, colourful dental bus.

The service provides free general dental care from birth until Year 8 for eligible children in the Auckland Region.

The Outreach team get out and about in the community to do free dental checks.

Moka Toimata-Hadjmahfoud says she really enjoys attending these days and talking with people in the community about their dental health.

“I love my job with the Outreach team and the engagement with our community. Our Outreach team has such a special and unique holding space for our whaanau,” says Moka, pictured here with Health NZ Chief Executive Dr Dale Bramley, and Dr Richard Sullivan, Health NZ Executive National Director – Clinical.

The Health and Disability Advocacy Service also attended the Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Day.

Pranesh Davendran, Advocate, tells us that networking events like these allow the organisation’s advocates to meet people out in the community.

“Our service is aware of gaps in understanding of what the ‘Code of Rights’ is, so it is a good opportunity to meet people, and I can share information and talk with them about what it means for them.

“We also tell them about our service and what we do which is to provide free support with information, empowerment and education for health or disability complaints. Anyone can give us a call and chat,” says Pranesh.

We were happy to see Joe and Jessie from Southpoint Family Doctors – a regular at Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Days.

Joe Glassie–Rasmussen tells us they offer a free service dedicated to supporting pregnant women of Pacific and Maaori descent, and children from 0-5 years.

“It is important to get out in the community and talk to our mothers and mothers–to-be about their care while pregnant, after the birth and also the health of their babies. We can answer their questions and tell them about our service.

“Our Kahu Taurima team work closely with Counties Manukau Community Midwives (CMMC) providing holistic, social and medical support including vaccinations, wellbeing, screening and social advocacy.

“Through this strong collaboration with Health NZ and community connection at these events like these, we can help improve long-term outcomes for whaanau and tamariki,” says Joe.

Health NZ Chief Executive Dr Dale Bramley attended Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Day held at St Anne’s Church in Manurewa.

“It was great to be back in my old neighbourhood. I grew up in Manurewa, went to school there - James Cook High - and attended this church, St Anne’s, back in the 1980s and 1990s.

“I was even part of the procession to the new church when it moved from its former location on Weymouth Road. A number of my aunts and uncles were foundation members of the school when it opened in the 1950s,” said Dale.

“It’s inspiring to see our services come together to make people aware of the help that’s available to them.

“It is important that we reach out into the community to support people to lead healthier lives, whether that’s helping them to quit smoking or have a screening test that could pick something up before it becomes a major issue for them and their family.”

Community spirit radiated from the St Anne’s Church Hall in Manurewa, as Te Rito Ora’s Whaanau Hauora Day event took place on Friday 22 May.

The community event had over 150 people coming through the doors to explore and learn more about their health and wellbeing.

A variety of services from Health NZ Counties Manukau, including Living Smokefree, Bowel Screening, Community Midwives and the Auckland Regional Dental Services Outreach team, were on site talking with people and providing health information and education.

Stalls from other community services and organisations like Southpoint Family Doctors, Hone Hato St John, NZ Blood, Health and Disability Advocacy Services, Age Concern, Manukau Business Association and more, also offered a range of health education and information to the public.

A big thank you to everyone involved and also to St Anne’s Church for donating your space to host this great community event.
