Message from Watercare re more roadworks on Atkinson Rd starting in June for 3 months...

Kia ora,

We’re getting in touch with an update on the Nihotupu 1 watermain project and what to expect as we move into the final stage of this work.

Project background

The original Nihotupu 1 watermain was laid around 1905 using predominantly cast‑iron pipe. It pumps water from the Titirangi Reservoirs to the Nihotupu Reservoir and supplies around 18,000 customers in Laingholm and Titirangi. Due to its age and condition, the watermain needed to be replaced.

Boost pump station – Atkinson Road

The final stage of this project will see a new boost pump station at 86A Atkinson Road to ensure water pressure and flow continue to meet expected service levels. Construction of the boost pump station is expected to start in June 2026 and take approximately three months.

We understand there has been a lot of disruption to the community in and around Atkinson Road already and our aim is to keep further inconvenience to a minimum.

Works in Glen Eden

While working in the wider area, we identified additional sections of the local water network that needed upgrading on Withers Road, Kashmir Road and Nandana Drive. These works are progressing as planned, with completion expected by mid‑June, weather permitting. Completing these upgrades now avoids the need to return at a later date.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation of the community as we complete this important work.

An image of the location and footprint of the Atkinson Road Pump Station is below.

Our commitment to the community

We understand that infrastructure works like this can be disruptive, particularly when they take place over a long period. We are committed to being a good neighbour while we work in your area and will continue to look for ways to reduce impacts wherever possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we complete these important upgrades to Auckland’s water network.

Message from Watercare:
As part of the Western Water Supply Programme, we are planning to carry out a low‑impact LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey over parts of the Waitākere Ranges.

LiDAR uses laser light from an aircraft to accurately map the shape of the land, including underlying topography and geological formations, even through vegetation. This provides a much higher level of detail than the historical data we have relied on previously and will help us better understand ground conditions, assess future risks to assets and people, and plan responsibly for the long term.

The survey will be undertaken as part of a formal flight plan, with the aircraft taking off from Auckland Airport and flying at a high altitude (around 3,000 feet / 900 metres). We currently expect this survey to take place in the next fortnight or so. The Waitākere Dam and Upper Nihotupu areas will be flown over for approximately 30 minutes each, with timing dependent on suitable weather and aviation requirements, rather than a fixed date.

Importantly, this work is much less intrusive than helicopter surveys. There is no landing, no ground access, and no physical disturbance to land, vegetation, or waterways. The activity will be brief, intermittent, and designed to minimise impact on the environment and surrounding communities.

The Waitākere Ranges Heritage Area is a nationally significant taonga, but it’s at risk.

The Government’s proposed replacement of the Resource Management Act could quietly strip away protections by failing to properly reference the laws that safeguard this place.

Aucklanders have spoken up before – 81% supported protecting the Waitākere Ranges – but now we need to speak up again.

If we don’t act before 25 April, generations could lose the protections that keep the Waitākere Ranges healthy.

The Waitakere Ranges are precious.  They provide Auckland with fresh air and clean water.  They provide us with serenity and artistic inspiration.  They have been described as “the lungs of Tamaki Makaurau” and Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa is a very effective sequesterer of carbon.  T...

Plenty of time to get prepared for Cyclone Vaianu. Make sure you clear gutters & drains, tie down or put away loose items & have sufficient water, food & medications for you and your pets. Charge batteries, power banks, torches, phones etc and assume you will lose power &/or water. Have a battery radio or car radio available for updates. Prepare a grab bag with warm/waterproof clothing, food for you & pets, water, torch, copies or originals of important documents (passports etc). Check on your neighbours and stay alert. Be prepared to move if you feel unsafe, do not wait for official warnings. Never drive through floodwaters. Stay safe everyone.

Cyclone Vaianu Update #2

9 April 2026, 10.45am

Mōrena, we have received an update from MetService who have now included a Heavy Rain Watch into the forecast for this coming weekend.

Situation

Cyclone Vaianu is expected to move southwards across the North Island on Sunday, 12 April. The combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation makes this a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event. The locations of the most severe impacts associated with Cyclone Vaianu, such as power outages, falling trees, flooding, slips, road closures and isolated communities are highly dependent on the cyclone's track.

Heavy Rain Watch

Area: Auckland and Great Barrier Island
Period: 12hrs from 2:00am Sun to 2:00pm Sun
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria.
Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

Strong Wind Watch

Area: Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island
Period: 21hrs from 9:00pm Sat to 6:00pm Sun
Forecast: Easterly quarter winds turning westerly. Winds are likely to reach severe gale in exposed places and may be damaging, especially during Sunday morning and afternoon.
High chance of upgrading to a Warning.

How you can prepare now

•Keep up-to-date with the weather by downloading the MetService app from the App Store or Google Play, or visit www.metservice.com
•Start preparing your property – check your drains and gutters to ensure they aren’t blocked and clear tree branches, leaves and debris. These can cause flooding issues during heavy rain. Put away or tie down any loose outdoor furniture and trampolines in case of high winds.
•Get ready in case of power outages. Check you’ve got a torch and batteries, keep your phone and power banks charged, and have a battery-operated radio (or your car radio as an alternative).
•Plan travel accordingly. Make sure you drive to the conditions and never drive through floodwaters or over slips.
•The forecast is for predicting large swells and high energy waves. The conditions are not looking ideal for boating or shore fishing.

Feel free to share this message with whānau and friends to help them get prepared too – we’ve got this Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland!

Please make a submission on the two Bills that are intended to replace the RMA this week. Deadline is 4.30pm on Friday. These Bills will devastate and destroy the rules protecting the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area & there will be nothing you can do or say to stop your neighbours doing whatever they like on their land. It really is unbelievable. We have used the Environmental Defence Society (NZ) submission template to create our own and added a huge section about the Heritage Area thanks to Greg Presland. Please use it to copy & paste and amend or just use it however you like to create your own submission. You can download it here: http://subliminal.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/DRAFTv2-Sub_RMA-Replacement-Bills_TRRA_feb26.docx

Great to see that the Waitākere Ranges Local Board has undertaken another chicken relocation operation in the village. We have been lobbying for years for this work to continue. Dumping of roosters will continue to be a problem unfortunately, so getting rid of them quickly is key to keeping the numbers down and preventing breeding. They might look cute but they attract rats, spread kauri dieback, leave poo everywhere and are noisy and disruptive. We know of residents who have moved out of the village due to the noise. So please do not feed them and if you see new chickens arriving please notify the Local Board. Thanks
