Reminder: Got a local event in mind? Expressions of Interest are open for the Howick Local Board Event Partnership Fund 👍

The Howick Local Board’s $135,000 Event Partnership Fund supports annual events across Howick, Pakūranga, Botany and Flat Bush, including the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show, Pakuranga Rotary Club’s Community Carnival and River Festival, and the Howick Santa Parade.

Community organisations and event organisers can apply for funding for annual events taking place in the local board area between October 2027 and June 2028. The fund supports both established and emerging events that bring people together and contribute to vibrant, connected communities.

Successful applicants may be considered for a funding partnership of up to three years, helping provide greater certainty for event planning. Funding is allocated and paid annually, subject to accountability and reporting requirements.

📣 Join us tomorrow, Thursday 8 October, at 10am for our local board workshop - everyone is welcome. You can join us in person or online. For details on what will be on the agenda, see Deputy Chair Kai Zeng - Howick Local Board’s post below.

Workshops are informal sessions used to canvass issues, prepare local board members for upcoming decisions and to enable discussion between elected members and staff. No decisions are made at the workshops - they're made at our monthly business meeting. Next business meeting date is Thursday 28 October.

🛝 Black Shed Road Reserve in Flat Bush is set to become a neighbourhood park - and we want local input before the plans are finalised.

A new park is proposed and includes play for different ages, pathways, landscaping, seating and a small area for informal recreation.

It’s not about trying to fit everything in. It’s about getting the most out of the space and focusing on what local families will actually use.

What should be prioritised? What would make a difference for your family? What have we missed?

Auckland Transport’s system is changing — but most people won’t notice much day to day https://tinyurl.com/mry76pux

From 1 October 2026, Auckland Council is taking responsibility for local roads, footpaths, parking, bus lanes, street lighting and speed limits.

What stays the same?
🚌 Buses, trains and ferries will continue to be operated by Auckland Transport.
🚗 Parking charges and payment methods aren’t changing.
🛣️ State highways and motorways remain with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

There are a couple of changes to be aware of.
AT Park is becoming AC Parking, and Auckland Council will now handle reports about things like potholes, damaged footpaths and broken streetlights through its Report It service.

Council will also take the lead on consulting with communities about local transport changes, with local boards having a greater role in neighbourhood-level decisions.

The big change is happening behind the scenes: more transport decisions are moving closer to Auckland Council and local communities, with the aim of better connecting transport with decisions about housing, infrastructure and how Auckland grows.

A lovely reminder that there’s still time to experience Celebrating Cultures at Botany Town Centre 🌏

FIND IT: at the Conservatory, between H&M and Hallensteins and The stage, Town centre Drive. There will also be performances and activities happening around the centre.

For the past week, families have been able to enjoy free cultural performances, activities and experiences as part of the school holiday programme.

It’s a wonderful celebration of the different cultures and communities that make East Auckland what it is.

This is an evolution of the Celebrating Cultures event and it’s been fantastic to see the programme grow - with more days, more opportunities for performers and a great partnership with Botany Town Centre.

Each year, South & East Auckland kindergarten and primary school tamariki turn sustainable materials and repurposed waste into art - learning about our environment while getting creative. This year's theme is Ka Tipu Tahi Taatou - Together We Grow 🌱

Great to be a part of this and our local board were delighted to a part of this day with Chair Bruce Kendall, deputy Chair Kai Zeng - Howick Local Board, member Krish Naidu and members of other local boards in attendance at the Beautification Trust Eye on Nature Creative Arts Prizegiving.
