Magnolias are one of the oldest flowering plants, dating back over 95 million years, even before bees existed! They were originally pollinated by beetles. Magnolia flowers evolved to withstand beetles climbing inside their flowers so they are tough to protect the important parts of the flower for pollination.

This Sunday, we are helping Aucklanders dig into a greener future through Auckland Council’s Go Native campaign, a region-wide initiative encouraging people to plant native seedlings in their backyards, gardens and even balcony pots.

Pop along on Sunday 7 June, to get yourself a free native seedling and learn about what it takes to care for it so it becomes a flourishing part of your garden or balcony.

Meet Narcissus ‘Erlicheer’ – a real flowering star. This beautiful daffodil produces stems of highly fragrant, creamy white double flowers with a soft yellow centre, with up to 10 blooms on each stem.

Perfect for planting in containers, garden beds, borders or even rockeries, and it shines as a cut flower too. Pick the flowers in bud and they’ll scent and brighten your home for over a week.

Try layering bulbs in a large pot with other spring-flowering bulbs to create a stunning, colourful display for your patio, deck or balcony.

Check out this striking red new growth. Say hello to Podocarpus milanjianus - a lovely conifer native to the tropical mountains of Africa. This tree can grow up to 35m with a straight trunk or be short and shrubby when it grows in exposed locations.

Fun fact - our plants were donated by JB Hair after he completed his research into chromosome numbers of exotic trees and many plants of the NZ flora.

Find this and other beautiful conifers in Podocarp Valley.

Looking for a lush, tropical feel? Sugar cane palm (Dypsis baronii) is a beautiful clumping palm that brings instant jungle vibes to the garden. With its elegant, arching fronds and tidy, compact form, it’s perfect for small gardens, courtyards, or large pots. It’s relatively low maintenance and works wonderfully as a feature plant or in mass plantings for a layered, tropical look.
