Feeding the world's burgeoning population is shaping up to be one of the greatest challenges facing mankind. Coupled with this is increasing scientific evidence that our traditional food production methods are causing havoc on our environment and ecosystems. It has to be possible to produce healthy nutritious food for all of the world's population - without destroying our environment. Berrysmith F

oundation's aim is to lead the world in the development of sustainable systems that make growing healthy, nutritious food available for virtually everyone - regardless of land availability, climate, soil conditions, location, natural resources or large capital investment. We believe that New Zealand has the potential to become a global pioneer in the development of such systems, and in doing so, further enhance our international reputation as the premier food producer globally.

🌱 Breadfruit and the future of food

Rotary’s article looks at breadfruit as a climate-resilient food crop with serious potential. It can withstand heat, drought and rainy conditions, while producing nutrient-dense food for decades.
A single breadfruit tree can produce hundreds of fruits a year, and the fruit can be roasted, steamed, fried, fermented, dried or milled into flour.

This is the kind of food systems thinking that matters: resilient crops, long-term production, less pressure on resources, and practical food security for communities 🌍 https://bit.ly/4x7apOf

In the quest for food sources that can withstand a rapidly changing climate, there’s one conspicuously curious crop: the breadfruit, a spiky green orb native to the Malay Archipelago that’s surprisingly versatile and packed with nutrition.

🐟 Small fish, big role in sustainable food systems 🌍

The FAO is highlighting the importance of aquatic foods and small-scale fisheries in supporting food security, nutrition and sustainable livelihoods around the world.

As conversations around the future of food continue to grow, it’s becoming increasingly clear that resilient food systems will need to include smarter, lower-impact ways of producing protein and nourishing communities. Sustainable food production isn’t one single solution — it’s about understanding the balance between ecosystems, resources and long-term human health 🌱 https://bit.ly/42RXTUZ

🥦 Farmers in the Netherlands are growing more food using less resources. https://bit.ly/3RMeqap

This pioneering Dutch farm has found clever ways to generate higher yields using less space and fewer inputs. They’re growing food that’s more sustainable and economical too. Despite being a small, densely populated country, the Netherlands is one of the world’s biggest vegetable exporters. As...

Good food starts long before it reaches the plate 🍎🌱

The way food is grown, handled and valued has a direct impact on the health of our people and our planet. That’s why the BerrySmith Foundation continues to support conversations and projects around more sustainable food systems — ones built on smarter resource use, healthier ecosystems, and long-term thinking.

🍽️ Using food waste for good 🌱

Food waste doesn’t have to be the end of the line. From turning scraps into new ingredients to finding better ways to reuse what would otherwise be thrown out, there’s growing momentum around making food systems more efficient.

It’s a shift in thinking — not just producing more, but making better use of what’s already there. 👉 https://bbc.in/4tAiSXQ

As global food production is on the rise, food waste is soaring. About 40% of all food goes uneaten, but 10% of the world's population are hungry. This edible waste also contributes to climate change, increasing the risk of food insecurity.

🍽️ Food waste isn’t just waste 🌱

Across the world, large amounts of food are still being lost or thrown away — even as demand for food continues to grow. It’s a clear gap between how much we produce and how efficiently we use it.
Food systems aren’t only about growing more. They’re about using what’s already there, reducing loss, and thinking carefully about how food moves from production to plate.

Grounded in real work, not just ideas. 🌿

The BerrySmith Foundation backs practical, long-term projects that rethink how food is produced — from restoring land to exploring more sustainable ways to grow and use resources.
It’s about doing the work, learning from it, and sharing what actually holds up. 🌍

🌱 A healthier world doesn’t happen by accident
The BerrySmith Foundation was created from a genuine commitment to doing things differently — to understanding how food is produced, where it comes from, and what it costs the environment long term.

That’s meant backing real projects, not just ideas. Reforesting land in Northland, trialling closed-loop aquaponics systems, supporting organic training in Samoa, and exploring ways to produce food and nutrients more sustainably. It’s about asking better questions around food — how we grow it, how we use resources, and how we can do it in a way that actually holds up for the future.

Because the way we produce food now directly shapes the kind of world we leave behind. 🌍
